Fate Line Friday: Gam Zeh Ya’avor (This Too Shall Pass)

This Friday I will be celebrating with my family Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and my Uncle Sol’s 80th birthday. I am also still revelling in the release of our own gorgeous bit of TIFF-worthy filmic art, Vered Goldman’s music video for “Golden Shadow.” What do all these things have in common? Jewish wondrousness that shall pass but is still something to know and celebrate and remember.

Gam Zeh Ya’avor (גַּם זֶה יַעֲבֹר) is a Hebrew phrase meaning “this too shall pass.” The literal translation is “also this will pass.” A famous proverb about the impermanence of all things — both good times and bad, it is attributed to King Solomon in Jewish folklore. Considered a Jewish prophet, Solomon is portrayed as wealthy, wise and powerful. (And Simon says, a sexy dude, as referenced in the erotic poetry celebrating human love of the Song of Solomon or Song of Songs). In Jewish and Persian-influenced stories, Solomon is either the person who delivers the lesson or the king who is taught humility by it.

It is miraculous for a family that survived the Holocaust, born out of the darkest days in Jewish and world history that did not bring on ends of times, that 18 of us can celebrate the sweetness of the Jewish New Year (5787) together, while ringing in our Uncle Solomon’s 80th. Solly was born in an Austrian Displaced Persons (DP) camp in 1946, is the former president of the Canada YMCAs and a successful kidney transplant recipient.

And my connection made this year with an amazing Jewish Israeli artist, Vered Goldman, who created the artwork for our new album and music video, also feels miraculous. Both of us, separated by oceans in geography and decades in age, are children of Holocaust survivors who have connected through our art - and the results are golden. So while this moment is still upon us, I am submitting the music video to various film festivals and continue to share with whoever is interested to watch and listen, this work of art about resilience and remembering the golden that has passed or is still within us. (Post continued in first comment).

A heartfelt merci this morning from Simon and I from our home away from home, Lindsay’s beautiful old farmhouse in Ogden, Quebec - a thank you to all who attended and all who helped put on last night’s memorable and meaningful event at Le Vieux Forgeron Gallery in Stanstead. Vered’s magical video of “Golden Shadow” is now up on our YouTube channel for viewing and listening (link in bio) and on display at the Gallery for one last day before it closes for the season. We look forward to returning here next year for what has become, in Gabriel Safdie’s kind words last night, a beautiful annual tradition.#livemusic #newmusic #torontoband #quebecmusic #merci

The video has landed! :)

We are thrilled that you all can now watch on our Shiner YouTube channel Vered’s @veredgoldman beautiful visual rendition of our song, Golden Shadow, off our new album - The Paradox of Life Confounds. https://youtu.be/Gb9xf48ZqXg?si=d3ZTDCxAVZ0gHfGK (Link also in bio).

For those of you in and around Stanstead, Quebec this afternoon, we will be performing it and other original Shiner and Simon Law @funkyginger tunes at the 5 à 7 at Le Vieux Forgeron Art Gallery @levieuxforgeronartgallery, where the video is on currently display. And in case of rain, the music will move indoors to the old Eastern Townships Bank, now a venue just next-door to the art gallery. (Note the picture of Simon, gazing off to the American side of the town - Derby Line, Vermont - from the front steps of the old bank in a photo taken a couple of years and gigs ago). One of artists on display at the gallery, Verona Sorensen @veronasorensen, will have a book launch at 5pm and then music starts just after 5:30pm.

Should be a golden long weekend!

Fate Line Friday: A Golden Shoutout

On this day before the premiere of our “Golden Shadow” music video and 5 à 7 musical performance at Le Vieux Forgeron Art Gallery here in Stansted, Quebec, we feel glimpses of joys to come.

The anticipation has its own sense of satisfaction- rehearsing the music last night at the beautiful farmhouse we currently call home felt exciting, finessing these duet incarnations of our Shiner songbook. And visiting the gallery yesterday to set up a viewing and listening station for the video, with wonderful help from artists and gallery managers Tosha and Diana Callaway, also felt very special.

We are truly grateful to those that have supported this project - especially Eva Juul and Gabriel Safdie - and for the opportunity to be a little part of their magical place - this old blacksmith’s barn, beautifully converted into an art gallery that sits along the Tomiphobia River’s edge - just a stones throw from the famous Haskell Library, Canusa Street and the Canada/US border. (It was fun grabbing a bite yesterday at La Vieille Doane restaurant that just opened up next door to the gallery, literally a former border crossing right next to one of the current Vermont/Quebec checkpoints). One of the artists whose pieces are currently on display at the gallery - Douce Rabi - includes little portraits of the crossing guards from this border town.

So a little video shout out that we recorded yesterday at the gallery - especially a shout out across the many borders and ponds to Florence, Italy, and Vered Goldman, for her special visualization of our song. And some images from this part of the world that feels quite peaceful, despite or maybe because of the belligerent talk from current leaders here in North America.

It’s been a long while since I was in Florence, Italy traveling around with my sister Arianne back in the summer of 1986, some 40 years ago, but courtesy of a wonderful collaboration with the artist Vered Goldman, who calls Florence her home right now, I’ve had a reconnection with that beautiful part of the globe.

Vered is the visual artist who has created and directed the music video for our song “Golden Shadow” which is premiering this Saturday virtually on our Shiner YouTube channel and live at an art gallery in Stansted, Quebec - Le Vieux Forgeron Galerie D’Art.

Golden Shadow (Music Video) - https://youtu.be/Gb9xf48ZqXg?feature=shared

One of the visuals Vered uses in the animation is an image from the very famous carousel in the Piazza della Republica in Florence - an antique wooden carousel with 20 horses and two gilded “king’s carriages,” run for four generations by the Picci family and dating back to the beginning of the 20th century.

As Vered comments about our album collaboration and the carousel’s use in the Golden Shadow video:

“[the video]opens with a paper cut-out of an antique carousel near my home in Florence. It quietly echoes the Ferris wheel on the album cover we created together, extending its visual language while introducing another symbol of childhood and nostalgia. A carousel repeats the same circular journey endlessly - always
returning, yet never quite arriving at the same moment. It felt like a fitting image for memory itself.”

The wooden carousel also echoes the wooden roller coaster featured in the video for our French song from the album, Fin Du Monde.

Comparing our short, brutish but profound life to a roller coaster ride, I created a video for the song using footage from the wooden roller coaster Le Monstre at La Ronde amusement park in Montreal, a ride I used to marvel at though never dared to mount when we would visit as children and teenagers.

Fin Du Monde (Lyric Video) - https://youtu.be/zN6YLFco1ug?si=ZIIC9kp7RTie04Rh

I’m excited to see these connections manifest between glimpses of joy’s past and present - both here in Quebec, and as far away as Florence Italy.

Arrived last night in Ogden at Tamarack Farm to a sweet gift from our friend and host, Lindsay, and just in time for a beautiful sunset view from the chairs on the hill. It was also lovely to receive a mailout from the Centre D’art de Stanstead with a gig poster they put together for us, though Simon will have to seriously work on his chops to be considered a “guitariste” in our band! :) Hope to see those who are in the Eastern Townships or nearby on Saturday, September 5 for our early evening of music and socializing at Le Vieux Forgeron Art Gallery. We will be premiering the beautiful music video by Vered Goldman of a song will also be performing - Golden Shadow. #gratitude #livemusic #newmusic #newvideo #easterntownships

Fate Line Friday- A Glimpse of Joy’s Past

On this penultimate Friday post before our gig in Stansted and the release of the music video for Golden Shadow, we wanted to share a teaser or glimpse of the video for you all before it premieres on September 5.

Simon and I are to head off to the Eastern Townships of Quebec tomorrow and be back at Le Vieux Forgeron Art Gallery to play some music as a duo again. We’re equally excited to show you all Vered Goldman’s beautiful visualization of our song, Golden Shadow, off our new album The Paradox of Life Confounds.

I wanted to share here, in her own words and with her permission, a little bit from Vered about her process and the piece:

“Rather than approaching the song as a narrative, I imagined it as a living memory, something that shifts constantly between presence and absence. The film combines paper cut-outs made from filmed frames, and digital and hand-drawn animation. These visual languages exist in a constant dialogue, moving between stillness and motion, memory and reality. A filmed moment becomes a paper object, an illustration briefly comes alive before dissolving again. Nothing remains fixed for long. It opens with a paper cut-out of an antique carousel near my home in Florence. It quietly echoes the Ferris wheel on the album cover we created together, extending its visual language while introducing another symbol of childhood and nostalgia. A carousel repeats the same circular journey endlessly - always returning, yet never quite arriving at the same moment. It felt like a fitting image for memory itself. Throughout the video, I wanted to capture a fleeting emotional state, a beautiful moment that slips away almost as soon as it appears. Like a golden ray of sunlight entering through a window on a cloudy day, these moments cannot be possessed - they can only be witnessed.” (Post continued in the comments)
