Rundgang @udkberlin and @udktypo today and tomorrow, do consider coming to Medienhaus, room 306! We are showing the results of ”Wortbild“ class, where students designed the letters for a word of their choice, part of the Dainas project from the Winter term in collaboration with @makslasakademija @grafikas.katedra and @stop.spot.post , as well as the preliminary tests for Hong Kong Street Face wood type lathe/laser cutting.

In July 2017, we held the first TypeSchool in Shanghai, where the classroom gathered the author of Glyphs, @schriftgestalt, type designer @wilhelm.roman , German designer @susanne_zippel, as well as our friends @ryukeikun @lianghai @mira.n.ying and others who collaborated with us. Time flies, and in just a blink, we are about to welcome the tenth TypeSchool Latin this July, still in Shanghai, still learning Glyphs, studying calligraphy, and learning how to develop a complete alphabet starting from the lowercase letters 'o' and 'n'.

Many friends might wonder what growth and changes TypeSchool has gone through after ten years. Our answer is: from naiveté to youthfulness, and gradually towards maturity. We have not only witnessed the growth of a generation of young Chinese designers, but we have also gained a more comprehensive understanding of type design and technology in the digital age, as well as know-how of the best way for Chinese to learn Latin type design.

Change always occurs subtly. Every year, we adjust the courses based on our existing experiences and feedback obtained from the previous year's course. This year, our curriculum becomes compact, but the content of lectures and workshops remains rich and diverse. In addition to experience classes, technical classes, and design classes, there will also be online and offline sharing, guidance, and feedback from professional type designers both from China and abroad. Although the course time is short, it is enough for anyone interested in type design to glimpse the richness and intricacies of the culture and technology behind it within a week. While not everyone can make beautiful letter form in just a few days, the knowledge framework has already unfolded, and connections with like-minded individuals have begun to form.

This July, we are thrilled to have invited @thomashuotmarchand, director of the @anrt_type , which has over forty years of history. He will lead a master workshop focusing on optical sizes in type design.

Organizing a small universe in our new space rack taken from @fhpotsdam.design — 24 pt (German traditional term: Zwei Cicero); 36 pt (drei Cicero); 48 pt (Konkordanz or Vier Cicero). Found also some 28 pt (Doppelmittel) en squares, rare stuff. Typographic gold. The old size indicators will have to be taped over though. @hkopenpress @singhungprinter27 #letterpress #buchdruck #bleisatz #handsaw #leadtype

Helmut Brade: „Requisitenbriefe“ MMKoehn Verlag, S.5

——

C*SPACE has got a new landmark that condensed the spirit of the Europe Learning Café & Lab on September 22-26.

From 𝙘𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙤 sum to ergo 𝙘𝙪𝙢 - 𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 to I am because I am 𝘞𝘐𝘛𝘏

A simple thought that we always exist TOGETHER with others, and should cultivate the solidarity and collective support, as one of the core values. The artwork was created over a Friday evening by Roman Wilhelm @wilhelm.roman, designer, typographer, educator and head of UdK Typography Lab.
