Late to the show, but this sign likes to take their time. Introducing the 6th to my Zodiac Series: CANCER ♋️

For this shoot, I wanted to represent this house with the idea that
You don't get to see the pearls before seeing the shell first.

Cancers have a dramatic and dreamy energy to them that is reflected out from their internal world. Like their zodiac symbol, the crab, Cancers are not one to step outside of their protective shell too often, whether that be physically or mentally. But even so, if put in any environment, they will find their way to adapt and thrive. Depending on how thick their shell has grown, the sign craves security and safety— not only for themselves but for the ones they keep around them, in whatever way that might mean. With this, Cancers are one of the most caring souls for those that matter; yielding and soft, though a hard exterior.

As a house, ruled by the element water and the moon, Cancer asks us to be in-tune with our inner selves and to be willing to stand in the waves of our emotions in whatever form they come. To allow calm waters and fluidity within yourself without having to sacrifice your exterior, or your value.

Thank you team!

Inferno: The Illuminated

This experimentation is the first part of a three piece set that anchors on my interpretation for Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. The other two parts being “Puragtorio” and “Paradiso.”

Inferno explores the understanding that the soul bears the burdens of its decisions. You are not punished by god but by an eternal mirror of your choices. The Illuminated (Hermit) card represents a journey inwards, a search for truth in the darkness. Dante’s passage through the circles of hell is not just to experience extrinsic torment, but to introspectively confront his fears and shortcomings. For the logistics of the project, I incorporated colors of red and blue, seeing if I could balance drastic contrast of the colors yet a visual synastry between them. The model will be hugging themselves and shirtless, a representation of vulnerability in the darkness/ contrasting colors.

Paradiso is supposed to feel like you can finally rest, that you’ve finally found repose. But what if the imagery in Inferno looks a lot more (sickeningly) comforting? I wanted to explore way people find comfort in their vices, and that it’s harder to do the work to enlighten yourself, or level up. In Purgatorio, it feels like you can stand in your power. But only because it’s familiar to you — where you are isn’t anywhere new. You stay because it’s not challenging. You stay to calm your ease yet the emptiness is unsettling, and the silence you’ve blocked your intuition to achieve becomes a jarring crescendo. Your desire for your comfort has become a hell of your making. Stay, if you’d like. It’s your choice after all. But don’t let it dull you. Where does your true power lie?

The Way, the Truth, the Light

A solo exhibition by Khalil McFarlane @khalilmcf

CLOSING:
THIS FRIDAY, September 11th | 5-8 PM
225 Holliday Street
Baltimore, MD | 21202
The Peale Museum

The words of our artist Khalil,

“In a world that seeks to destroy Black bodies, our children hold onto a light that refuses to be extinguished. Through their existence, they reaffirm our belief in a future sustained by a collective continued perseverance.

The Way, the Truth, and the Light examines the intergenerational experiences shaping Black youthhood. Through memory, imagination, and shared history, this body of work reflects the ways Black children inherit resilience, culture, joy, and possibility.
“the Way” speaks to the paths forged by previous generations,
“the Truth” to the lived realities that continue to shape identity, and “the Light” to the everlasting Black spirit that exists within every Black child. Together, these works affirm that Black youth are not only products of this configured reality, but the cultivators of the future.”

COME BE PRESENT IN THE SPACE ‼️‼️

Individualized Track: Creative Enterprise & Socio Cultural Leadership, B.A.

Last year, I graduated with and designed my own independent degree that focuses on the importance (and contribution) of arts, or rather creativity, within our communal infrastructures for sustainable participatory decision making.

I took on this track out of both passion and spite.

The year I began designing, the only question ringing through my head was * How could we be brave enough to imagine a world we’ve never existed in?* because our current structures act as if you and I are not allowed to integrate all aspects of ourselves to survive, or to even dream of a good future.

I’ve witnessed how corruption manifests here in America, in the belly of the beast, and across the other side of the world as well. But our creativity exists in tandem with our decision making, and therefore how we contribute to our communities.

With this line of work, especially since graduating, it’s only felt like I’ve been thrown in the lion’s den. But that’s what I was anticipating anyways.

I’ve had the honor of having Baltimore as my second home- and this city as a creative capital has been so exemplary of sustainable alternatives. But I know we can drive it further- without none of us ever needing a seat at the white man’s table.

***

I’d like to sincerely thank my INDS family (@inds_umbc , @hollycudzilo @_marqmywords ) for championing me in my ambitions and keeping me alive in undergrad lol, my hardworking kickass team at The Interlude (@theinterludegallery ), support from Director Uchill at CADVC (@cadvc_umbc ), and for my role models that have made monumental contributions to this cultural work that has already existed before me (@nia_k_evans , @tomashi_ashi , @ainsleyburrowsmighty , @tastemynoel )

And for my dear friend Ian @ic.exposure for these amazing photos!!
