Monday, November 16th:
Las Madres de Berks Documentary Screening and Panel

Join us on Monday, November 16th in Graham Auditorium for a screening of Las Madres de Berks followed by a panel discussion featuring Artist Michelle Angela Ortiz and immigrant rights organizers @palovesimmigrants @freemigrationproject

Ortiz created the Las Madres de Berks documentary, which shares the testimonials of four mothers who were detained for two years with their children at The Berks County Residential Center, a family prison in Pennsylvania. Berks is the oldest of the three permanent family prisons for immigrant families in the country. Despite being held up as a “model” by proponents of immigrant detention, the center has amassed a record of human rights violations.

All events are free and open to the public.

Here is some helpful information to plan your visit to see “STORIES OF US” @thegalleriesatmoore

Bringing together public projects and studio works that span Michelle Angela Ortiz’s 25-year career for the first time, Michelle Angela Ortiz ‘00: STORIES OF US explores how the artist’s pioneering collaborative approach centers stories of family, immigration, and community as powerful tools of visibility and resistance.

Ortiz’s work in Philadelphia and around the world reveals how individual narratives and collective experience become inextricable from one another in the pursuit of freedom, dignity, and belonging in the face of oppression. From intimate works reflecting on her familial heritage to publicly sited largescale interventions, Ortiz—a celebrated Moore alum—questions and reclaims whose stories are told, believed, and venerated. By doing so, she asks us to become active participants in the production of history through the lens of our own experiences.

This exhibition is curated by Erica F. Battle, BATTLE Projects, for The Galleries at Moore, Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia.

11:30–1:00
Via Zoom, link in bio

For students on campus come to the Board Room for a Watch Party.

Language Studies by e bond ‘96 is now on view in the Alumni Gallery. The exhibition features fabric collections and letterpress prints that zero in on (often overlooked) elements of typography. Both collections grew out of a residency at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum, where e printed directly from the museum’s wood type collection by @thegalleriesatmoore

Maya Pindyck (Associate Professor of Humanities and Creative Writing here at Moore) recently took her Poetry class down to The Galleries for a tour of Michelle Angela Ortiz: STORIES OF US. Students explored the exhibition and wrote ekphrastic descriptive poems in response to works on display. Enjoy a selection of works written by student writers. You can read the remaining poems by visiting The Galleries and flipping through the book on our welcome desk!

Flores de Libertad

2017

Over 1,600 hand-dyed paper flowers, wire, wood frames, fabric netting, and Polytab mural cloth Produced as part of Familias Separadas. Phase One, Philadelphia

As part of her multi-phase project Familias Separadas, Ortiz led a creative action against family detention for which over 100 volunteers-educators, creatives, students, and families-contributed making more than a thousand traditional paper flowers for over two months at the Monument Lab Research Field Office at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia in 2017. Looking closely, words can be seen written on many of their paper petals which derived from the writings from the mothers at Berks County Residential Center (see the archival material in this gallery) or the volunteers contributing their own rallying messages in solidarity. Ortiz then staged an installation of this work on the sidewalk in front of City Hall.

Still flying high with all the love and light from everyone that attended my opening reception @thegalleriesatmoore last night.

Thanks to the amazing @erica.battle.projects for helping me piece my artworks together that span my 25 plus years working as an artist and building with community.

@moorecollegeart is a part of my formative years. I attended the Young Artist Workshop as a teenager and then as an undergrad creating my artistic path. I am grateful to the Moore community for opening this space for my work to be seen and valued.

My former Moore professors and friends, Tendai Johnson @tendai_johnson and Maryanne Krutsick celebrated with me. As a first gen college student they understood my immigrant and cultural experience. They saw and believed in my potential.

Cultural leaders, @janegoldenmuralarts @johnnyirizarryal @bethfeldmanbrandt Carmen Febo @marangelimr @melishhhhhhh @bernsgrrl @tiffanytavarez and so many more showed up last night. I have learned so much from them as leaders that continue to support artists in our city.

So great to see many collaborators and artists last night too! @julialopez1 @madeleine.s.smith @jmaz79 @derek_james_weston @rjrushmore

Thanks to @elrompecorazones_oficial from bringing a piece of Colombia to us with their music, and @casamexicophilly and my mother’s empanadas for the delicious food too.

I felt all the love from my people, and for that I am deeply grateful.

Los amo!
