Graphic design for “Vico Magistretti and Japan”, organised at the Fondazione Vico Magistretti. The exhibition examines how a persistent interest in Japanese culture emerges throughout the work of the Milanese architect and designer, who developed projects with Japanese clients and designers, as well as with Italian companies operating in Japan. Archival materials (drawings, photographs, models, objects, videos) are presented alongside 1:6 miniature versions of Magistretti’s furniture, produced within ECAL’s Bachelor Industrial Design programme, and representations of his Japanese architectural projects by Dogma.

😊
Need a little smile in the middle of the dark season?
😊
Can happiness be designed? Curator Anniina Koivu explored the question in our main exhibition this September. Inspired by the “happiness cocktail” of dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins, the show brought together designers from around the world.
😊
One thing’s certain: the cocktail left us drunk on happiness.

Happiness is a paradox. It is both deeply personal and undeniably collective. And it cannot exist or be truly experienced without its opposite: sorrow, pain or discomfort.
Philosophers and scientists have long pondered and researched what makes a person happy. Aristotle defined happiness as a life shaped by purpose, a strong character and connection to others. Stoic thinkers saw happiness as an attitude towards life. Enlightenment philosophers emphasised the individual’s role in contributing to the greater good – arguing that one’s happiness grows when it benefits society as a whole.
This eternal quest continues, today. A multi-billion-euro industry – well-being trends, mindfulness apps, and self-help movements – is thriving. We are told to eat better, sleep more, slow down, breathe. Promising solutions, it is an industry that, ironically, often profits from unhappiness.
Governments have taken note, too. Well-being has entered into public agendas, with governmental ministries now measuring national emotional welfare, using the kinds of metrics formerly reserved for things like GDP. Since 2012, the UN’s annual World Happiness Report has ranked countries by happiness.
In this exhibition, rather than simply asking why Finland has topped the list for eight consecutive years, we focus on the conditions that enable happiness – and ask whether they can be intentionally and universally designed.
Research suggests that while part of our happiness is influenced by genetics and temperament, as much as 50% depends on external circumstances and conscious choices – factors we can shape, build and design.
In our study of the topic, we began with a set of scientifically proven contributors to human well-being: proximity to nature, natural light, music, meaningful relationships, human touch, trust and generosity, acts of kindness and physical activity. These are external triggers that can, in fact, be rethought – and redesigned. We then collected examples of products, services and environments that help improve well-being.
Can happiness be designed?
We think so.
