Bir kenti kent yapan kimler ve neler? 🌿

Ağaçlar, hayvanlar, su, toprak, yer şekilleri, teknolojiler ve altyapılar kentin yalnızca arka planı mı; yoksa onun hikâyesini bizimle birlikte yazan aktörler mi?

“Maddemetin Olarak Kent Ekolojileri: İnsandan-İbaret-Olmayan Hikâyeler” buluşması ile kenti insan-merkezci bakışın ötesinden düşünmeye davet ediyoruz.

Başak Ağın, Tuçe Erel ve Ozan Atalan ile gerçekleşecek buluşmada; “maddemetin” kavramından kent ekolojilerine, insan olmayanların failliğinden birlikte oluş ve yanıt verebilirliğe, teori ile sanatın kesişiminden başka türlü birlikte yaşama ihtimallerine uzanan bir düşünme alanı açacağız.

Kentte yalnızca bizim hikâyelerimiz yok. Peki, insandan-ibaret-olmayan hikâyeleri nasıl duyabiliriz?

Sonic Leaks listens to the shape of water and the power that gives it form: the water moving through a system, and the politics of the container that decides where it can go. Wherever water is enclosed – the pipeline, the dam, the metered tap, the gated reservoir – the same conversion repeats: a public substance becomes a saleable container, abundance for those who can pay and stagnation for everyone else. Accelerated, that logic makes water infrastructure a military target, like with the Kakhovka dam in Ukraine, strikes on Gulf desalination plants in the current US–Israel attack on Iran, and Gaza, where data indicate nearly 90% of water and sanitation infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged in the ongoing genocide.

How do we listen to the systems that decide who gets to drink? Each container’s resonance, absorption, and diffusion carries the relations of power that placed it there, treating acoustic impedance as a political parameter. A leak is the first failure you can hear: the moment an enclosure stops holding, where pressure finds the crack and the sealed system gives itself away. To hear a leak is to hear power overreach its own containment. A leak is also an opening: a place where a closed system can be entered, and redirected.

Many thanks to all those who shared their voices with us, entrusting us with fragments of their stories, memories, knowledge, and ways of relating to water.

Today I had the joy of conducting my workshop “River Song” as part of “Confluence of European Water Bodies - Spree” 🌊🌊🌊🌊
Together we travelled through the memories held by rivers, and we sang.
It was deeply moving to feel so many voices flowing into one another.
So grateful to everyone who joined “River Song”!

Thank you Tuçe Erel @tuceerel ✨ for inviting me and for your brilliant curatorial work, as always✨

And I’m also grateful to my dear Ines Lechleitner @ineslechleitner for joining the workshop today too: her artistic work has long resonated with me. 2016 I had the beautiful experience of performing vocals for her multidisciplinary work “Das Rhein Rauschen”, a sensorial exploration of the Rhine River 🤍
