Friends in SF 002: Win 💛

Win brings with her a calming energy that matches the easy going days we spend around the city. It’s her first time visiting so I take her to some of the places I know I would want to remember, hoping that they leave her with the same good memories they have left me.

We have cups of Sencha Green Tea at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park
Go on a stroll at Crissy Field and the Palace of Fine Arts
Eat pizza, pasta & seafood-filled cioppino in North Beach (SF’s little Italy and one of my favorite neighborhoods)
Eat plates of Dim sum in Pacific Heights
Listen to live Jazz in Hayes Valley
And enjoy morning burritos from the Mission.

Friends in SF 001: Mofi 🤎

I look forward to yearly reunions with my Mof because for a period (that’s always too short), we get to pretend like we live in the same city & not a country apart.

we eat fish and chips by the ocean
cook a meal together at home
make a scrapbook as a gift for our friend who’s a new mom
giggle in art gallery rooms
take the ferry to spend an afternoon in charming Sausalito
swap clothing and jewelry
leaving ourselves with little reminders of each other

This year, traveling has brought me close to loved ones when we needed each other the most, closed the gap between me and my long-distance relationships, allowed us the privilege of being in each other’s space every day, if only for a short time, and added to the ever-expanding quilt of memories I carry with me.

On some of these travels, my heart was heavy with grief; on others, I was overwhelmed with joy. Through all of them, I wrote, whispered, and said out loud all my reasons to be grateful. 💛

We slipped away to Southern California to spend some time on one of the Channel Islands: Catalina Island.

Charming and quiet (at least during the off-season), it’s the kind of place where you can have the ocean entirely to yourself at sunrise; the kind of place beautiful stories are set in; the kind of place that makes you want to be alone with yourself, or alone together. 💛

Sea Ranch, California 💛

Every so often, either I or LB will suggest that we go somewhere; it can be a plane or car or train ride away, just as long as we get to go together. This time I suggested we go to Sea Ranch, unaware that I selected the exact location he was planning to propose in.

(I asked him what he would have done if I chose somewhere else, and he said he would have tried to convince me otherwise. It wouldn’t have been hard, the Sonoma Coast is a dream)

As if I didn’t love this place enough, it is now the place where LB asked me to marry him, the place where I said a teary, love-filled “yes” surrounded by California’s breathtaking coastline, wrapped in love and the warm hues of a just setting sun. everything was perfect.

Thank you, God. thank you to my sweet fiancé, thank you to my precious loved ones, and thank you to California, for the gift of new beginnings, and the most wonderful place (and person) to call home.

p.s, my favorite romances (in books, film and IRL) have always been the ones where friends become lovers. watching this play out in my life has felt like reading one of my favorite books: swoony, inspiring, and filled with moments I won’t soon forget.
