When you have 6 weeks for all animation before Sundance there are no shortcuts or safety nets.

For the stop motion scenes in Andre Is An Idiot, director @tonybenna built the damn thing by hand—miniature sets, a puppet Andre, every warped detail—then dragged it to life one frame at a time.

We got in the trenches with him to help produce the sequences. No plugins or cheats. Just patience, glue, light, and a healthy dose of chaos.

ANDRÉ IS AN IDIOT is a celebration of life filled with raw honesty, surreal bursts of imagination, and brazen irreverence. In this Sundance award winning documentary, André Ricciardi sets out to chronicle his final journey after receiving a diagnosis he could have prevented, through comedic vérité storytelling and fantastical stop-motion interludes.

Ignoring those cheerful medical reminders in your mail or on your tv is a terrible idea. Just ask André Ricciardi. He was a brilliant, wild San Francisco ad man who lived life completely on his own terms—until he skipped a routine colonoscopy. After getting a stage 4 cancer diagnosis, he did the most “André” thing possible: he made a comedy about dying.

André Is an Idiot is the funniest, most heartbreaking documentary you will see this year. It tracks his bizarre final chapters—from doing psychedelics in the desert to hiring a “death yell” coach—while delivering a massive wake-up call to the rest of us.

I watched it, laughed until it hurt, cried, and then immediately booked my screening.

Read my full review on Yahoo to see why this beautiful, unapologetic cinematic PSA will change your perspective on life and death. Then do yourself a massive favor: call your doctor and schedule your check-up.
