It’s a pleasure to feature Prof. Brian Hitselberger’s @brianhitsstudio personal artistic outlet Two Steps Press @twostepspress in NHGCA’s BG Projects in addition to work of his Purdue University students. While emphasizing that the “The Zine Scene: A Regional Sampler” will close May 30th with a gallery Open House from 3-5 p.m. CT, we wanted to take a chance to highlight the thoughtfully-made artist books Hitselberger contributes to the exhibit as well as gallery shop. As a great example of how the zine as a medium often straddles both DIY aesthetic and the small-batch professional publishing world, Hitselberger’s Two Steps Press work helps connect the importance of materials with carefully chosen cardstock, handstamping, and multi-color risograph printing. Prof. Brian Hitselberger has been a partner of the gallery on multiple occasions in recent years, appearing with work in the consignment shop as well as in multiple exhibits and gallery programs. His artwork will continue to be featured in the gallery consignment shop with a renewed array of works on sale as a result of this show (see images/videos 3-10 of his artworks for sale at the gallery courtesy the artist’s Two Steps Press website.) Two Steps Press is the independent publishing project of artist Brian Hitselberger: an artist, publisher, and Professor at Purdue University. It began as an extension of personal studio practice. Hitselberger incorporated artist book editions more intentionally into his practice with “Counterspell” in 2018 for a solo exhibition of the same name. Two Steps Press shifted again towards using the book form as an opportunity for collaboration and exchange with the publication of “Slender Intuition” in 2023. Within the last 3 years, Two Steps has begun to incorporate the risograph process. The focus of Two Steps Press remains on artist books, exhibition ephemera, and collaborations with other artists, with handmade editions generally in the range of 100-250 copies. Two Steps Press is currently based in The Weather Station, an artist-run project space and collaborative studio, in Lafayette, Indiana, USA. The New Harmony Gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT.

Although the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is closed today, Saturday, May 22nd, for the holiday weekend, enjoy this takeover post graciously produced by artist, curator, and Purdue University Professor Brian Hitselberger @brianhitsstudio about his handmade artist books (also for sale in the gallery shop) in “The Zine Scene: A Regional Sampler” closing next Saturday, May 30th, 2026. From Hitselberger: “Two Steps Press @twostepspress is my independent publishing project - I use it as an identity to organize my book and print projects. Based in The Weather Station @the.weather.station in Lafayette, Indiana, Two Steps Press focuses on artist books, exhibition ephemera, and collaborations with other artists, but I also publish my own work through the imprint.
Making a zine after traveling to a place is my way to reflect on it, see it through a new lens, and “revisit” it once I’ve returned home to my studio. For Soft Geometry, I loved the idea of using a Walgreens near my house as a way to generate the material for this piece, and using the format to see only two photos at a time. The contrasts between these images (for me) take me straight back to the weather of these places, and the ways that that weather would change rapidly - sometimes from one hour to the next.”
The New Harmony Gallery is open regular hours Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT.

Opening Saturday, April 18th from 3-5 p.m. with a free reception and refreshments provided, BG Projects at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art proudly presents “The Zine Scene: A Regional Sampler” through May 30th, 2026. Curated by Grant DiDomizio, participants include Maureen Langley @btownzineclub (organizer, Bloomington Zine Club,) Prof. Brian Hitselberger @brianhitsstudio of Purdue University (founder, Two Steps Press and Weather Station space,) Prof. David Wischer @wischer of University of Kentucky, and Dr. Gregory Blair @gregblairart of the University of Southern Indiana. This invitational exhibit features work from five entities: Bloomington (IN) Zine Club, Purdue University, Two Steps Press @twostepspress , University of Kentucky, and University of Southern Indiana. The exhibit delves into the increasingly popular art form of the “zine”: a form of publication that can include self-published, small circulation, and non-commercial artist books. Traditionally favored for accessibility and ease of reproduction in alternative spaces, the medium has experienced a newfound popularity across college campuses in recent years. The New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT.

The Weather Station and @twostepspress collaborated with Ashely Jude Jonas to produce Magic Maker, an artist book published to accompany Jonas’ solo exhibition Aerial Mo(u)rning, on view through June 28th.

Magic Maker brings together Jonas’ Instax phtorgaphs of her late father’s Key West Home, alongside documentation objects the artist collected from his house over the years, which became starting points for the work in this exhibition. Short texts and essays by curator @brianhitsstudio accompany these images in a series of risograph prints, each folded or bound to fit inside a “policy” envelope.

This is the first publication we have produced for an exhibition in our space, and we’re really proud of it. Interested in a copy? Come by the gallery to purchase in person, or send us a DM here. We’re happy to ship!

I recently re-designed my website, from top to bottom. It took most of this past year.

It now feels much more indicative of my work these days, which - since moving to Indiana 5 years ago - has branched off in a few different directions. Curatorial projects, writing, and book design now exist alongside one another, with each cross-pollinating each other and informing other projects and exhibitions.

There’s a fair amount of explanatory text happening, for a few reasons: for over a decade, I’ve been making public lectures about my practice in universities, galleries, libraries, museums and other spaces. Despite my introversion, this is a surprisingly comfortable space for me, as it feels like my speaking and the work’s documentation in combination with one another constitute something ideal for me. I’ve brought that tone to the site itself - I wanted my speaking voice to interact with my artist voice.

The second, larger reason is that I don’t want my personal practice to be quickly digested, to be just another bundle of jpegs on a screen. The reason that I work in my studio is so that I might think and exist more slowly - which for me, means more deeply. It’s no easy task, these days.

Have a look! As is so often the case with me, I love it on a phone, but I *really* love it on a larger screen. Link in bio ❤️🔗
