We thought we’d find one universal “cold plunge brain.”

But we found the opposite.

Some of the brains shifted toward slower activity - calm, inward, downregulated.

The others shifted toward faster activity - alert, focused, task-ready.

And across the cohort, those shifts resulted in greater hemispheric symmetry - a more balanced distribution of activity between the two sides of the brain.

Humans have been using nature-based regulation for thousands of years.

A 3-minute plunge is a controlled stressor, challenging the nervous system to adapt in the direction it needs.

What’s fascinating is that reorganization seems entirely dependent on the individual’s starting state.

Perhaps part of the reason why research has produced such variable results is because relatively little work has looked at the brain’s immediate response.

If you’re an avid plunger - or thinking about starting - consider: When are you plunging, what state are you starting in, and what do you want from it: activation and focus, or calm and recovery?

Maybe the “best” way to plunge depends less on a universal protocol and more on where your system is - and where you want it to go.

Thank you to @thechillpod.co & @krisricewellness for partnering with us to push the science forward 🧊 🧠

Experience ChillPod at Street of Dreams.

For the first time, ChillPod is on display inside the ICON home at the 50th Anniversary Street of Dreams.

More than a cold plunge, this space reflects something we’ve believed from the beginning:
Wellness belongs at home.

If you’re visiting Street of Dreams, we’d love for you to stop by, experience ChillPod, and see what we’ve been building.

Tag @thechillpod.co if you visit—we’d love to see the experience through your eyes. taken in Oregon City, Oregon by @thechillpod.co

You’ve seen ChillPod.

But have you ever actually seen ChillPod?

Experienced the scale, the curves, the details.

For almost two years, very few people have.

That’s about to change.

Where do you think we’re headed? by @thechillpod.co

What actually happens in your brain during a cold plunge?

It’s a question I’ve wondered for years.

People often describe feeling calmer, clearer, more focused, or more energized after cold immersion. But until recently, we’ve mostly relied on personal experience to explain why.

This summer, we’re beginning to explore that question through brain mapping.

If you’re unfamiliar with it, brain mapping measures patterns of brain activity. It helps us better understand how different areas of the brain communicate and respond under different conditions.

We’ve already completed our first two brain maps and the results were fascinating.

This is just the beginning.

Over the coming months, we’ll share what we’re learning, why it matters, and how this research is helping shape the future of @thechillpod.co

Because we believe the future of wellness isn’t choosing between lived experience and science.

It’s making room for both. taken in Portland, Oregon by @thechillpod.co

Cold water doesn’t replace meditation. It creates the conditions where meditation actually works.

After a cold plunge, when your body has been recalibrated and the fog has cleared, sitting quietly becomes something entirely different. The mind that was a storm ten minutes ago is now just a windy day. Manageable. Observable.

Use cold to interrupt the acute stress. Use the stillness that follows to go deeper. Both practices are teaching you the same thing through different doors: that you have more agency over your internal state than you realize. by @thechillpod.co

There’s a reason you step out of cold water feeling like a completely different person.

Your vagus nerve is the primary pathway of your parasympathetic nervous system, the part responsible for rest, recovery, and calm.

Cold water activates it powerfully and immediately.

At the same time, norepinephrine, the neurotransmitter responsible for focus and mood elevation, surges by up to 300% during cold exposure. Not the jittery kind. The clear, steady, I-can-actually-think kind.

This is the science behind why you step out of a cold plunge feeling like a different person. Your body isn’t imagining it. Your brain chemistry has genuinely shifted.

One to three minutes. That’s all it takes to access your own biology. by @thechillpod.co

If you've ever sat down to meditate in the middle of a hard day and walked away feeling worse, you're not doing it wrong.

Meditation is a long game. It builds resilience, rewires reactivity, and teaches you to observe your thoughts with compassion. It's one of the most valuable practices we know of.

But it works best when you're not already at your limit. When acute stress hits, your brain's rational center dims and its alarm center takes over. You cannot think your way through that. No amount of focus or breathing cues will override a nervous system that has already decided it's in crisis.

That's not a personal failing. That's just biology. And it's exactly what cold water was made for. by @thechillpod.co

Here's something wellness culture doesn't talk about enough: you don't have to suffer through your healing.

We've been taught to valorize the hard path. The grueling meditation sit. The brutal workout. The white-knuckling through discomfort. As if the difficulty is what makes it worthy.

But there's real wisdom in choosing what actually works for your body in the moment you're in. Cold immersion isn't easy, but it's immediate. It meets you exactly where you are, no prior practice required, no sitting with discomfort hoping calm eventually arrives.

Choosing relief isn't weakness. Sometimes it's the most intelligent thing you can do. taken in Lake Oswego, Oregon by @thechillpod.co

Most wellness practices make you better at doing. Cold water teaches you how to just be.

You can't optimize your way through cold water. You can't multitask. You can't push through it with sheer willpower.

You can only breathe. Be present. Feel.

That's exactly why we built ChillPod around cold immersion, not as a biohack or a performance tool, but as a ritual of presence. A few minutes each day that belong entirely to you, with no output required.

In a world that measures your worth by your productivity, choosing to simply *feel something* is quietly radical. taken in Pacific North West by @thechillpod.co

What if you gave yourself five minutes today that had absolutely no purpose other than presence?

Not to recover faster. Not to perform better tomorrow. Not to optimize anything.

Just five minutes that belong to your body and nothing else.

That's where it starts: not with a complete life overhaul, but with one small act of reclaiming time that isn't about production. Cold immersion, a walk without your phone, ten minutes of genuine stillness. The practice matters less than the intention behind it.

You're not broken. You don't need to be fixed. You need systems, even tiny ones, that are actually built for human beings.

That's what we're building here. 💙 taken in Lake Oswego, Oregon by @thechillpod.co
