Thirty-one months ago, I was walking down a jungle path in Indonesia, tracing the footsteps of my son. I remember watching Finn move, and feeling the profound weight of a simple truth: Life was perfect. It was one of the last times we spent together as a four member family. I knew then with piercing clarity that I was living the days I would treasure forever.

Today the landscape of our lives has shifted beyond recognition. The "perfect" has been replaced by a journey through anguish and the long shadows of grief. But even in the silence Finn left behind, his light joy and beautiful spirit shines on.

We created the Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund to ensure that Finn’s energy—the way he illuminated every path he crossed—continues to move through this world. Today, that light shines through Brenda as she follows in some of the same exact places Finn dove and enjoyed that summer.

Brenda, as you embark on your own journey, we salute your courage and your spirit. My greatest hope is that you find the same pure, unadulterated joy on your travels that I found that day walking behind my son. Go safely, find wonder, and carry a piece of his light with you.

🌵Governance, justice and sustainability in coastal developement @miss_elasmo 🩵. It was a whole week dedicated to ocean conservation in a special place for me, with a focus on governance, citizen science and community engagement. Through lots of fieldwork, we participated in the conservation efforts across desert ecosystems, mangroves and rocky reefs. 🌵🪸🌱🐠

What a gift to learn from this team of passionate scientists and the community.

Brenda Gomez was working in hospitality when she decided to change everything. With a grant from the Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund, she spent 5 months in the Cayman Islands doing a marine biology internship, learned to dive for the first time, travelled to India for a wedding, then spent 5 months in Australia diving the Great Barrier Reef and Bali.

This is the first episode of the WEF podcast. Brenda talks about what it took to leave a career that wasn't hers, what it feels like to breathe underwater for the first time, and what happens when you say yes to a plan that scares you.

Esta estrella de mar "Estrella cojín" (Oreaster reticulatus) fue uno de mis primeros encuentros fascinantes mientras hacía snorkel en el Caribe.
Son recolectadas como souvenirs o para tomarse fotos fuera del agua, y si bien no están en peligro, sus poblaciones han disminuído a través de los años por estas acciones. Así que este es un recordatorio que podemos proteger a las estrellas de mar (y cualquier organismo) con el simple acto de no tocarlas 🫰🏽

Enamorada de todas las formas perfectas que el mundo marino tiene 🩵🩵

Porongurup National Park 🍃🪵🌱🍂🌳
Such a special place to explore.
This national park is part of the Australian Southwest biodiversity hotspot! Being one of 34 regions of the world recognized for having a rich diversity of flora (mainly) and fauna 🥺.
And of course, having this amazing humans that made this part of my trip very special!

📍ALBANY, WA 🦘🇦🇺 FWWEF

Una hermosa caminata en la costa de Albany de lo que ahora son las ruinas del primer faro de navegación que guiaba barcos al puerto de la ciudad y el segundo faro construido en toda la provincia (Western Australia). El faro junto con la vivienda fueron construidos en 1853 y manejado manualmente por "fareros"hasta que en 1913 instalaron electricidad para automátizarlo, y desde ese entonces se fue deteriorando poco a poco hasta que quedó como se ve en las fotos.

Gracias a @finnwardmanfund por motivarme a tomar ese vuelo para viajar a Australia y vivir estas experiencias tan especiales 🐚

❗️Los koalas están en peligro en Australia y están clasificados como Vulnerable en la lista roja de la IUCN 🔴

🐨Sus principales amenazas:

🔥Sequías, altas temperaturas e incendios (intensificados por el cambio climático).
💨Reducción de las áreas con “clima” adecuado para su supervivencia.
🦠 Enfermedades como el koala retrovirus (KoRV) y la clamidia.
🌳Pérdida de hábitat por deforestación, minería, desarrollos, etc.
❌Muertes por atropellamientos y ataques de perros y gatos ferales.

Verlos en su hábitat siendo tan vulnerables, sin miedo y descansando es algo que voy a guardar siempre en mi corazón. Fui una bióloga muy feliz gracias a @finnwardmanfund 💚

I’m living a dream I once imagined.

My internship with Marine Parks Queensland has become such a meaningful part of that dream by learning every day about marine and land conservation, and being surrounded by people in Australia who genuinely inspire me to make this world better.

I’m so grateful for this opportunity, the Finn Wardman legacy is something I’ll carry with me forever.
