Executive Dean of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Mashupye Maserumule, delivered the welcome address and outlined the purpose of the Humanities Excellence Awards, setting the tone for a celebration of outstanding achievements, dedication and commitment to academic excellence. As the keynote speaker, he reflected on the university’s responsibility to serve society, particularly those on its margins, while recognising the award recipients whose contributions continue to advance teaching, research, innovation and student success. Prof. Maserumule further emphasised the strategic importance of BrightSpace as TUT’s official learning management system, describing it as “not a feel-good technology, but as a strategic choice to respond to students’ realities.” He stressed that “BrightSpace is not about replacing lecturers, but about amplifying their instructional prowess.” He called on academic staff to move beyond using the platform as a repository for learning materials and embrace it as a tool for interactive teaching, monitoring student progress and identifying students at risk through data analytics. His address reinforced the importance of leveraging technology to enhance the learning experience, improve student retention and support academic success.
