People are at the heart of the work. ❤️

In the summer 2026 issue of UIC Applied Health Sciences Magazine, meet the people connecting research, education and community to make a difference:

🥕 Toi Johnson is helping Chicago children build lifelong nutrition and cooking skills.

🌎 Yolanda Suarez-Balcazar is sustaining an 18-year partnership advancing disability inclusion across borders.

🔬 Kacey Suvada is bringing biomechanics beyond the lab and making science more accessible.

💙 A scholarship is carrying forward physical therapist Christina “Chrissy” Smith’s passion for helping others.

Different stories. One shared purpose: helping people lead healthy, self-determined lives.

Meet Your Neighbors 🤝

Students from the UIC Doctor of Physical Therapy program recently organized a “Meet Your Neighbor” event with students from the UIC Doctor of Occupational Therapy program!

This student-led gathering created an opportunity for future PTs and OTs to connect, build friendships, and get to know their peers across rehabilitation disciplines in a casual and welcoming environment.

Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and the broader rehabilitation community are all part of one interconnected team. Building relationships and camaraderie across disciplines from the beginning of professional training helps lay the foundation for collaboration throughout our students’ future careers.

We’re proud of our students for taking the initiative to bring their neighbors together and we look forward to more opportunities to connect across our rehabilitation community!

Please join us in welcoming our UIC Occupational Therapy Level II fieldwork students to GiGi's Playhouse Chicago!

We're excited to once again partner with the University of Illinois Chicago's Occupational Therapy program as these students complete their fieldwork experience at the Playhouse. Alongside their faculty supervisor, Amy, they'll be leading and supporting some of our favorite programs while creating meaningful experiences for our participants.

You'll see Ella, Riley, and Jenna leading GiGiFIT Kids, while Becca, Kate, and Meredith will be supporting our Thursday evening adult programs, including GiGi's Kitchen and GiGiFIT Adult.

Their passion, creativity, and dedication help make our programs fun, engaging, and empowering for every participant. We're grateful for this continued partnership with UIC and are excited to have these incredible students as part of the GiGi's Playhouse Chicago family.

Welcome, Ella, Riley, Jenna, Becca, Kate, Meredith, and Amy!

“It’s amazing that just squeezing my legs provided so much relief from the tension. I’ll definitely continue doing that.”

Sometimes the simplest techniques can make the biggest difference. Thank you to our UIC OT students for sharing practical strategies that promote body awareness, and self-care!
