In this 2 day, one-off workshop held in Lyon, Oöm will fold you into the inner workings of our shared brains and we will go on a journey together. MY obsession - finding ways for the body to support a voice that is free and true. Then jumping into the unknown to see what this voice-body-mind that is me might have to express. Turning that mystery into song. This was the first time I did a fully improvised solo performance in front of a public audience. (Although of course I’ve done countless in front of others in workshops, retreats and educational settings…). I wanted to challenge myself to lean into the music, to see what I could build and hint at and spark in the imagination using only my voice. And how to own that process as just one body, but also to invite the audience in to be my collaborators, my band. As you can see, improvisation promises to take you on a ride. Where you end up - and the way you got there - can be so different than how you started! I’m proud of myself for taking the plunge. The whole performance lasted about 8mins which I’ve cut down to 3 here ;) A bit thanks to Ben @body.rhythm.hamburg for booking me this May! As an artist and teacher, I think it’s our job to continuously study and push ourselves and take risks, to explore our art form to the edges, so than we can bring our harvests back to our students. The Embodied Voice - voice, movement and improvisation 🤩 I’ve had a really busy summer of teaching, performing and travel. Here is a little video gathering clips from a few of those adventures - there are many more that I will share over the coming weeks. And announcing some exciting retreats and deep dives for 2025! But first up - Lisbon! Wednesdays 19h-21h (2hrs) October 30 Nov 6, 13, 20, 27 @__piscina__ @espacodapenhalx A Piscina @Espaço da penha Tv. do Calado 26B, 1170-070 Lisboa, These sessions are my special playground, where I invite you to come explore with me as I take us into the deep and magical world of voice, movement and improvisation. The first half of the session may feel a bit like a yoga class, mixed with a Feldenkrais session, mixed with conscious dance, all integrated with sounding and singing, leading to a body and voice that feels soft, open and connected. In the second half we play a myriad of games and forms for unlocking our creative voice and honing our musical skills, including creating melodies, understanding musical forms, improving rhythmic vocabulary and precision, exploring invented language or words, and more. In the process, we also learn to develop inter-personal connections, engage in deep listening, and explore our habits and roles within a collaborative context. It is with great excitement and anticipation that I announce my newest offering for 2026: The Embodied Voice Practitioner Training October 24 - November 1, 2026 in Sintra Portugal https://theembodiedvoice.net/offerings/evpractitionertraining Since I began this work, I knew I was making something new, something that I hadn’t found in the world yet, but that needed to exist. I’m a consummate searcher for connections, a seeker of what makes things tick, a questioner of dogma and rules. But why? But how? Gratefully, I had an amazing space and community that provided me the space, training, and support to pursue my questions, to study from a wide range of teachers and sources. I began experimenting in the studio, learning by doing, and over the years I’ve never really stopped (nor do I intend to). What has emerged is The Embodied Voice, a research, teaching, performance, and creative practice that increasingly is about drawing on all manner of resources and inspirations to question what it means to live well as a body amongst bodies, on this body, the earth. From the start, I have resisted pressure to codify the practice, to turn it into something. Probably due to my feelings of inadequacy - I don’t know everything yet! - and also resistance to the capitalist insistence on turning something alive and free into a brand with hard edges and a protective mindset. However, I’ve now come to appreciate the years of embodied knowledge that I have which go into my decisions on how to hold space, how to shape a session, how to welcome people in, how to encourage them to let go, how to get them to experience the magical wisdom of their own bodies. What we learn in each moment of play is and will be infinite, and I can’t/won’t pretend to have all the answers. But I can share my framework. So that’s what I’ll be doing next year! For a cosy cohort of 10 people, I will open the door on the “backstage” of The Embodied Voice! What is The Embodied Voice? Good question 🤩 I’ve made a film to help explain! Over a year ago, I started working with filmmaker Mário Negrão to help me capture and explain this practice that invigorates and informs so much of my life. I’m proud to say we are finally ready to share it. This video above is just a trailer for a 20 minute long documentary, complete with an original soundtrack of music composed by yours truly. And that’s a wrap. It’s official, we have pulled off another Other Lands Other Sounds! And what a fantastic experience it was - the energy in this group was off the charts. From day one’s cross-arts jam, we knew we were on fire, and from then on, we couldn’t be stopped. 18 artists from 9 different countries came together over 12 days hosted by The Court of Cavalum and we dove headfirst into collaborative creation. From art-making treasure hunts, morning movement, exploratory walks, happenings, cross-arts jams, a cynotype workshop, secret puzzles, pizza night, poetry, theatre, mobiles, flower pressing, promenades, aqua-speakers, projection, and soooo much sangria - it’s amazing how much can happen in 12 days. I’d have to say the most amazing thing, though, and what keeps me coming back to this project despite the craziness of being a sort of guerilla, self-funded project (don’t get me started on that), is the deep impact that is wrought on all of us as humans and as artists. Every person comes out the other side changed. Changed by the spaces held, by our colleagues, by the risks taken, the discoveries made. It reaffirms for me, every time, that another way is possible. With so much love and gratitude to everyone who was a part of this unforgettable time. You are amazing. Till next year!
