Our latest shoot in NYC for Rao’s Homemade, under the theme SEEING RED. 🍅🍷 This one was a big one: 4 marathon days on set, 38 shots, and a crew of 30 amazing humans. From the detailed shotlist to the tiniest food styling idea, we were lucky to be involved from start to finish. It was all about bringing Rao’s world to life. Red here is more than a color, it’s an emotion. It’s the bold vibrancy of fresh tomatoes, the refined richness of aged wine, the warmth of gathering around the table. Huge thanks to the amazing 2D team who made this production feel so smooth, and to the whole creative crew. Grazie mille! Join us on Sunday 4th May for a special transatlantic edition of Rambutan & Cousins! The incredible @tyna.hoang and Andrea Nguyen @apn_apn are flying over from New York for a Saigon spring evening at Rambutan. Their cooking collaboration @em_oi_em brings together their Vietnamese origins and American upbringing for a diaspora mash-up we’re so excited to bring to London for the first time. They’ll be serving a delicious tasting menu (£50pp) with Sri Lankan accents - expect dishes like banh khot shrimp gundu dosa, bo la lot skewers with iraichi thool and banana leaf grilled fish. Pub day for @calvinhungry and @pmelnick’s book Salt Sugar MSG! If you’ve ever met me, odds are that I’m wearing a @bonniesbrooklyn hat that proudly says Cantonese American. Love to see a fellow Canto boi executing on such a high level and to some how convince North Brooklynites people that hup toh ha (walnut shrimp for you non Cantonese speaking heathens) is factually delicious. So when he asked me to shoot his book, i immediately said ok when and where. He asked me to assemble the Avengers of Asian food creatives for this shoot, which naturally meant @tyna.hoang and @nicolelouie, and we rocked it out for six days of non stop cooking and shooting. Fun facts: 1) I got a gnarly hand wound on like day two of the shoot that looked like it required stitches, but I had Calvin take a look at it, and he was like oh no you’re all good, I’ve seen worse in kitchens. So we crazy glued it together and I shot one handed for the rest of the shoot. 2) Calvin’s all time favorite song is Pocketful of Sunshine by Natasha Bedingfield. When I asked him why, his answer was that you literally cannot have a bad day while listening to this song. So every morning on my drive to the shoot, I blasted the shit out of Pocketful of Sunshine. He wasn’t wrong. 3) Don’t be fooled by their kind and chill disposition. Phoebe and Calvin are absolute freaks of nature. They wrote this book while raising a newborn child, taking care of a sweet sweet Australian Cattle Dog, and running a successful restaurant that they lived above (the most hardcore Chinese guy thing I’ve heard in recent memory). These recipes are so truly delicious and made for home cooking and I am not lying when I say that every single recipe is a banger and would eat out of this everyday for the rest of my life.
