This is a sleeveless version of the Queenie jumpsuit💛 The sewing pattern is published in @taukomagazine no. 14, Denim issue. Sewing denim is an exhilarating experience for me as I let myself go beyond my comfort zone. What makes it more exciting is the handwoven denim I used for this project. Denim is not really an Indonesian traditional textile, but hand weaving is Indonesian cultural identity. While working on Queenie, I met a local artisan @craftdenim.id who has been developing handwoven denim since 2012.

Determined to revive the weaving tradition that was almost extinct in their town, they created denim using traditional techniques. Even though it takes four times longer to weave denim than regular cotton they usually made, they nailed it after going through some experiments. They maintain the traditional weaving process that has been passed down from their ancestors, including using wooden looms and natural dye, to preserve both culture and nature. They collaborate with other local artisans and farmers to plant, harvest and spin their own cotton, and grow their own indigo plants for the natural blue dye.

For my sleeveless Queenie jumpsuit, I use Craft Denim’s 10 oz natural dyed single handspun denim. The rough slub as seen in random white dots in the jumpsuit I made is typical of the handspun yarns. Love it! For this project, I had a chance to visit their workshop studio where they do the weaving and dyeing process. Swipe the slides and look at the dancing feet of the weaver!

The blouse underneath is made with Simplicity’s vintage pattern from 1969 using traditional tie-dye fabric from the same city where the denim textile is from, Pekalongan, a UNESCO Creative Cities Network for craft and folk arts.

Inspired by Alexander McQueen's denim dresses that look bold and classic, yet chic and elegant, I wanted to bring out the delicate side of denim’s manly character. If only I could have one of his denim dresses *daydream mode is on*😄

Anyway, I prefer pants over dresses, so I designed this wide-leg low-back puff sleeves jumpsuit. I feel like it’s easy to have a look with this denim jumpsuit without being either under-dressed or over-dressed. I think that's what it's like to be queen. Never getting it wrong😊

And you can’t never have enough pockets! Queenie has both patch pockets and flap pockets😎

I made a 7/8 long jumpsuit, but Queenie is flexible with any lengths, also with or without sleeves. This jumpsuit is made with 12 oz denim with contrast topstitching.

Queenie jumpsuit sewing pattern is now released in @taukomagazine no. 14, the Denim issue✨ Its nine sizes ranging from 31"/78cm bust to 57.5"/146cm bust. It’s also available in a pdf sewing pattern. Check through the link on my bio.
