COHABITATION ACTS: COMMONS, RITUALS, CONFLICTS, AND SOME PARADIGMS OF ARCHITECTURE
Valerio Franzone (@v.franzone) OCHAP | Office for Cohabitation Processes (@ochap.xyz)

Cohabitation Acts reframes architecture as an act of cohabitation between diverse, complex societal and environmental systems. It proposes that architecture incorporates approaches to address the same crises it participates in as a consequence of a broader, critical economic and political structure. Cohabitation Acts examines the built environment and its implications with various environmental and societal systems to investigate the discipline’s limits, potentialities, and roles, exploring where design can go and how.

Museum for Contemporary Art, Panama

Architecture rarely begins with a building.
It begins with drawings, models, conversations and a continuous process of testing ideas.

For this competition proposal for the MAC Panama, sketches, physical models and digital representations were developed in parallel. Each medium became a way of exploring the project from a different perspective, gradually transforming an initial intuition into an architectural proposition.
Especially in this project that is the result of an amazing collaboration with @lgsm.a and @ochap.xyz sharing ideas, point of views and methodologies.

Conceived as a permeable organism, the museum establishes a continuous dialogue with the city. By day, its photovoltaic façades generate renewable energy; by night, they become a public interface, projecting images, sounds and artworks back into the urban landscape.

The project proposes a museum that extends beyond its own walls, where architecture becomes both civic infrastructure and cultural medium.

The building structure combines steel, bricks, and concrete in a complementary system. Steel defines a lightweight perimeter, enabling transparency and large spans. Load-bearing brick walls form the inner core, supporting vertical loads and providing thermal inertia. Concrete slabs ensure rigidity, supported by a steel grid that increases span capacity and integrates exhibition systems.

The double-skin north façade functions as a “biofiltering greenhouse,” integrating vegetation that improves air quality and enhances thermal and acoustic performance.
The green roof is a rainwater-regulating system that retains and reuses rainwater to irrigate the façade’s vegetation, while mitigating the urban heat island effect.
