Brenda Gomez was working in hospitality when she decided to change everything. With a grant from the Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund, she spent 5 months in the Cayman Islands doing a marine biology internship, learned to dive for the first time, travelled to India for a wedding, then spent 5 months in Australia diving the Great Barrier Reef and Bali.

This is the first episode of the WEF podcast. Brenda talks about what it took to leave a career that wasn't hers, what it feels like to breathe underwater for the first time, and what happens when you say yes to a plan that scares you.

The Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund awards grants of $5,000–$10,000 to young people aged 18–26 whose dreams are bigger than their budget. Adventure, sport, or vocation. If the only thing standing between you and the plan is money, apply at finnwardman.com.

Thirty-one months ago, I was walking down a jungle path in Indonesia, tracing the footsteps of my son. I remember watching Finn move, and feeling the profound weight of a simple truth: Life was perfect. It was one of the last times we spent together as a four member family. I knew then with piercing clarity that I was living the days I would treasure forever.

Today the landscape of our lives has shifted beyond recognition. The "perfect" has been replaced by a journey through anguish and the long shadows of grief. But even in the silence Finn left behind, his light joy and beautiful spirit shines on.

We created the Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund to ensure that Finn’s energy—the way he illuminated every path he crossed—continues to move through this world. Today, that light shines through Brenda as she follows in some of the same exact places Finn dove and enjoyed that summer.

Brenda, as you embark on your own journey, we salute your courage and your spirit. My greatest hope is that you find the same pure, unadulterated joy on your travels that I found that day walking behind my son. Go safely, find wonder, and carry a piece of his light with you.

I’m living a dream I once imagined.

My internship with Marine Parks Queensland has become such a meaningful part of that dream by learning every day about marine and land conservation, and being surrounded by people in Australia who genuinely inspire me to make this world better.

I’m so grateful for this opportunity, the Finn Wardman legacy is something I’ll carry with me forever.

The Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund believes that every young adult deserves the chance to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles. Through our World Explorer Grants, we create bespoke, tailor-made packages designed around each young adult’s unique vision.

The incredible young people you see in these photos are our grantees, the heart of this mission. Their journeys, supported by grants ranging from 6 months for $5,000 to 12 months for $10,000, are about so much more than funding. They are pathways to growth, leadership, cultural exchange, and discovery.

Inspired by Finn, who embraced every wave, mountain, and challenge with joy and courage, these individuals are pushing beyond boundaries to see what’s possible.

Together, we are making dreams a reality, one dream at a time.
