THE SUBSTRATE OF EXTRACTION (10/23-24) FEATURED ARTWORKS_PART 2 Diaphane Shahira Hammad @spontaneousorder Suspended, translucent textiles dyed with plants associated with Gowanus form passages for visitors to move through while scent extends beyond the fabric’s edges. Hammad’s research uses foraging, dyeing, and scent composition to draw attention to spontaneous vegetation often treated as unwanted growth. Against histories of industrial contamination and redevelopment, the installation invites a more embodied relationship with urban ecology. - Curated by Amy Xiaofan Jiang @amyjiang517 Presented by @uaad.art and @mesh_art_center Supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan; Japan Arts Council; CG-ARTS; WAN: Art & Tech Creators Global Network; and Japan Creator Support Fund. RSVP link in bio! Digested Objects William Takao Eliot @takaomakesthings Working with more than 150 mealworms, Eliot introduced sugar trails into discarded polystyrene to guide their feeding and create a three-legged stool prototype. The resulting patterns were 3D-scanned and enlarged into a stool fabricated in 3D-printed black sand with Sandhalden. The project treats non-human organisms as collaborators in making and challenges the assumption that design belongs solely to human intention. Sonic Biotics William Takao Eliot @takaomakesthings An interspecies performance bringing together a human performer and polystyrene-consuming mealworms. Contact microphones capture vibrations from the organisms’ activity, incorporating the sounds into live electronic composition. The work frames waste remediation as an exchange between species and asks whether collaboration can replace extractive relationships. Live performance: October 23, 8 PM.

Introducing the featured artists of THE SUBSTRATE OF EXTRACTION, a bio art exhibition presented by UAAD (@uaad.art) and MESH_ARTS (@mesh_art_center). Swipe Right👉 . . . 📍 MESH_ARTS, The Old American Can Factory, Brooklyn 📅 October 23–24, 2026 Curated by Amy Xiaofan Jiang @amyjiang517 Featuring Marina Lisa Komiya @monosugoiame Tsuyoshi Anzai @an2ai Shahira Hammad @spontaneousorder William Takao Eliot @takaomakesthings Yan Shao @ss.syan Supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan; Japan Arts Council; CG-ARTS; WAN: Art & Tech Creators Global Network; and Japan Creator Support Fund. RSVP link in bio! Tsuyoshi Anzai @an2ai is a Japanese artist whose practice explores the relationship between humans and plastic through sculpture, photography, and simple mechanical systems. Using improvised combinations of everyday objects and motors, he creates machines that reveal unexpected relationships between human-made materials and their environments. In recent years, his practice has focused on microplastics and the ways these nearly invisible materials circulate beyond their original functions. In his work Giant Micro Plastic, he transforms fragments of microplastic into monumental sculptural forms. By dramatically enlarging materials that are normally invisible to the human eye, Tsuyoshi shifts microplastic from an overlooked environmental residue into something physically and visually impossible to ignore. Lisa Marina Komiya @monosugoiame explores new forms of reproduction through a queer perspective, working across biotechnology, performance, video, manga, and other media. Their practice examines the relationships between bodies, technology, ecology, and systems of power. Marina is also the host of the queer artist platform “FAQ?” and a member of the collective “Reproductive Garden Project.” In their work CLEAN LIFE, Marina investigates the biological, ethical, and political systems surrounding cultured meat and cellular technologies. Projected onto a circular screen resembling a petri dish, the work combines real-time microscopic imagery of cells with an AI-generated voice-over trained on Marina’s voice. Thank you to everyone who came out to (Dis)consent at @mesh_art_center and spent time engaging with Cyborg Mirror II. A huge thank you to curator Amy Xiaofan Jiang @amyjiang517, and to Paige @_paigek and Isabella @isabellaindolfi at MESH_Arts, for creating the space for this work and bringing such an interesting group of artists together. And to the friends who came out to support the work — especially Paige, Dustin, Rachel, and Sean — it meant a lot to have you there. I’m also grateful to Onassis ONX @onx_studio for the fellowship and the opportunity to keep thinking through the speculative design of this AI interactive interface. Every time Cyborg Mirror II meets a new audience, I learn something about how people inhabit it, how they push against it, and where the work wants to go next. Thank you to my Cyborg Mirror II collaborators Shimmy Boyle @classicshimmy / Hyperreal Labs, C. Finley, and David Liu @david__liuuuu for continuing to build this with me. I’m looking forward to taking what we learned from this iteration into the new Cyborg Mirror II commission I’m currently developing with the amazing dancers of MashUp Contemporary Dance Company — and seeing what happens when the interface moves into a deeper choreographic relationship with performing bodies.

A look back at (Dis)consent: A Night of Performance and Interactive Installations, presented by @uaad.art and @mesh_art_center on Aug 2 💛 3 groups of artists brought together performance, interactive AI, and speculative ecology to examine agency and consent in systems where our choices are increasingly shaped by algorithms, interfaces, and institutions. 🪩 Katherine Helen Fisher @khfdance’s 𝘾𝙮𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙜 𝙈𝙞𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙧 𝙄𝙄 explored AI, audience data, and collective authorship. 🤳Mengna Da @yumedaaa’s 𝙎𝙊𝙐𝙍 𝙂𝙐𝙈𝙈𝙄𝙀𝙎 𝘿𝙊𝙉’𝙏 𝘾𝙍𝙔 turned the audience into operators of her own body, examining data extractivism and digital labor, with live music by Chienn Tai @desigh.llc. 🐝 Shihan Zhang @shihan.design’s 𝙐𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙚𝙨 𝙍𝙚𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣 reimagined pollination as embodied labor in a speculative post-ecological future, with movement performance by @dddyiliny. The evening concluded with a conversation on authorship, desire, play, and algorithmic control, moderated by @_paigek, co-founder of MESH_Arts. There’s a natural phenomenon we all know: some sea creatures “wear the dark” as camouflage, blending into their surroundings to protect themselves from predators. My friend Niki @nikihu_dan applied this phenomenon to humans. Naturally, as someone who loves the sea, she had just gone scuba diving about two months ago when she told me this story. But she spoke about camouflage through the lens of social psychology—how, when we perceive our environment as threatening, we may unconsciously conceal or reshape parts of our real selves in order to survive. Sometimes we forget who we are behind the mask because we wear it for too long for survival. And yet, we can learn to recognize the camouflage we’ve developed, understand why we needed it, and eventually discover that we are not confined to it. So we created an interactive work along with movement artist Sofia @sofias.space , To Wear the Dark, as an embodied exploration of this observation. I’m glad to have served as both the composer and narrative sound designer for this piece. Chenyu and I improvised the music together, and I did the post-production. Our work is showing at @abronsartscenter tomorrow evening with three other interactive works from the collective show “Orbit.” Aug 9 from 7-9pm, join us for an evening to explore how bodies and tech speak to each other. Event is free, but RSVP is required. You can find the link in bio.🪼 “Orbit” Presented by @inmotion_nyu Supported by @uaad.art

Syncture presents an audio-visual movment performance Inspired by the idea of relational motion, Orbit is a live performance showcase about how bodies, systems, and technologies influence one another. An orbit is both the path one body takes around another and the act of moving in circles. As the ways we live and connect continue to change, what can orbit—the path, the repetition, the pull—tell us about moving together? How can technology be reimagined to shape movement, emotion, and our relationships with one another and the spaces around us? Aug 9 (Sun) | 7–9 PM | RSVP in bio [Free] Doors: 6:30 PM Abrons Arts Center @abronsartscenter Experimental Theater 466 Grand St, New York, NY Presented by In Motion (@inmotion_nyu ), supported by Underground Art And Design (@uaad.art )
