[Refurb]
2026 / Hyderabad / Katha coffee 01
2330 sq.ft.

Set within an existing hotel building, the project is a retrofit that begins by opening up the facade to bring more light into the space. The new edge accommodates seating, retail and display within a simple partition.

A 50 × 50 mm GI tube frame forms the structure of the partition, creating a simple grid within which the different elements are placed.

WindowScape became a reference point for us while working on this edge, particularly its ideas of the “seating window” and “working window”.

A snippet from the book :
Approaching the window through the lens of “behavior” directs our attention to the phenomena adjacent to it, the light and wind entering through the glass, the heat accumulating there, the person gazing outside while basking in that warmth, the pedestrian on the street, and the greenery spreading across the garden. It situates the window within the web of relationships connecting these elements.

We’re making a little more room for your ideas.

We’ve heard from many of you who needed a little more time to put your work together — so A Common Ground is keeping submissions open a little longer.

If you’re a designer, architect, student, collective, or emerging practitioner working on projects that engage with communities, everyday life, local knowledge, and new ways of practising design, this is your chance to be part of the conversation.

We’re looking for enthusiastic designers and students from South Asia with thoughtful, socially relevant and context-driven work across architecture, landscape, interiors, textiles, graphics, product, service, digital and beyond.

New deadline: 30 September 2026, 11:59 PM IST

Take the extra time. Refine your work. Bring it to the Common Ground.

Submit via the link in bio.

2026 / Hyderabad / katha coffee 01
2330 sq.ft.

Responding to Katha’s vision, we looked beyond the space itself and towards the Indian street, a place shaped by everyday rituals, changing uses and the materials that define it.

We began by understanding what was already there, choosing to adapt rather than replace. Working within the constraints of the existing space, every intervention was guided by function, material and budget. Stainless steel, plywood and existing materials uncovered during the process were retained for their familiarity and quiet connection to Indian streets and neighbourhood shops.

These images capture moments from that process testing ideas, refining materials and shaping details.

2024 / Chennai / Restaurant + garden
2433 sq.ft.

Repurposing a mid-century home and garden in Nungambakkam, Chennai into a restaurant & bakery.

Moving from the garden, the house is approached through the original porch. Within this threshold a compact takeaway bakery unit has been inserted, while maintaining the scale and intimacy of the entrance.

As the site transitioned from construction to an inhabited space, everyday routines gradually set in.

Photos taken between October 2009 and December 2024.

Old + New
Teak wood column of a home built in 1919 in Ranwar, a village in bandra that dates back to 1716.

The Burma teak column sits on a stone base, with a 0.7mm aluminium sheet metal wrap that deflects rain while remaining open below, allowing the wood to breathe and dry naturally.

A base detail developed from a furniture reference, image to the end.

Project together with
Carpentry : Surtharam and Harish.
