Woodhall Spa (Hocthkin)

12 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Set out over relatively flat land the bunkering, greens and heather make this course dramatic.

This course makes you think, gives you options and at other times forces a certain shot.

From the back tee's the Hocthkin is the hardest course in England which made me nervous but from the yellows with my game in Bad shape I was still able to enjoy the course even visiting most of its 143 bunkers.

It is hard for me to chose standout hole's but thats due to the strength of them all.

One of England's finest inland course's, the home of England Golf and in many rankings a world top 100 course....... this will be the first of many visits.

Beau Desert

Been looking forward to this one for a while, ranked 49 in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 honestly this is one of the courses that made me want to get out there playing the top 100.

I have seen so many videos of this place, I thought I had a good idea of how the course looked but it just simply doesn't do it justice (Same goes for my 📸). Honestly the elevation changes, the undulating greens and the run off area's around them are hard to capture but walking this place it just feels special.

Huge greens, surrounded by bunkers, run off areas , heather and holes that make you think.

From the tee there are multiple holes that look narrow and almost short in length due to how narrow it looks but once you make it to the fairway (or rough in my case 😂) the hole looks completely different while other holes are wide and inviting.

For me the stretch of holes 6-9 were my favourite but theres something about that approach shout into 18 with the clubhouse just behind.

A truly stunning English heathland

Amazing welcome and an amazing course, this will definitely be the first of many trips to @beau.desertgolfclub

Ganton

7 in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 72 in 🌎

Former Ryder Cup venue and also hosted both the Walker & Curtis Cup.

This inland links course in North Yorkshire sits on land that was previously an inlet for the North sea. Now the sandy soil means firm and fast fairways paired with reveted bunkers, gorse, undulating greens and sandscrapes makes you feel like your at a true links course.

Every hole gives you options and makes you think. Forced carry's over sand from the tee and deep bunkers mean you need to be on your game.

There is a good mix of both longer and short holes such as 280 yard par 4 but a 219 yard par 3 (both from the yellows and by the way who needs a 219 yard par 3 🤣 )

In terms of architect..... take your pick 😆

Harry Vardon,James Braid,J. H. Taylor,Harry Colt,Alister MacKenzie,Tom Simpson.

This place is special, the drive in, the history the bunkers the sand the sleepers.

I paid £120 for a twilight round at this world top 100 course and while I may not of had the typical golden hour weather I loved this place.

A Return trip to Goswick and a chance to play the new 7th.

Stunning short par 3 that I will do a separate post for.

Crazy wind, terrible golf but a nice walk.

Last time was rain, this time wind, third time a charm?.

Their busy with new practice area and more changes to the course to follow with the help of Mackenzie & Ebert unsure about the tree removal between the 1st and 18th at the moment.

Anyone heading to east coast of Scotland for a golf trip and not playing Goswick either on the way there or back are seriously missing out.

Appleby Golf Club.

I have been wanting to visit Appleby for a long time after hearing great things for a while. recently entering official top 100 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 ranking at 94 and the budget friendly green fee made me finally bite the bullet and book.

This course is great, links style reveted pot bunkers in the hills of Cumbria, blind shots, sheep grazing, dry stone walls and obviously the views all add to the character of this course.

Its a par 68 and currently has no par 5's. I loved the 4th which is a downhill short par 3 with amazing views but the 15th stole the show and now is really in the running for the best par 3 I have played (9th at St annes old links and the 13th at Hollinwell make it a hard choice though) but a bilnd shot over a river & a rivene to a sunken "bathtub" green with another reveted bunker is simply stunning 😍 hole.

This course is one of the most fun I have played and while its 94 in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 it really is a must visit in my opinion.

I paid £65 for a weekend morning tee time and I think you struggle to find something as good for this money in the north of England.

@applebygolf 👏 👏 👏

Perranporth

I have had this one booked for a while as we planned a family trip to Cornwall. Knowing I only had time to play one course while here it was no easy choice but I am so glad I chose @perranporthgolfclub

This James Braid master piece sits above the town of Perranporth and even though you can see the town from many of the holes (tends to be the greens) the course feels otherworldly.

The land it sits on, the elevation changes, blind shots, the dunes and the fact it was burnt out all added to this.

Talking blind shots....theres alot of them (7 I think) and once you can finally see the approuch and the green wow.

One of the things I enjoy about playing golf and visit new course is these moments when you can see a hole for the first time and have those wow moments and honestly Perranporth has more of them then anywhere else I have played so far.

This course was a challenge, good luck finding a flat lie and I think I was lucky it was baked out so I could spot the ball easily following the blind shoots from the tee. Some greens, seriously undulating and steep, steep run offs essentially hills, add in how firm it was and now its difficult to gauge distance and hold the greens but it did mean you could utilise the ground game, be creative and run the ball up.

Again hard to say stand out holes due to the strength of so many. Before my visit I seen photos of greens here, over looking the town and beach and honestly didnt realise this wasnt just the same one or two greens but no its alot of them.

So dramatic, so much fun, so many wow moments and now my favourite links course.

I may be an 8 hour drive but I will visit Cornwall and Perranporth again.

I paid £100 for my green fee and honestly I think it was worth every penny.

Hollinwell

The first top 100 course I played and where my love of heathland golf started.

Ranked 18 in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 the course blew me away.

Even from the drive in this place felt special.

Playing in October, in the UK's first storm of that winter and chasing daylight still wasn't enough to stop me smiling but did make capturing photos challenging.

The first hole lulled me in but once I seen the approuch on the second and that green I was hooked. I had read so much about the stretch on the back 9 but couldn't believe I hadn't seen more about the second.

Then once I made it to the 11th I realised this was now my favourite hole in golf and even though I had only played 11 holes, this place was now my favourite course.

I had played course's with beautiful and dramatic holes but never like this and certainly not an inland course.

Once I made it to the 13th tee I knew that this would be a place I would visit many times and I was now baffled as to weather this had taken over as my favourite hole.

I left Hollinwell happy about my choice, confused in terms of rankings and worried about how I would view "normal" courses.

The history, the well, the land that drive in ......wow.

Seaton Carew Golf Club ⛳️

📍 Location: Hartlepool, England

🏌️ Layout & Design:

The are 22 holes at Seaton Carew but in Winter you play the old course designed by Dr Alistar Mckezie.

🌱 Condition:
The fairways and greens were so firm for winter it was simply unbelievable and the bunkers are stunning.

📖 History: Originally built in 1874 and named Durham and Yorkshire Club it was a 14 hole layout until 1891 when the course was extended and renamed Seaton Carew.

In 1925 Dr Alistar MacKenzie modified the layout, 10 years later he designed Augusta National.

💷 Cost/Value:
£35 for a Sunday afternoon at a top 100 course (£60 if you chose an earlier tee time).

✅ Overall Verdict:
Obviously a great course given its ranking but it doesn't have huge dunes and massive elaveted tee boxes like some other links courses or amazing views over the sea but it has its own character or charm that made me love this course. I thought originally that the industry backdrop would spoil the course but I was wrong it only adds to its individualtly.

It dosnt feel like its on a huge peice of land and you steep off most greens straight on to the next tee. The land dosnt have huge elevation changes but where this does change is around the green sites and on the par 3 holes which makes the course fun and challenging.

Honestly I don't think you will a better deal at a better course in winter and I feel lucky to live so close.

Now my favourite links course.

Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club ⛳️

Northumberland, England

99 in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I first seen Dunstanburgh from a Rick Shiels video a few years ago. Loved the look of the course and the fact it was a bargain for £40. I booked the course and played it in crazy wind which I thought was fitting as this was actually the first time I had played links golf.

Anyway.... I really wanted to go back and take the course in properly as isn't to far from me.

The course wasn't in the official top 100 England list at the time. but often featured in others and people who have played the best course's that England has to offer seemed to always rate Dunstanburgh highly. Shortly after I played it the official top 100 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 list was updated and Dunstanburgh was add in at 99.

Another thing that made me want to go back was the condition of the course. What I mean by this is how dry the course is, most of the bunkers in play and no temporary greens to be seen, aswell as hitting off actual grass. After a winter of hitting off mats this was very welcome.

For once I actually got lucky with the weather, the fairways were dry and the ball was actually rolling (which was needed given how I played).

Designed by James Braid the course plays through dunes right by the sea and the par 3 thirteenth sits in the shadow of the ruins of Dunstanburgh castle.

£40 for a Saturday afternoon tee time is great value and I think if your making the trip to Northumberland to play Goswick then you need to add Dunstanburgh on to your trip while your so close.

Goswick's Par 3's

I love short par 3's and after playing Goswick for the second time (and playing the new par 3 7th) it got me thinking. Does Goswick have the best group of short par 3's?.

(From yellows)

2nd 152 yards while not much to look at as some of the green is hidden behind a dune you have the North Sea just to the right and a ravine to carry. Once over you have interesting green with run off areas to contend with.

7th Mackenzie & Ebert new edition to Goswick and 106 yards from the tee, bunkers short right, run off short left and that fescue long. In my opinion the best par 3 at Goswick.

13th a pretty straightforward par 3 or at least it looks that way from the tee. Its 154 yards but its defence comes from the fact it is surrounded but bunkers. The 4 ball infront of me all landed in a separate bunker and I am sure there was still a few spare.

15th a raised tee box looking down on what looks like a nice green with plenty of bunkers and framed by fescue, its not until you get to the green you release just how undulating it is and how the run off areas lead straight to before mentioned bunkers.

Goswick's new 7th.

Who's played the new par 3 7th at Goswick?

Whats your thoughts???

I personally love it 106 from the yellows, the run off, the bunkers, the green its self and the fescue long 👌.
