🩺SEPTEMBER TRAININGS🩺

Our members started this semester strong with four excellent trainings in September!

Operations Coordinator Grace Rubin and Training Coordinator Sophie McIntosh gave a very useful “Standbys 101” training. UDECU staffs many standbys, mainly athletic events, in which patient movement can become quite challenging. Grace and Sophie provided our members with hands-on practice in various different patient movement scenarios, such as using the reeves and stair chair in the bleachers.

PA-C and UDECU alum Trevor Thomas taught us all about shock and resuscitation. Thank you Trevor for sharing detailed slides from PA school lectures! It was a great experience for our members to learn more about the in-hospital management of shock, expanding on what we encounter in EMS.

UDECU alum and former training coordinator Madi McWatters talked all about abdominal emergencies. Madi discussed the many possible differentials for these calls, covering both the traumatic and medical causes of abdominal pain. Madi also reviewed the assessments and interventions that we can perform for these patients.

UDECU alum and former field training officer Kylie Panzner provided us with a thorough lecture about trauma assessment. This is such an important topic that our members love receiving extra training on, and Kylie did a great job reviewing our BLS protocols and walking us through how to approach these trauma calls. She also gave us three different trauma scenarios to work through together!

A huge thank you to Grace and Sophie, Trevor, Madi, and Kylie for taking the time to share their knowledge with us! by @ud_ecu

Our last senior to be recognized is Ryan Hoefer. Ryan is a Human Physiology major with a minor in Medical Humanities. Ryan joined UDECU because he was excited by the opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience while supporting his campus community. Ryan served as our Scheduling officer in 2025, for which he ensured we met our necessary staffing requirements, kept track of our members’ availability, and built our schedule each and every month!

Ryan says that his favorite part of UDECU is “the family that is always there to support [him] and motivate [him] to grow into a better person.” He met some of his best friends through the organization, and he is incredibly grateful. Ryan feels the most valuable part of UDECU is “working as part of a team to learn, train, and become a better provider while also being able to make a difference on campus.” He has enjoyed the opportunity to field train other candidates with the same process and resources that gave him the knowledge and experience he carries with him today.

After graduation, Ryan will attend the George Washington School of Medicine to earn his MD. We are so proud of Ryan for this accomplishment, and we know he will keep succeeding in the future. Thank you Ryan for all your hard work and dedication to UDECU, and we wish you all the best! by @ud_ecu

Happy National EMS Week! 🚑🚨

Here’s what we did and how we honored one of our favorite weeks of the year—
• Sunday, May 17th: We had a great time staffing the UD MLAX standby!
• Monday, May 18th: Many of our members attended an R&R event during finals week where we baked and decorated a funfetti cake to celebrate EMS week!
• Tuesday, May 19th & Wednesday, May 20th: Some of our members had the chance to visit the ChristianaCare 2026 EMS Week Cook Out. Additionally, our incredible facilities officer, Jose, did an amazing job cleaning up our Solar House to get it ready for the summer!
• Thursday, May 21st through Friday, May 23rd: We staffed three days of UD Commencement and Convocation ceremonies. Thank you to the twenty members who worked these events—we couldn’t have done it without you. We also got the chance to see our lovely Seniors walk the stage!
• Lastly, all throughout EMS week, we held a Food Drive that we will continue with for the start of the summer. Thank you to everyone in the organization who brought in donations for the Food Bank of Delaware. Let’s keep it up!

After all these festivities, we are so excited for NCEMSF’s Collegiate EMS week. 😁 by @ud_ecu

Our next senior to be recognized is Abby Seigle! Abby is a Human Physiology major who joined UDECU in her sophomore fall. Abby decided to join UDECU due to her interest in getting involved in healthcare through direct experience. She says that when she decided to apply, she had no idea how far that decision would take her! Abby served as our Equipment Officer for three semesters, for which she managed and maintained our supplies and resources, as well as ensured that all our apparatus are appropriately stocked at all times.

Abby says her favorite part about UDECU is “being part of a team working towards a common goal of providing the highest quality of EMS care and shaping the next group of first responders on campus.” Abby feels that it has been so wonderful to become friends with the people in this organization, and that they constantly push her to be the best that she can be both on and off shift. In Abby’s eyes, the most valuable aspect of UDECU is that it teaches you resilience and dedication through the rigorous field training process. Abby says: “UDECU’s field training, continued education, and membership have shaped me into the provider I am today.”

After graduation, Abby plans on taking a gap year and applying to Physician Assistant (PA) school. Thank you Abby for all of your hard work and dedication to UDECU–we wish you all the best for your future and can’t wait to see your success! by @ud_ecu

🩺MAY TRAININGS🩺

Although May is short with finals season, we still had two amazing trainings from four of our seniors!

Seniors Leah Rizzo and Nate Vaszily gave a presentation on Health and Social Work in EMS! Leah and Nate discussed intersectionality in the context of healthcare and gave an in depth explanation of the five domains of the social determinants of healthcare. They also talked about social work and its overlap with EMS, specifically going over what to look for as well as when/which cases we may report when working in EMS. Lastly, they explained how to effectively communicate with vulnerable populations, presenting us with multiple case studies. This was a very useful and important training for our members, and we are very grateful that Leah and Nate took the time to create such a well thought-out lecture for us.

Seniors Sarah Buckingham and Ryan Hoefer provided us with a super interactive EMS Jeopardy training! Sarah and Ryan made their own Jeopardy questions that covered a variety of important EMS topics and fell under the following categories: BLS Protocols, CPR Operations, Trauma Assessment Findings, Medical Assessment Findings, Prehospital Alerts, Altered Mental Status, and Pediatric Patients. Congrats to Grace, Nate, Abhi, David, & Morgan B for being the winning team. This was such a fun experience for our members that certainly got competitive!

Thank you to our lovely presenters for an enjoyable and productive month of training! by @ud_ecu

Our next senior to be recognized is Faye Bouyoukas. Faye is a Medical Diagnostics and Anthropology double major. She applied to UDECU after seeing a UDECU class presentation on the first day of her MMSC100 class during her freshman spring semester. Because of her interest in emergency medicine, Faye wanted to gain clinical hours to prepare for medical school, and she thought UDECU seemed like a valuable and fun opportunity with a great group of people. Faye served as our Finance officer in 2025, for which she tracked and updated our incentive credits each month, managed reimbursements, and recorded fuel receipts for our apparatuses.

Faye’s favorite part about UDECU is all the friends she has made. Faye says: “all of my closest friends from college are in UDECU and they are all people I plan on keeping in touch with for the rest of my life.” Faye has so many good memories with everyone and feels like she made a second family here. She “loves being surrounded by likeminded people with similar goals, and UDECU offered that.” Faye feels that the most valuable aspect of UDECU is the opportunity to directly help others and give back to the community. She says that this job has given her a sense of purpose as she is “using [her] skills to heal and take care of others, which is what [she] plans on eventually doing as a doctor later in life.” Faye also loves teaching, and being able to teach and field train new EMTs has been incredibly fulfilling.

After graduation, Faye will be taking two gap years while she applies to medical school. She eventually hopes to become a surgeon, specializing in either orthopedics or trauma plastics. Thank you Faye for always being so hardworking and welcoming—we are so excited to keep seeing you thrive! by @ud_ecu

Our next senior to be recognized is Samantha Stankiewicz. Sam is a Medical Diagnostics Major
on the Pre-PA track. She joined UDECU in her sophomore spring due to her interest in emergency medicine. She applied almost immediately after attending a UDECU interest meeting where she saw the determination and dedication of our members! Sam served as Public Relations officer in 2025, for which she managed our social media and planned various community outreach events.

Sam’s favorite part about UDECU is the close-knit friendships she has made. Sam says: “not only do we [her and her friends] respond to calls together, but we train, study, and laugh together which has made my college experience only that much better.” Sam has found the extensive training and constant feedback to be most valuable for her growth during the field training process. Sam says it was extremely beneficial, and she found that she was “able to learn something from each call [she] responded to and/or training attended.”Learning how to grow her skills clinically and operationally has helped Sam continue to develop as a provider and as a critical thinker, and she is incredibly thankful for what UDECU has provided these past two years!

After graduation, Sam plans to continue working as she applies to Physician Assistant (PA) school. We thank Sam for all her hard work and time, and we are so excited to see all her future accomplishments! by @ud_ecu

Our next senior to be recognized is Kylie Panzner! Kylie is a Health Behavior Science major with a Biology minor. Kylie joined UDECU because she was always interested in EMS and she loved the idea of being able to obtain hands-on experience treating patients and helping people directly. Kylie served as our Field Training Officer in 2025, overseeing and managing the field training process for so many candidates.

Kylie’s favorite part about UDECU has been the membership! Kylie says: “I have been surrounded by some of the most intelligent and hard working people I have ever met, and I have made so many amazing friendships with people with the same passions as me.” Kylie has found her time as field training officer to be one of the most valuable and fulfilling aspects of her time in UDECU. She “found out from UDECU that training is something that [she] truly enjoys and [she] feels so lucky that [she] was able to continue to pass down everything [she] learned throughout [her] years to help candidates grow as BLS providers.” Kylie also feels it is such an amazing experience to now work besides these candidates as partners, while they now field train our candidates themselves!

After graduation, Kylie plans to continue to work in EMS during her gap year while she applies to Physician Assistant (PA) school. We thank Kylie for all of her hard work and dedication, and we cannot wait to see her accomplishments in the future! by @ud_ecu
