What happens when we begin with the material — before the silhouette, before the object, before the idea takes form?

Presented by Afro Fashion Association in partnership with OPOS, Matter Matters brings together nine designers for an exploration of material, design, research, technology and production.

Developed over nine months of mentorship, experimentation and exchange, the project places matter at the centre of the creative process — connecting a new generation of designers with the material research and production knowledge developed through OPOS.

Nine designers. Three material families. One starting point: matter.

Join us during Milano Fashion Week for the opening of Matter Matters.

Look 010.

Soft-shoulder blouson in taupe English wool, constructed with a sportswear underarm gusset for maximum articulation. Finished with wood button closures and a dangling silk flower stem brooch.

Styled with fine Batik Peranakan from Pekalongan, Indonesia — a highly complex textile tradition that can take more than six weeks to produce, preserved today by only a small number of master artisans.

Look 001.

Crafted from @scarto.ig Italian deadstock fabrics. The under-collar and chest are adorned with reclaimed beads from unsold evening dresses. Each bead was taken apart, regrouped, and re designed into a completely new composition - giving forgotten materials a second life.

Look 003.

A black tailored jacket with dangling contrast stitch detailing. Gunmetal spheres and buttons combined with reclaimed beads embellish the collar and lapel, creating movement and light against the dark surface.

Worn with an Indonesian sarong in the Sidomukti Garuda motif, a traditional pattern symbolizing prosperity, harmony, and dignity. The Garuda, a mythical bird, represents strength, protection, and divine power.
