In the studio today. Making a pillow from cleaning cloths for one of my squiggle figures.

This piece has been on a long journey! It began in February 2025, it’s been evolving sporadically since then but I’m starting to feel that it’s nearly finished.

Congratulations to @melanieahmed.art for curating a fantastic exhibition bringing together 13 painters. Such an interesting and varied collection of work. I had a great time at the opening, reconnecting with the warmth of the East London art community and meeting some new folk too. Can’t believe it’s 9 years since we left!

It was so nice to be able to celebrate this with friends and family. Thank you @alanwoodhouse @sparklemarple 💗

It's 10 years today since I married my incredible wife @tinseledwards. What an occasion that was, and so much has happened since then. A few dear people who we shared that day with are no longer with us and I'm thinking about them today too. But it's important, as they would definitely have insisted, to be thankful for the good fortune that life can sometimes bestow on you, and I treasure sharing my world with a truly wonderful person and our lovely children. I am a lucky man and I know it. As my favourite band so elegantly put it, I've a butterfly stomach for you. That will never change xxxxxxxxxx taken in Battlefield, Glasgow by @tinseledwards

If you are looking for artist mentoring I can’t recommend @allysonkeehan highly enough. I recently had four sessions - each one was a lively, enjoyable conversation filled with insight and inspiration.

When I started a new (full-time) job last September I was worried about how it might impact my art practice. I decided to sign up to mentoring to help keep the momentum going. I asked Allyson if we could focus the sessions on the work - the materials, the making, and the research and themes driving it.

It was so helpful talking to another artist mother. Our varied discussions included all sorts - abstract painting, texture and materiality, storytelling and narrative, childcare, how to find studio time and consistency alongside a job and family, routines and repetition, the abject, surrealism, healing and repair, Ben Luke’s podcast and new book, clouds of glitter and The ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi. Concentration face and ceramic works in various stages over the past 2 years, mostly made in the workshop - @glasgowsculpturestudios

I was lucky to receive funding from @creativescots to develop my ceramics, the grant covered the cost of clay, glazes and membership at GSS where I could access the workshop and kilns.

I’m still developing my squiggle characters and learning more about the materials as I go.

To follow on from my last post about the Creative Scotland funding - some images of work I made during the Turps Correspondence Course 24/25.

Each student is assigned a painting mentor, communication with your mentor happens at four points through the year and is in the form of a letter. I found the slower pace of this written communication to be really helpful and I still keep physical copies of our letters in the studio to read through from time to time. Having the regular deadlines to produce 500 words of text helped me to reflect on my studio work in a more systematic way.
