🍧 Ice lollies anyone?! 💡 What are your tips for keeping hydrated in this weather?👩‍🍼 How are you managing in this heat? 😎 Who else has acclimatised?! We are set for highs of 35 degrees celcius today in parts of the UK and so hydration in on everyone's mind! But of course moreso if you are breastfeeding/pumping. As breastmilk is predominantly water, we need to be ensuring adequate intake of water so that we can remain safe and avoid dehydration during a heatwave, especially when our homes and workplaces are not equipped to deal with this kind of heat! If you are worried about yourself or your baby, seek a face to face review with a medical professional. Stay safe and keep sharing safety tips!🏆 My name is Shami, and I am an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) tongue tie specialist and mum of 3 working in the Midlands, UK. I share daily tips and answer your feeding questions here in my little corner of the internet!#ibclc #breastfeedingduringaheatwave #heatwave #breastfeedingandhydration #dehydration by @thriveinfantfeeding

👀 What you should see: Your baby is focused on feeding and calm, your baby should not be distressed or dribbling/spilling milk as they feed👂What you should hear: Swallowing and breathing, your baby should not be holding their breath, gasping, coughing or making slurping or clicking sounds If your baby is struggling with transitioning from breast to bottle and back, seek supportTips: 1. Wait for your baby to open their mouth before placing bottle teat in their mouth. Encourage this by gently pressing the teat against their chin2. Use a slow flow teat to begin with until your baby is familiar with the bottle. Some babies who are used to a fast let down may prefer a faster flowing teat but remember, the let down settles, the flow of the bottle is continuous3. Maintain skin to skin where possible and try starting with a breastfeed if your baby is particularly hungry. Learning is easier when babies are more relaxedIf you found this useful, please drop me a follow and help me to grow my online community of parents! 🏆 My name is Shami, and I am an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) tongue tie specialist and mum of 3 working in the Midlands, UK. ⚠️ Send this reel to anyone who is a parent/grandparent/carer of babies and children!🌞 As we approach another heatwave here in the UK, everyone is talking about keeping the kids hydrated and after 6 months, so many babies will also start taking milk in cups/beakers Using a straw might be one of the ways to get more fluids in your little one on a hot day, (mainly because it's novel and fun) and of course many of us now have reusable straws in our cutlery cupboard...but are they safe for little mouths? Well...I spend my days completing oral assessments and being reminded of how soft the palate actually is and for me...the answer is NO! It might not be the time that you are sat with them, but they could fall, trip or be knocked forward by accident with that straw in their mouth, and THAT is when a metal straw can cause serious injury, certainly if it manages to perforate the palate...(which it absolutely can!)⚠️ A few things to consider: 1. Always supervise use of straws (generally supervise mealtimes full stop)2. Don't let children walk around with bottles, beakers, straws or any other hard object in their mouth. Sitting still when drinking is a great habit3. Paper straws still require supervision, they will get soggy and can easily break away into the mouthIf your little one prefers a straw cup, most childrens cups come with soft straws :) ..also, keep hydrated, keep indoors, seek support/medical review if you are worried about your baby or child during a heatwave🏆 My name is Shami, and I am an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) tongue tie specialist and mum of 3 working in the Midlands, UK. Thought I would jump on the trend! Here are some reasons that I hear in clinic for why a baby might not have been referred for assessment:1. Weight gain satisfactory 2. No feeding concerns identified 3. Did not meet referral criteria 4. Looked "mild" to the untrained eye5. Stopped breastfeeding 6. Will correct on its own..🤔None of these are actual REAL reasons for denying onward referral...with a SLIGHT exception to 3...but I am sticking by the fact that too many referral criteria focus on feeding method and not on feeding difficulty. A common example is "baby now bottle fed, no longer meeting criteria for referral to tongue tie clinic" ...well yes...the baby can't latch to the breast and so HAS to have milk still?!?! The cost of not referring for a full assessment: 1. Missed opportunity for corrective procedure (where indicated)2. Missed opportunity for a thorough oral assessment to determine other possible causes for feeding difficultyIf you were featuring on this Netflix series, what would you say about the tongue tied babies who were failed?🏆 My name is Shami, and I am an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) tongue tie specialist and mum of 3 working in the Midlands, UK. Quick fire round! I have a FREE mini symptom checklist for you, if you suspect your baby has tongue tie, comment "checklist" and I will send it to your DMs📣 a normal frenulum can easily be mistaken for a posterior tongue tie to the untrained eye. If diagnosing a tie was so easy, practitioners wouldn't need to complete advanced clinical skills modules to learn about it!📣 sometimes tongue tie is 'blamed' for what can be corrected with trained feeding support. Every consult should come with feeding support, after all that is what we are trying to improve!📣 every procedure comes with risk, a professional who tells you 'it's a quick snip' without discussing risk isn't helping you to make an informed choice. Your consultation should give you enough time, information and support to decide whether you feel the benefits outweigh the risksFeeding struggles that a tongue tie release alone WON'T fix:1. Aversion2. Oral dysfunction 3. Poor muscle tone4. Oral tension5. High palate6. AllergiesShare this with your family and friends, other parents and to anyone who has a baby with suspected tongue tie 💚 🏆 My name is Shami, and I am an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) tongue tie specialist and mum of 3 working in the Midlands, UK. 🌞 We are mid heatwave here in the UK right now and sadly our homes are just not designed for it! Send this reel to anyone who is looking after a young baby in hot weather! With no air con, fans blowing hot air around and a baby who needs to be held/fed, things can get a bit sticky!Instinctively, in the heat you will want to remove clothing but keep a thin, cotton layer on can help to stop you both from sticking to each other but if you do prefer to go without, you can use a cotton muslin or cloth between you and your baby so that feeding/carrying/skin to skin is more comfortable⚠️ A few things to consider: 1. Young babies/ newborns can't regulate their own body temperature so ensure they dont get cold with any method that you use2. Older babies may prefer to remain in a thin cotton layer when being carried rather than being just im a nappy, especially if you are both hot and bothered3. Toddlers and children, you can wet the cloth and wring it out to use as a wipe if needed4. Always use lukewarm water, using cold water isn't pleasant and wont have the intended benefitKeep hydrated, keep indoors, seek support/medical review if you are worried about your baby or child during a heatwave🏆 My name is Shami, and I am an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) tongue tie specialist and mum of 3 working in the Midlands, UK. Share this to a mum/parent who is bottle feeding or combi feeding! ..and save for later! For an easy to follow bottle feeding checklist, straight to your inbox, comment "bottle" This advice isn't exclusive to breastfed babies or combi fed babies. Angles, teat shape, flow rate and posture all impact feeding even if a baby has bottle fed from the beginningIf your baby is uncomfortable when feeding, seek support. Most often parents change bottle teat, bottle brand and milk brands before consulting someone for a feeding assessment.Knowing WHAT to change and WHY is important...and you don't need the stress of trial and error as a new parent! 🏆 My name is Shami, and I am an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) tongue tie specialist and mum of 3 working in the Midlands, UK.
