“There’s a word for what Nick and I did the first few years of tekFoundation that I love and recently remembered - to coddiwomple.

It means to travel confidently towards a yet unknown destination. Pretty accurate 😂

For a while we honestly weren’t sure where this was going, we just wanted to help charities with their tech. Eventually that caused issues and we needed a plan, but getting to share all of it and answering questions about the process felt cathartic and was sooo fun. Also first time being involved in @sparkfestivalau 🥳

The chat was facilitated by @pledge1percent Australia and was intended to be a raw discussion on what it’s like to get started on creating impact through your business - specifically @nicksheps_ deciding to leverage @tekfinder to launch @tekfoundation_ .

One thing we covered was wondering if the connection to a recruitment business came with risks/if we needed to separate things - over time I saw that Nick’s passion (OBSESSION) with recruitment was our strength. When I started he got me a LinkedIn recruiter licence, gave me an insanely detailed overview and trusted me to go for it.

Nick explained that recruitment doesn’t always have the best reputation, but recruiters have access to people. In our case, that meant access to tech talent who wanted to help, plus the networks to find the people we needed when they weren’t already in our orbit. The thing we were worried about became the reason it all worked.

Every single person I met last night genuinely cared about bringing more good into the world, and I feel incredibly privileged that we got to be part of it.

A few weeks ago, something extraordinary happened at @tekfoundation_ .

We received 22 new requests for tech volunteer support - all within just 24 hours! 🤯

To put that in perspective, that’s almost half as many charities as we’ve helped in the past two YEARS, all reaching out at once.

This surge came from being featured in an industry newsletter, but it showed us two things clearly: the demand for skilled tech help among smaller charities is huge, and our tiny team simply can’t keep up alone.

That’s why we’ve launched our first ever End of Year campaign.

The name? Fast Track Tech for Aussie Charities.

The goal? Kickstart fundraising so we can grow our team and capacity.

A huge congrats to Joni who has just completed her first paid recruitment assignment at tekFoundation.

Joni is an absolute trooper and has been doing a huge amount of work behind the scenes.

Primarily building tekFoundation itself but then recruiting for over 50 charities now free of charge and in turn, having a huge amount of impact to small charities tech teams across Australia.

Joni and I have been on a wild ride together. From the idea I had of offering free recruitment services to charities, to hiring Joni to help out 2 days a week, to what tekFoundation is now.

It’s been built on a mix of 7 minute voice notes between 10pm and midnight, as well as just pushing each other on when we felt like throwing the towel in.

Running a social enterprise as well as a recruitment agency is tough. They are polar-opposites in terms of how they operate and the staff are motivated by different things.

Joni and I though are confident that theres longevity in our mission; that social impact & for-profit can co-exist.

Thank you Stewart & Heath for sharing how tekFoundation’s made a positive impact on @creativebytesnfp ! 🙌🏼

Over the last year we’ve been thrilled to be partnered with @creativebytesnfp - supporting them in amplifying their impact by making several strategic tech volunteer matches.

Creative Bytes’s mission is to provide high quality STEM education to students in remote and regional Australia who need it the most. tekFoundation was able to support them on this mission by connecting them with multiple talented Learning Development Managers that volunteered to help expand the coding curriculums used in Creative Byte’s programs for young learners.

Sharing the impact @tekfoundation_ services have on the charities we support and the communities they serve is instrumental in communicating what we do and why we’re here. @tekfinder started the @tekfoundation_ with a vision to level the playing field so charities have an equal opportunity to succeed, and feedback like this tells us we’re on the right track! 💚🩷 by @tekfinder

Over a year ago we set a goal to have @tekfoundation_ registered as an official charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission - as of this week we are so proud to have achieved that goal!!

This would not have been possible without the support, connections and expertise of the individuals that helped us get there; thank you to Simone Murad and @businessdepot , Mike Gore and Jocelyn Goto from @charitabl.app , Keith Rovers, Nashita Khan, Lilit M., and Lucy Greenwood from @minterellison , and the tekFoundation board Lucy Timms, Dr Robert Winter, and Aidan Beanland.

We did it! @tekfinder has officially joined the Pledge 1% Movement!

@pledge1percent is a global movement of over 18,000 members that inspires, educates, and empowers companies to be a force for good.

By becoming a Pledge 1% member, it not only formalises our commitment to social responsibility through funding the launch of @tekfoundation_ but also joins a global community of change-makers dedicated to giving back.

Since its inception, tekFoundation has successfully assisted 25 different charities across Australia in finding volunteers for various tech initiatives.

Future plans include mentorship programs to upskill charities, assisting students and recent grads to grow professionally; and to support those skilled in tech but facing barriers to entering the job market.

Head of tekFoundation, Joni had a great time at @sxswsydney ✨ Check out her debrief!👇🏼

Wow what a week at SXSW Sydney 🤩

I didn’t take nearly enough pictures but got SO much out of this on both a personal and professional level.

Highlights included:
🧡 Meeting the incredible team from @charitabl.app who sponsored my badge as a member of the 2024 Fundraise for Australia cohort, thank you so much Mike Gore and to Ryan Ginard for the connection! 🙏 If you’re a charity or someone that wants a super easy way to make and track your annual giving I definitely recommend downloading the Charitabl. app (ios or android).

🩷 The most inspiring talks for me were on those encouraging taking big risks, being creative, and being kind. Additionally a quite impactful and practical talk by Renee Kirkman was a great reminder that while technology is a powerful and useful tool, we need to keep in touch with the amazing and intuitive hardware and software built into our own bodies - expressions like “trust your gut” exist for a reason…make sure you’re giving yourself space to rest & listen to your inner wisdom or you’ll burn out/end up somewhere you didn’t intend to go ✨

💚 Learned about some of the struggles and plans bigger tech companies have for encouraging their staff to give back (time, money, skills etc). The divide between the tech world and the charities that need support from that world is a known challenge that we should be collectively looking to address. I know that Nick and the board and myself really want tekFoundation and tekFinder to be playing a part in finding a solution to bridge that gap and we can’t wait to keep chipping away at this!

🤗 Ran into a few friendly faces like Rebecca McCash from @futuretechaustralia and Maxx Silver from @secouncilnswact which is always a bright spot wandering through a crowd of strangers for several days!

(2) House of Welcome Catering creates jobs and training opportunities for people seeking asylum & refugees through their social enterprise.

(3) @centre360_ offers vital mental health counselling & programs for at-risk youth in Sydney’s East and Southeastern Suburbs
