The first Magic Castles album from Minneapolis songwriter Jason Edmonds in nearly five years, ‘Realized’ is a set of lush psych-rock reveries blending late-60s folk-rock warmth with shoegaze shimmer. Equal parts hazy nostalgia and widescreen modern psychedelia, the album consists of nine dreamlike, melody-led trips that unfold in waves – centring dreamy, heavily-layered arrangements, floating vocal harmonies and a cast of vintage guitars, amps and organs coating everything in that sweet analogue warmth.

Together with the rest of the current Magic Castles line-up (Adam Patterson on drums, Izaak Drew on guitar and Kristof Marden on bass), ‘Realized’ was recorded with Nick Tveitbakk at the legendary Pachyderm Studios deep in the woods in Minnesota, with additional recording by Edmonds at his own studio, the Map Room, and in Neil Weir’s remote chapel-converted-to-studio, Blue Bell Knoll, where Edmonds and Weir would co-mix the end result.

‘Realized’ is available now on limited edition 180g ‘starburst’ vinyl (previously sold out but a handful of extra copies released!) as well as neon orange vinyl. The limited edition variant is hand-numbered /350 and exclusive to the Fuzz Club UK/EU store and Membership! by @themagiccastles

🎧[L'ALBUM DU JOUR]🎧
Avec Realized, Magic Castles inaugure sa collaboration avec Fuzz Club, sans rompre avec le travail mené par Jason Edmonds depuis les débuts du projet à Minneapolis en 2006.
Repéré très tôt par Anton Newcombe, le groupe publiera quatre albums entre 2012 et 2022 sur son label A Recordings Ltd, dont Sun Reign en 2021 qui lui offrira une belle visibilité grâce à la synchro de l’un de ses titres dans la série HBO Succession.
Après une tournée européenne en tête d’affiche en 2023, Edmonds retourne à Minneapolis et reprend patiemment le travail, assemblant les morceaux qui formeront Realized.
Il évoque un album plus ouvert, pensé avec une approche plus directe, mais toujours ancré dans un son analogique construit autour d’amplis, guitares et orgues transistors vintage.
L’essentiel des sessions a été enregistré avec l’ingénieur Nick Tveitbakk au Pachyderm Studios, un lieu emblématique du Minnesota. Edmonds a ensuite poursuivi dans son propre studio, The Map Room, avant de finaliser le mixage à Blue Bell Knoll, une ancienne chapelle transformée en studio par Neil Weir.
Cette combinaison de lieux -studio historique, home‑studio et espace isolé- donne au disque un son plus net, tout en conservant une patine artisanale. Les morceaux s’installent progressivement, accompagnés par des harmonies vocales flottantes et une écriture centrée sur la mélodie, avec des influences folk‑rock de la fin des 60’s, des éclats shoegaze et une dose règlementaire de psyché.
Realized s’inscrit ainsi dans la continuité de l’œuvre de Magic Castles tout en ouvrant un nouveau chapitre. Chaque titre, conçu dans un contexte distinct, conserve son autonomie et, le tour de passe-passe consistant à rendre le tout cohérent, fonctionne à merveille.

“This one was recorded at Pachyderm Studio (the legendary rural Minnesota studio where Nirvana recorded In Utero) with the Magic Castles band. It’s myself and Izaak on guitars, Kristof on bass and Adam drumming. It’s a catchy pop song with this dreamy push-and-pull energy. Tight and rocking, melodic and upbeat, but with a streak of melancholy running through it. Not quite shoegaze… but it lives in that atmosphere, with some call and response type backing vocals for fans of Television thrown in. The Mary Anne in question is someone maybe struggling with communication breakdowns and the weight of the world, but she’s strong, resourceful, and ultimately ready to kick ass.” by @themagiccastles
