If you've just lost your pet, this is for you.

Nobody prepares you for the first 72 hours. Not the shock. Not the quiet. Not the way your body reacts.

This guide was written to sit with you in those first days. To help you understand what you're feeling, what's normal, and what you can do when everything feels too much.

It covers:
* what grief actually feels like
* the physical impact of loss
* the decisions you don't need to rush
* simple ways to hold on to them

Comment 72 and I'll send you the free guide privately.

If this helped even a little, save it. Or send it to someone who needs it today.

You can know why the decision had to be made and still go back over it again and again.

Was it too soon?
Did I wait too long?
Did I miss something?
What if I had asked one more question?

And then there are all the other things your mind finds afterwards. The last day. The last appointment. Something you noticed weeks earlier. Something you wish you had done differently.

I wrote I Keep Thinking I Failed Them for that loop.

It’s a free 36-page pet loss guilt guide about the thoughts that keep returning after losing a pet, why your mind keeps going back, and small ways to interrupt the replay when it starts.

No exercises you have to complete in order. No expectation that reading it will suddenly make the guilt disappear.

Just somewhere useful to start when your mind will not leave what happened alone.

I Keep Thinking I Failed Them is free.

Get it through the link in my bio. đŸ€Ž

Whether you have been here from the beginning or just found us today, this is the right moment to tell you about Henry and Toby.
They were brothers, cocker spaniels, the heart of my home for thirteen years. Henry was the steady one. Toby was the soft one. In 2015 I lost them both within weeks, and the world went quiet in a way I did not know was possible.
I looked everywhere for something gentle. Something that did not rush me. Something for the love that suddenly had nowhere to go. I could not find it, so I started to write it.
The Pet Loss Studio is what came from that grief. The most important things will always be free: a letter for tonight, a 72-hour guide, the blog, a private memorial space. Pet loss should not require a budget.
For those who want to go deeper, there are books and guides for the specific shapes of grief: the guilt, the first year, the loss of a dog, the loss for men, the loss for children.
If you are here today because you are walking through pet loss, I am glad you found us. Henry and Toby would have loved you.
đŸ€
If this might help someone you know, send it to them. Word of mouth is how we reach the people in their hardest hours.

I’ve felt guilty admitting this before.

Losing my pets affected me more deeply than losing some people I loved.

And new research suggests that experience is far from unusual.

A 2026 study from Maynooth University looked at pet bereavement alongside human bereavement. Among people who had experienced both, 21% said losing their pet was the most distressing bereavement they had experienced.

There are reasons this can happen.

We choose our pets. There are so few conditions attached to being loved by them. They don’t care what we earn, what we weigh, whether we’re successful or what we got wrong that week. They simply know us.

And they are there. Morning and night. Weekends and Christmases. Through changes in jobs, homes, relationships and everything else that can happen over ten or fifteen years.

Then suddenly, they are missing from all the times and places where we expect them to be.

If you’re struggling, what helps doesn’t have to be complicated. Talk to someone who will actually listen. Keep the rituals that still comfort you. Build new routines where the old ones hurt. Let yourself be distracted sometimes without feeling guilty about it. And don’t compare the way you’re grieving with the way somebody else did.

If, years later, your grief is still affecting your ability to live your life, work, sleep or connect with other people, please consider speaking to a qualified grief professional.

This research mattered to me because I had felt this long before I knew there was research describing it.

It is one of the reasons The Pet Loss Studio exists.

Did losing your pet affect you more deeply than you expected? Tell me about them below. đŸ€Ž

When everyone else carries on, it can make you feel as though you should be carrying on too.

You go back to work. Answer messages. Make dinner. Do the things that still need doing.

Meanwhile, you are trying to understand how a life that included them every day is supposed to continue without them in it.

Please don’t use other people’s response to decide how much support you are allowed to need.

Find somewhere you can keep talking about them. Write down the thoughts that keep returning. Let yourself acknowledge the things you miss that might sound insignificant to somebody else. And don’t assume that because nobody has asked how you are today, you should be fine today.

This is one of the reasons I created The Healing Letter.

It’s a free weekly email from The Pet Loss Studio, written for the weeks after losing a pet, when the messages have slowed down but your grief hasn’t.

No fixing you. No timetable for moving on. Just something in your inbox that still remembers this matters.

They never needed to be told. You’d sit down, and their head would land on your knee in exactly the same spot, every time, as if it had been saved for them.

It had.

Years later you sit down somewhere ordinary, a bench, a kitchen chair, the end of the bed, and your hand still goes to where their head should be.

If your pet had a place on you that was only theirs, tell us where it was. And their name, if you’d like to say it here. đŸ€Ž

You can know they’re gone and still listen for their footsteps.

I still think there is a part of us that expects them to be where they always were. You walk into a room and look towards their favourite spot before you remember. You wake in the night and, for a second, everything is as it was.

It makes sense when you think about how much of a life you shared. They were there when you woke up, when you came home, when you were having a bad day and when absolutely nothing was happening at all.

Then one day they aren’t there, but all those little ways you expected them to be haven’t disappeared with them.

Maybe that is why I don’t like talking about the dogs I “had”.

I didn’t just have them.

I loved them.

And I still do.

If you feel like talking about yours tonight, tell me something about them you still love talking about. đŸ€

Knowing they’re gone doesn’t stop you looking for them.

You might be managing the day quite well until you pause at a doorway, waiting for them to catch up. Then you remember, and need a minute.

Nothing new has to happen for you to have a hard day. You’re still missing someone who used to be there for all of it.

Is there somewhere you find yourself looking for them? đŸ€Ž

I know what it is to get stuck on one detail.

For me, it was the things that seemed completely normal at the time. The things I only understood differently because I knew what happened afterwards.

That is what guilt can do after losing a pet. It takes what you know now and carries it back into a day when you didn’t know it yet.

And then the questions start.

Why didn’t I notice?
Why did I wait?
Why did I make that decision?
Why didn’t I do something differently?

I made the Pet Loss Guilt & Grief Workbook because I needed something more useful than being told not to blame myself.

Sometimes there is nothing to forgive. Sometimes there is something you genuinely wish you had done differently. Most of the time, the truth is far more complicated than the sentence you have been punishing yourself with.

The new Pet Loss Guilt & Grief Digital Bundle gives you somewhere to work through that properly.

It includes the complete 235-page workbook, a 125-page printable companion writing journal with all 22 guided exercises, a 46-page guilt guide for the days when the whole workbook feels like too much, and A Gentler Thought, an interactive five-stage tool for working through the one thought you keep returning to.

The complete digital bundle is ÂŁ12.99 and available through the link in my bio.

And if you cannot buy anything right now, the free guilt guide is there too. I want you to have somewhere to start. đŸ€Ž

After you lose your pet, time can feel different. There can suddenly be more of it, but somehow it doesn’t feel like something you’ve gained.

For so long, part of your day belonged to them. You didn’t necessarily notice it because looking after someone you love becomes woven into the way you live. You knew they were there. They needed you. Being needed by them had become part of who you were.

Then they’re gone, and the time remains.

It can hurt to discover that you miss being needed. You might even miss the things that once felt inconvenient, because you would happily be inconvenienced today if it meant they were still here.

So when someone tells you that at least you have more freedom now, they may not understand what that freedom cost.

You don’t want fewer responsibilities.

You want your pet.

And if you would give anything to have part of that old life back, even for one day, I hope you know why. You weren’t simply filling your time by looking after them.

You were sharing your life with them. đŸ€Ž

There was a time when getting home was the best part of the day.

You’d check the time and know they were waiting.

You could already picture the greeting at the door. The warmth. The cuddles. That ridiculous happiness at seeing you again, even after a few hours.

Other people might have thought you had to get home. Like it was a chore.

But it never felt like that. You got to go home to them.

And that feeling can still come without warning. For one second, you’re back in that life.

Until it hits.

They’re not there anymore.

They don’t need you to come home anymore.

And being needed by them was one of the best parts of your day. đŸ€Ž

I wasn’t trying to think about that day.
I was trying to spend a moment with you.

To remember the way you pushed your head back under my hand when I stopped stroking you. As if we hadn’t agreed that I was finished.

That’s where I wanted to go.
But somehow, I’m back at the end.

And I miss remembering you without having to get through that part first.

There was so much of us before that day.

You were here.
We had a life together.
I want to remember that, too. đŸ€Ž

What is one little thing about them you wish you had on video?
