As everyone pressed forward with life, I was at a standstill, feeling nothing but loss. Unbeknownst to me, this was Allahs mercy. I never left my grandmother after the funeral, I stayed behind because I could see her loneliness and heart ache. How merciful is my Allah? Knowing the bond I shared with her and what was to come, He gifted me priceless, uninterrupted time to be by her side. I sat with her, listening to her endless tales, brightening her day with some laughter, praying with her, embracing her a little harder every time, pouring all my love for her to fill the space left by the absence of my grandfather. I’ll never forget the tears that streamed down my face sitting in front of her having to say goodbye. Had I known that it would be the last time, perhaps I might have admired the details of her face a little longer.

The denial of her death lingered for days, and reality only struck after seeing her once warm body being lowered in the cold, wet ground, it was unlike anything I have ever felt before. In one of our conversations, my grandmother asked why he had left her behind when they had decided to leave together, and it was on the day she died I learned how intertwined they truly were, soulmates in life and death, now buried together. SubhanAllah.

I see her sparkling eyes and bright smile in her granddaughter, I hear his voice, strong and proud, in his son. I see the way she walked in the footsteps of my mother, and the shape of his hands, gentle yet strong, in his children now grown. I feel her poetry running through my pen, and his art through the strokes of my brush, the spirit of their friendship, love and companionship, transcending time. Gone, but never truly gone.

Thank you Nanomama and Nanapapa for carrying my mother and for carrying me. I will serve as the good you left behind in this world for as long as I live. I love you.

Death has always been an odd thing for me. In the depths of my mind, it felt like a birthday, a celebration of souls finally arriving at their true destination, leaving behind the volatility of life. A momentary farewell of the physical form, but the essence of a person forever transcendent. The crossing of a temporary finish line, endless prayers for their triumph, and trust that they are safe with their Maker. Shouldn’t that suffice to comfort the hearts of those left behind?

My dear grandfather was buried 10.23.24 and my beloved grandmother on 11.23.24. How naive of me to intellectualize death. To leave unaccounted my own grief. To forget that time will continue in their absence, and what I carry of them today will have to last me a lifetime. What am I to do without their presence?

When my grandfather was in the hospital, I begged for his betterment, all the while preparing for his end. It took several months before I could finally ask Allah for what’s best, instead of his prolonged life. How selfish of me to want to keep him here when his pain could be seen with the naked eye. Yet, when the words finally left my sister, “Nanapapa has passed”, the ground beneath me crumbled, and despite all my plans and preparation, I inevitably sank. How naive of me to leave unaccounted my own grief. by @tamaniaaa

I went to Madeira with one goal in mind, to hike Pico Do Arieiro, but I wasn’t able to because of the wildfires, I was initially upset about it, but then I realized that I now have a reason to come back! And the next best thing was catching the sunrise there✨
