It’s International Day of the Midwife! How we give birth informs how become mothers. A healthy mother and baby are far from all that matter in birth. They are the baseline. The bottom floor.

Birth is the most transformative experience in a woman’s life and she deserves to walk away from her birth feeling satisfied and at peace with how she was treated and cared for no matter how or where she gave birth.

Midwifery was never really a career choice for me, just a calling. I feel so blessed and honored to not only be with women on their journeys, but also to have a global platform to share the knowledge and experience I’ve gained.

But most of all, I am grateful to sit with women and their babies, to hear their stories, to learn from what they have learned along the way. Those are the experiences that have shaped me most.

Almost seven years ago, when @cynthiaovergard asked me if I might want to start a podcast called Down to Birth with her, I didn’t think I had much to say, but said, “sure, let’s try it.” Now I have more to say than ever before and no plans to slow down on learning and growing from the women we meet. So, thank you, Cynthia. I can’t imagine doing this with anyone else!

And thank you to the many midwives who have been an incredible source of wisdom and knowledge and have mentored me along the way, even when they didn’t know it. Namely, @dr.rachel.reed,@thebarbaraharper, @drsarahjbuckley, @jonimidwife and my own midwives Vicki Marin and Saraswathi Vedam. I wouldn’t have become a homebirth midwife without them.

The world is short about 900,000 midwives. The data suggest we could prevent nearly two-thirds of maternal deaths, newborn deaths, and stillbirths worldwide by increasing access to midwives around the world and by giving mothers and babies the gentle, undisturbed, peaceful birth that is their birth rite.
