OCHAP | Office for Cohabitation Processes is an architectural design and research office directed by Valerio Franzone, and based in New York and Rome.

OCHAP works at the intersection between architecture, humanity, and nature to foster the built environment's relational and sustainable character by investigating architecture's limits, potentialities, and roles. Shape, tectonics, program, and processuality become devices to explore possible cohabitation counter-typologies and strategies between different natural and artificial systems at multiple scales.

OCHAP develops architecture’s cohabitation potential to oppose individualistic, exploitive, colonial, discriminatory, and extractive approaches by understanding the ecological, cultural, social, economic, technological, and political processes involved. OCHAP rethinks architecture’s status quo to tackle the urgencies of societies and ecosystems and envision other possible futures.

6th Avenue Residences
New York City, 2021-2022

@ochap.xyz (@v.franzone), @offcut_design_fabrication (@jchernak)

6th Avenue Residences is a prototype for a new kind of living; it redefines the cohabitation between humans, the environment, and the city through simple means. Located in Greenwich Village, it comprises 16 residential units, a retail ground floor, and common outdoor natural areas on different levels.
With its brickwork, arched windows, and a metal structure supporting the balconies and greenhouses, the facade pays homage to New York’s typical older residential buildings and their fire escapes.
Still, its relationship with the city is more articulated, including different kinds of spaces that regulate the social and environmental relationship between the private and public realms. 6th Avenue Residences is an ongoing cohabitation among different systems.

Thrilled to join Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (@columbiagsapp) to teach Core Studio I (@gsappcore1), coordinated by Mireia Luzárraga (@mireialuzarraga) of TAKK (@we_are_takk).
It’s exciting to be part of such an incredible cohort of architectural thinkers and practitioners. Thanks to Mireia, Dean Andrés Jaque (@andres_jaque), and the Director of the Master of Architecture Program, Marc Tsurumaki, for inviting me.

COHABITATION ACTS: COMMONS, RITUALS, CONFLICTS, AND SOME PARADIGMS OF ARCHITECTURE
Valerio Franzone (@v.franzone) OCHAP | Office for Cohabitation Processes (@ochap.xyz)

Cohabitation Acts reframes architecture as an act of cohabitation between diverse, complex societal and environmental systems. It proposes that architecture incorporates approaches to address the same crises it participates in as a consequence of a broader, critical economic and political structure. Cohabitation Acts examines the built environment and its implications with various environmental and societal systems to investigate the discipline’s limits, potentialities, and roles, exploring where design can go and how. by @v.franzone

MAC Panamá
Museum of contemporary art. Competition entry. Ciudad de Panamá, 2026

@ochap.xyz (@v.franzone), @2apassociates (@gbombaci, @neomatteo), @lgsm.a (@luca_galofaro, Stefania Manna)

The MAC Panamá is a permeable organism, a radical open space in dialogue with the surrounding environment. It’s a processual relationship established via spatial, technological, and natural strategies that creates a new social, cultural, and environmental bond between the museum and the city.
The building’s core is shaped as continuous, adaptable exhibition areas that reject rigid layouts and allow spaces to adapt to curatorial configurations, becoming a stage machine. The ground level is now a civic platform, transforming the museum into a public catalyst.
The building structure integrates steel, concrete, and bricks to achieve transparency, rigidity, and thermal inertia. The double-skin north façade is a biofiltering greenhouse improving the internal air quality and thermal and acoustic performance. The south façade incorporates photovoltaic panels. The green roof collects and reuses rainwater to irrigate internal vegetation, while mitigating the building's internal temperature and the urban heat island effect. These strategies make the building a high-performance environmental system with advanced sustainability standards.

CECA — The Cooperative for Environmental Consciousness and Alternatives
Museum for climate action. Competition entry, 2020

@ochap.xyz (@v.franzone), @linda.schilling.cuellar, @dawnhannyc

The neoliberal economy, the subsequent climate crisis, and social inequality have pushed the planet to a tipping point. Reinterpreting museums as new public typologies is key: a platform for bringing human and non-human entities together to collaborate on creating new world-making plans not rooted in anthropocentrism.
The CECA challenges the limits of museums, where exhibition items are far removed from their original contexts in time and place. Re-establishing an intimate relationship between the planet and its inhabitants reminds us that Earth’s fate is the essence of human and more-than-human bodies. The CECA is a system that helps us envision and achieve alternative futures through various sustainable developments.
CECA units monitor the planet’s health and rebalance its environments. They envelop processes and systems composed of nature, humanity, and technology, summarizing the planet’s complexity. The units address the crisis environments face: a healing device in polluted environments, whereas in virgin ecosystems, it is just a sensory system to monitor the environment.

“On Participation, Identity, and Cohabitating San Ferdinando” is the conversation I had with the mayor of San Ferdinando and the citizens and nonprofits that participated in the @visioni.collettive.festival in 2023. It is part of the book “Architecture as Commoning Practice” (@ziczic_ 2025), edited by @orsiniale and @nickroseboro. The book presents the activities curated by @architensions and @disio.culturalcentre during the festival, and explores how commoning practices shape the built environment. It also includes the workshops authored by Hilary Sample of @mmmosarchitects, @annapuigjaner and @gguuiilloopp of @maioarchitects, and by Architensions, as well as a text by @marcelolopezdinardi. by @v.franzone
