On Saturday, we celebrated the opening of Jack Valentine’s (@jackvalent1ne’s) exhibition at Plomacy, 𝙁𝙪𝙣 𝘽𝙖𝙙 𝙏𝙞𝙢𝙚.

The paintings draw on the visual cues of science fiction, with empty scenes and absent figures that recall the artificial worlds of 1980s cinema. Technology, anxiety and imagined futures are rendered through saturated colour, humour and spectacle, giving the paintings an uncanny mix of optimism and dread about what lies ahead.

Spring Fling at The Brixton 🏡

Last Saturday the lawn was full, records were spinning all afternoon, the BBQ smoke drifted the whole way down the street and for a few hours the house did what it does best — brought people together.

To every vendor who set up a stall, every DJ who kept the day moving, and everyone who wandered in for a record, thrift or just because — thank you. This is the whole reason we wanted to do it.

See you at the next one 🌱

NEPHI TUPAEA’s ‘Colonial Studio’ appropriates Jean-Auguste Dominque Ingres’ ‘Portrait of the Princess de Broglie’ (1851) held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Tupaea writes:
“This painting honours and evokes the Māori who entered colonial photographic studios during the 19th and early 20th Century.

I have photos of my great-grandparents from this time, dressed in Edwardian fashions.

They presented themselves with dignity, confidence and mana.

The clothing may have been European but the people wearing it were firmly grounded in whakapapa.

Māori cultural records were usually maintained orally and through waiata, but early photographic studios have been another way for us to preserve our histories.

My painting suggests that assimilation is not always a one-way process.

It asks whether Māori were assimilated into a colonial world or whether, in fact, we continually adapted.

Our tūpuna were not passive participants in history.

Rather they were skilled and active navigators of immense social and cultural change.”

Last weekend, we celebrated the opening of Emily Hartley-Skudder’s Fair Trust Art Prize award exhibition, 𝘾𝘼𝙈𝙀𝙊, at Te Manawa Museum + Gallery. Bringing together pristine still-life paintings of cleaning products, she-wees and baby bottles with surreal constructions, the exhibition looks to Palmerston North’s Ladies Rest to explore feminism, intersectionality, cleanliness and control.
