🪡 The podcast stitching together the vibrant narratives of Palestinian embroidery!
🎙️ Hosted by @minamanne, @linasthobe & @tasneemtatreez
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Tatreez has never stood still.

It evolves. It travels. It speaks.

Our new Tatreez Talk identity reflects exactly that. Centering the cypress tree, a symbol deeply embedded in tatreez history, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. It represents what Tatreez Talk has always been about: honoring tradition while making space for growth, creativity, and more Palestinian voices.

Rooted in tradition while moving the conversation forward. Because Palestinian embroidery isn’t nostalgia. It’s living culture.

And this next chapter is just getting started.

Follow along as we step into a new season of Tatreez Talk. New conversations, new voices, and new stories stitched forward.

On Cultural Appropriation ⬇️

One of the biggest questions we get asked is whether or not someone can wear or practice tatreez in some shape or form, and ultimately, people are worried about whether or not they’ll be seen as culturally appropriating tatreez.

🎧 So we discussed it on this week’s episode of @tatreeztalk. Listen to our Tatreez Talk Mailbag episode to hear our full discussion on cultural appropriation and more.

How to Not Culturally Appropriate Tatreez:

🪡 Always acknowledge that the art you are participating in is Palestinian art.

🪡 Learn about the history of tatreez from Palestinians.

🪡 Reflect on WHY you want to practice or wear tatreez.

🪡 Do not profit off of tatreez if you are not Palestinian.

🪡 Support, promote, and amplify Palestinian Tatreez artists, creators, businesses, and educators.

🪡 Stand in solidarity, and vocally support Palestinian liberation. by @tatreeztalk

Meet Subhya (@svbhya). 🧵

Our next guest on Tatreez Talk is a Palestinian-Brazilian tatreez artist and grad student who teaches workshops all over Houston. She’s named after her Teta, who stitched birds and florals and gave her thobes to everyone she loved, including Subhya’s Brazilian grandmother.

Her episode drops Thursday. Swipe for a preview of what she shared, and follow along so you don’t miss it. 🎧

When Zaynab (@kanaancollective) moved to the DMV, she didn’t know anyone. After October 7th, she was stitching every day, and it was the only thing that felt like doing something. But she also wanted to sit with people who understood, in person.

So she posted on her personal Instagram: “Hey, we’re meeting here.”

30 people came.

That one post turned into stitching circles, and the circles turned into Kan’an Collective, a community built around everything she wanted and couldn’t find.

“I don’t want us to be stuck in the past, just repeating the same things we’ve done before. Once you learn tatreez, you make it your own, which is the whole point of tatreez. They stitched their lives into the fabric.”

That’s Zaynab, founder of @kanaancollective, and it’s the heart of our conversation with her.

What started as one friend meeting up to stitch turned into 30 people showing up, and then into Kan’an Collective, a community, a design practice, and a way of paying Palestinian women embroiderers what their work is actually worth.

In this week’s episode, we talk about building community from the ground up, designing modest, hijabi-friendly tatreez for everyday wear, and why underpaying embroiderers has to stop.

New episode of Tatreez Talk with Zaynab out this Thursday! Set a reminder and join us. by @tatreeztalk

Tatreez isn’t only women’s history.

Men helped with the embroidery and finished dresses. Some of the qasab (metal thread) work on old taqsirahs was done by men. Brides-to-be gifted their future husbands gifts, like embroidered handkerchiefs and tobacco purses, and some were repurposed as decorative pieces for riding a horse or camel.

And right now, men in Gaza are pulling old thobes out of the rubble to protect them, and protecting our history in the process.

Leilah has a lot more to share about being the temporary caretaker of Palestinian history. The full episode of Tatreez Talk goes live this Thursday. Listen on your favorite podcast streaming platform or watch on YouTube, link in bio.

Meet the duo behind Ashghal el-Teta (@ashghalelteta): Teta Zuhria, a tatreez enthusiast and crafts lover, and her daughter Suha, an interior architect and lover of all things handmade. Together, they’re creating tatreez-inspired artwork that bridges tradition and modern design.

Teta Zuhria’s love of tatreez started as a child in a small village near Hebron, nagging her own mother and grandmother to teach her the craft. Suha grew up watching her mother stitch, and eventually joined her — bringing an architect’s eye for space, color, and storytelling into their shared practice.

Their signature piece, Bab al-Dar, is a tatreez-embroidered door — and one of the most meaningful was a commission for their friend Dina, recreating the door from her family’s home in Gaza using old photos from a family celebration.

“Every piece that we create carries the story of our heritage.”

This episode is about what it means to build a craft across generations, and to turn memory into something you can hang on your wall.
