In @your_art_tribe this month we’re using NotanIzer as a composition tool with @karmensart masterclass. Actually it’s been really helpful .. not only in encouraging me to explore more depth with my charcoal drawings but also to photograph the drawings in progress to see where I can tweak the darks even more… and push the subjects back forward using the Notan layers .. it a cool dance of value contrast

The large sheets of handmade paper I’m working on don’t allow me to erase any of the charcoal (it breaks down the parchment of the paper and fluffs it up- which I like. But in moderation) so I’m grateful for the Notan ideas to guide some choices as I go

This is how it looks now through the latest Notan setting :)
How do you find Notan as an app ? Is it something you find helpful

Every time I catch the train from this beautiful little station across my street I think of the Victorians .. and what a phenomenal period in history it must have been to live through.

Steam trains, viaducts, telephones, sewing machines and flushing toilets .. all things we take for granted now. Yet life changing for the people of England.

I wonder too how the green land must have looked .. all carved up and exposed as the engineers raced through hills carving way for modernity.

Whilst on my short train journey I leant a few things about the Victorians I didn’t know …

Tatoos were trendy. Made popular by King George V. 😚

The Victorian green dresses and interior styled wallpapers were dyed green with arsenic, with dreadful consequences to anyone who succumbed to fashion. 😟

Headless Photography was in vogue. People loved trick photography that made portraits look like the subject was holding their own severed head 🤪

And there was this weird trend where People sent mean insult cards called “vinegar valentines” instead of romantic notes to people they disliked .. how odd !!

.. and I wonder whether the station workers who lived in my cottage back then, were prone to any of these fads. !? Or were they quietly getting on with domestic life trying to figure out the new potato peeler gadget and jelly mould in the back room

Finally I get to see Christian Hook’s painting of Alan Cumming up close In Edinburgh. It’s my second attempt after the painting was out on loan last time I travelled to the city.

This is one of Hook’s earlier pieces commissioned after winning Landscape Artist of the year in 2014.
I was hooked (‘Scuse the pun) on that show especially seeing the artist’s mastery at disruption.. and ability to capture that vibrant energy and movement many of us strive for in our own work.
Seeing this painting up close and for real explains why the judges gasped when the curtain fell on the reveal ! It’s everything and more .. and captures the cheekiness of Cumming in every little mark and movement

So I sit here staring at the little blank rectangle space on a form that wants me to describe my occupation.
Is it possible to give myself just one label. One title.
Is the word ‘Artist’ enough
Does it describe that I Make Art…Curate content…Edit video…Lead and support a community.

I come to the conclusion my occupation could be ‘creative human’.

That feels like the right description for an occupation that morphs as I do
Problem is .. the form wants to give me a label - and there’s no drop down title box to fit this one

Framing : one of my favourite ways to add another layer to artwork..
I collected these from my framer yesterday @roman_moor_art_framing .. I’m chuffed with the colours we chose and how my quirky little Lino cut and collage pieces come to life under glass

All 10 artworks will now be on show @scargallery23 in Ravenstonedale.
Flora and Fauna
Opening exhibition Friday 28th August
It’s my first group show in Cumbria ! 🤩

Painting with paper and the obsession with cutting and sticking collage continues. Exploring ideas of rejoining and reassembling..it’s painstakingly slow but it’s the only way I can learn what compositions work and what doesn’t. It would be easy to return to something I know how to do well. But as always my creativity weighs in stronger and has the ultimate say
😅😅She’s a lot like the ‘she who will be obeyed’ kind of personality

But she’s also a creative butterfly so may well get bored and move onto something else before long - but for now this is where I’ve landed .

Do you ever think about how creativity stretches us.. forces us to question and choose.. It’s a kind of push pull of yes I like, no I don’t. Something that becomes second nature.

The trick I’ve found is pay attention to a couple of things during these these experimental phases ..
* ignore doubt when it creeps in. Keep going
* ignore the inner critic. Keep going
* acknowledge when it’s not working. Keep going
* respond with what feels right. No other voice matters

I found myself a little thing of beauty @amazingfinds_uk
Typically I print collage paper with woodblock fonts .. but when Rob opened the drawers on this vintage copper letter press treasure I knew it had to find a place for it (in my now overstuffed studio)

These little drawers all labeled with old type and stacked with copper letters, has made its way to me via Yorkshire and an old shoe factory.
Now it sits alongside the up cycled shoe-rack paint trolley and workman’s bench. All things that were once in daily use by craftspeople .. and now live on in my creative world :)

I’ll probably just sit here and look at them now and not get much work done

Gentle reminder not to hold on too tight. To outcomes. To journey. To ways of seeing. To well worn routines or pathways.
