Segunda fase da expedição The Traveling Light 🌀🌾🌳

Depois de três dias no @freixodomeio, o grupo visitou vários projetos locais. Encontrámo-nos com Francisco Alves, no projeto de agricultura regenerativa @herdadesluis_porcusnatura, e fizemos uma caminhada de reconhecimento de plantas silvestres e saberes ancestrais com Ana Fonseca, da Universidade de Évora. Conhecemos o projeto da @cooperativa_casabranca, com Alexandra Libânio, e as novidades da @terratreme.filmes, com Luísa Homem. Na Azaruja, fomos muito bem recebidos por Maria do Carmo Duque, na @fabricacatala. Terminámos com uma sessão de trabalho sobre o projeto de criação do grupo e os próximos encontros.

Obrigada aos jovens e a todas as pessoas que nos acolheram, pela generosidade, pelo tempo e partilha de conhecimento. A caminhada continua!

After three days camping in Freixo do Meio, the group visited local projects: Herdade São Luís with Francisco Alves, a walk on wild plants and ancestral knowledge with Ana Fonseca (University of Évora), Casa Branca with Alexandra Libânio, Terra Treme with Luísa Homem, and Fábrica Catalã in Azaruja, where Maria do Carmo Duque welcomed us so warmly. We closed the expedition with a working session on the group’s creative project and next encounters.

Thank you to the group and to everyone who welcomed us, for the generosity, the knowledge and the time shared. The walk continues!

‘Ossos da Terra’

‘Ossos da Terra’ is a collectively created radio piece built from a raw, unedited recording of an informal conversation with my grandmother, Virtuosa, about rural life in the Alentejo during the Estado Novo: work, food, care, and bodily experience, including women’s labor and menstruation in conditions of scarcity. Its title, inspired by a chapter of Antunes da Silva’s Alentejo é Sangue, evokes the land as a living body where memory is held in gestures and passed between generations. Virtuosa’s voice is not an interview or a historical document, but an embodied archive. In dialogue with her, José Crespo and José Penacho compose original pieces from fragments of the recording and references to cante and work songs, where rhythm, repetition, and breath let speech and song coexist. From a feminist perspective, the piece recognizes subsistence and care practices as historically invisibilized knowledge. Radio becomes the space where memory is activated, these voices circulate again, and sound creation affirms continuity between generations.’🌾

‧₊˚ ⋅𓎩 ‧₊˚ ⋅ 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗿: 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝘂𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝘂𝗺

Mediation Session at Renovar a Mouraria:
What we know was also given to us.
Long before a recipe is written down, it exists in the body: in a hand that measures without measuring, in a particular way of cutting, in knowing how long to wait, in a flavour recognised before we know how to name it.
We learn how to eat by observing, repeating, refusing, experimenting. Around the table, knowledge circulates that we rarely recognise as such — small gestures passed between people, places and generations.
But what we receive never remains exactly the same. Every act of transmission also contains a transformation.
Perhaps that is what a recipe is: a memory that, in order to remain alive, needs to be allowed to change.

Sessão de mediação no Renovar a Mouraria:
Aquilo que sabemos também nos foi dado.
Muito antes de uma receita ser escrita, ela existe no corpo: numa mão que mede sem medir, numa determinada forma de cortar, no tempo que se sabe esperar, num sabor que se reconhece antes de saber nomeá-lo.
Aprendemos a comer observando, repetindo, recusando, experimentando. À mesa circulam conhecimentos que raramente reconhecemos enquanto tal — pequenos gestos transmitidos entre pessoas, lugares e gerações.
Mas aquilo que recebemos nunca permanece exatamente igual. Cada transmissão contém também uma transformação.
Talvez uma receita seja isso: uma memória que, para continuar viva, precisa de poder mudar.

A primeira fase da expedição The Traveling Light já começou. 🌀🔦🔭🌳

Nos últimos dias, o grupo de jovens do Alentejo mergulhou no @freixodomeio, em caminhadas geopoéticas com @davide_s._sapienza, exercícios de observação da paisagem, gravações de campo, caminhadas nocturnas, observação de estrelas, refeições partilhadas e uma visita à Aldeia do Neolítico com @manuel.calado.5. Dias de vagar pelo território, deixando que a paisagem alentejana ditasse o ritmo e abrisse novos modos de ver e de criar. Obrigada a este grupo de jovens tão cheio de talento, curiosidade e presença.

The first phase of The Traveling Light expedition has begun. 🌀🔦🔭🌳

Over the past few days, the group of young people from Alentejo immersed themselves in the @freixodomeio, on geopoetic walks with @davide_s._sapienza, landscape observation exercises, field recordings, night walks, stargazing, shared meals and a visit to the Neolithic Village with @manuel.calado.5. Days of wandering through the territory, letting the Alentejo landscape set the pace and open new ways of seeing and creating. Thank you to this group of young people, so full of talent, curiosity and presence.

THE TRAVELING LIGHT

It has been six long years and now I am finally here in Alentejo, the country of perception, in Portugal. We are taking to the field The Traveling Light, a project I imagined back in april 2020 and developed with the precious help and insight of Joana Krämer Horta, who is also the director of the festival Ponto d’Orvalho, under which umbrella we are here at Montado do Freixo do Meio with her and Mariana Martins de Oliveira.
Alentejo is a powerful experience, a source of landscapes, a sweet but overwhelming caress of the senses, a change of perception. Obrigado for this opportunity to take the geopoetic practice on step beyond, into the horizon.

Rede Micelar: Merenda para um Comum 🍄‍🟫🌿

Beneath the ground, mycelium spreads through an almost invisible network of filaments. It links organisms, transports matter, distributes resources, and sustains other forms of life.
Rede Micelar: Merenda para um Comum uses this image as a starting point to think about what connects and sustains us as a community.
In Mouraria, where different geographies, cultures, and ways of life coexist side by side, we see food as a territory of relationships: a place where memory, knowledge, matter, care, and survival circulate.
A recipe never begins solely with its ingredients. It carries learned gestures, journeys, adaptations, absences, abundance, and ways of making do with what is available.
It is through these relationships, some visible and others underground, that we start to weave a network.

Debaixo da terra, o micélio cresce através de uma rede de filamentos quase invisíveis. Liga organismos, transporta matéria, distribui recursos e torna possível a continuidade de outras formas de vida.
Rede Micelar: Merenda para um Comum parte desta imagem para pensar aquilo que nos liga e sustenta enquanto comunidade.
Na Mouraria, onde diferentes geografias, culturas e modos de vida habitam lado a lado, olhamos para a alimentação como um território de relação: um lugar onde circulam memória, conhecimento, matéria, cuidado e formas de sobrevivência.
Uma receita nunca começa apenas nos seus ingredientes. Carrega gestos aprendidos, deslocações, adaptações, ausências, abundâncias e formas de fazer com o que existe.
É a partir destas relações, algumas visíveis e outras subterrâneas, que começamos a desenhar uma rede.

🍃 Already missing this wonderful team and all the encounters that came with it.
This year, I had the pleasure of working as producer and curator of the installation and performance programme for (gentler) Futures Festival, alongside @bytheendofmay .
The programme brought together design and artistic practices, ecological thinking and different ways of gathering, creating space for conversations around regeneration, care and our relationships with the more-than-human.

So grateful to everyone who made this edition possible, and to this great team for making the whole process such a joy.

Still digesting my amazing beginning of June: between Munich and the lake in Herrsching am Ammersee.

I was part of the Forum “Plates and Other Collisions” by the Off the Menu Research Group from @uni.augsburg

Around friends, people I really admire, and others that were wonderful to meet, days in the woods were spent crafting, sharing ideas, recipes, and plates.

I’m very happy to invite you to another edition of 𝒪𝒩𝒟𝒜, the beautiful project by dear @catiiivo , with whom I have the pleasure of collaborating. Sharing work and creating meaningful moments with people who resonate with us deeply — artistically, emotionally, and humanly — feels like one of life’s greatest privileges, and I’m so happy to do this alongside Luísa.
𝒪𝒩𝒟𝒜 is a wellbeing-focused experience and, in this edition, sound therapy and food come together to offer you a very special afternoon.
On May 2nd, we’ll celebrate Beltane in the gardens of Solar de Gondomil (Braga) — a moment that marks the peak of spring, between the equinox and the summer solstice.
In Portugal, there is also a celebration with pagan roots connected to this season: Dia da Espiga (Ear of Wheat Day), traditionally celebrated in mid-May in some regions of the country and later absorbed by Catholicism as Ascension Day, 40 days after Easter. Originally, it honoured Flora, the Lusitanian goddess of fertility.
If you’ve never experienced a sound bath, this is a beautiful opportunity to explore this physical phenomenon and feel its effects on your body and nervous system — surrounded by nature, softness, and a little springtime whimsy. 🌸☀️🐛🧚🍄

I’ll present you with a snack inspired by the flora from this beautiful space. 🍰🧃
