I have…some thoughts. Grateful for the experience, though. #culturecon #ootd by @tefftheory

CultureCon, I’m coming to see what the kids have been up to. šŸ˜‚āœØ

This is my first time attending, and I’m genuinely excited to step back into the creative ecosystem after nearly six years of being in a much quieter season of my life.

As a chronically ill [i loathe saying this, but have grown to accept this truth] Artist, that pause gave me a very different relationship to creativity, work, visibility, ambition, and what it means to actually participate in the cultural rhythm of things. Now I’m curious about what has shifted while I’ve been away, and equally curious about what feels …familiar.

So if you’re also attending for the first time, hi! šŸ‘‹šŸ¾ Come find me.

If you’re speaking, hosting, creating, organising, building something interesting, or simply moving through the weekend with your own particular magic, I’d love to connect!

And if you’ve been to @culturecon before and are returning this year, I’d especially LOVE to hear from you. If there’s someone you think I’d resonate with—artist, strategist, storyteller, cultural worker, founder, dreamer, general interesting human—introduce us. ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„

I’m coming with curiosity, an open mind, and a desire to get a fuller sense of where the creative space is now.

Basically: I’ve been in the chrysalis for a minute.
Now I’d like to see what the ecosystem is doing. šŸ¦‹āœØ

See you there. šŸ’« #nyc #culturecon #tefftheory by @tefftheory

People who find it difficult to archive their lives whilst also living it. I need to clear my drafts, but also this look was incredibly fun. #outfit by @tefftheory

I’ve been sitting with this analogy for a while, and finally made the time to articulate it. I don’t think I’ve arrived at the final language for what I’m trying to understand, but some thoughts need to be spoken before they can be fully understood.

Ok, so the connection I keep returning to: Kunta Kinte and the forced transformation of his identity into ā€œToby.ā€ I think of what the renaming represents: the attempt to sever a person from the identity, history, and meaning they carried with them—and to replace it with an identity that makes sense within the system that has subordinated them.

And I keep thinking about this when I encounter rhetoric insisting that Black Americans have no relationship to Africa whatsoever, that African ancestry is something to reject, or that the historical rupture produced by enslavement should itself become evidence of a completely separate origin.

I am not arguing that Black American identity is indistinguishable from African identity. It isn’t. Centuries of history in the Americas have produced remarkably distinct cultures, communities, political experiences, and identities that deserve to be understood on their own terms.

What I am questioning is something more complicated: What happens when the separation imposed by oppression becomes so deeply internalised that defending the separation begins to feel like defending the self? #tefftheory #history #cinema #diasporicdysmorphia by @tefftheory

Propaganda rarely feels like propaganda from the inside.

People like this reproduce narratives they inherited with such absolute conviction, often mistaking familiarity for truth and repetition for ā€œindependent thoughtā€. The language feels like their own because they have absorbed the framework SO deeply that they no longer recognise The Machinery that produced it. They don’t know where your programming ends, and where they begin This is why I believe critical consciousness requires more than just knowing facts. It requires interrogating: where our assumptions came from, who benefits from them, what histories they leave out, and what we have been taught to perceive as ā€œself-evidentā€.

No one is born a scammer. Behaviour exists within social, economic, and historical conditions. Understanding those conditions doesn’t excuse any individual wrongdoing, but it prevents us from turning a behaviour into an ethnic characteristic. #diasporicdysmorphia #deconstruction #fyp by @tefftheory

I am becoming incredibly difficult to archive.

Every time I unveil a version of myself, another has already surfaced beneath it.

Perhaps the self was never meant to be a portrait.

Perhaps it is an excavation site:
full of ruins, relics, false bottoms,
and things that have not yet learned their names. It is there that you will meet me— as deeply as I’ve met myself—again and again and again. #tefftheory by @tefftheory

What does it mean to be free
if that freedom isn’t extended to everyone?

I believe this is really about what gets carried forward in the name of sovereignty, and what goes unquestioned because it feels ā€œfamiliar.ā€

Really just setting context here more than conclusions, because I’ll be unpacking this more deeply soon.

And while we’re here: Kenya introducing paid, no-questions-asked menstrual leave? That’s something we can absolutely celebrate. #lgbtq #politics #colonization by @tefftheory

I wish the answer were this neat, but this kind of framing flattens a much more global system of extraction, dispossession, and underdevelopment.

Because, again: Reparations can’t sit in a single lane because the harm was never singular.

The Transatlantic Slave Trade, colonial extraction, and modern capitalism sit on a continuum of empire, producing different outcomes across Black Americans, African nations, and Caribbean societies within the same structure.

If we’re talking about repair, we have to name the whole architecture, not fragments of it. #diaspora #reparations #history #Ghana by @tefftheory

READ BEFORE LEAVING ANY COMMENTS: Show me an industry across Africa today that was built and is still thriving off the profits of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. I’ll wait.

And to be clear: this is not absolving participation; it’s contextualising it in a manner that is not consistent with the need to assign blame in this discourse. Some African actors WERE involved. That’s documented. But participation is NOT the same as designing, financing, and industrialising a global system.

Because if we’re serious about history, we have to be serious about who built what, and who extracted from where. Context matters. Context is clarity.

Correction: Ghana was renamed in 1957*** following its independence!

Long before digital platforms, movements organised through letters that were intercepted, phones that were tapped, borders that were closed, and bodies that were watched.

As Foucault reminds us, power doesn’t simply repress; it circulates, embeds itself in systems, and disciplines through visibility and surveillance.

Social media didn’t invent this dynamic. It digitised it. I have written previously [via @whatthemourningknows] on bow algorithms mirror pre-existing social hierarchies: who is seen, who is amplified, who is ignored, and who is punished for visibility. The architecture changed; the logic did not.

The mistake is romanticising withdrawal as resistance, or waiting for tools that are pure enough to deserve our engagement. History shows us that movements were built INSIDE compromised systems, not outside of them. By people who understood the risks and acted anyway.

The tools have always been imperfect; use them anyways. #tefftheory #tiktok #socialmedia by @tefftheory
