About a month ago, I wrote on a piece of paper a question and slipped it under a glass of water overnight so I could sleep on the answer. The question itself is simple, but my answer was filled with 25 years of confusion and conflict. The question: “What is my name?”

For those who don’t know, my name comes with 2 pronunciations: Key-in and Key-on, but spelled Kian. The reason being that my mom pronounces it Key-in and my dad pronounces it Key-on. That is a much longer story…

Growing up, I had friends literally get in arguments in front of me about who was pronouncing my name right. Then after bickering back and forth they would finally ask me “well which one is it?” Or “which do you prefer?”

How could I choose between my mom and dad? I would always answer “it’s both, it’s about which one YOU preferred.”

It was very annoying and I felt like I was making such a critical choice anytime I introduced myself with one or the other. I felt torn. I felt like the rope in a game of tug of war. At times I still do…

It wasn’t until I had the blessing to attend @nextdocfilm retreat as one of their new cohorts and attend a workshop by @drmamakam where she helped me breakdown my conflict and reclaim my power in self-identity.

I realized that I didn’t have to choose between the two, nor did I need to let others choose either. I can prefer something completely different.

As we talked about ancestry, I felt even more connected to my Japanese roots than ever before, especially recounting the loss from when my grandmother felt she had to leave it behind after her family disowned her for marrying my grandfather. Funny enough she could never pronounce either and always called me “Kin.”

Which is one of the shorthand’s I’m using as I embrace my new name. Kintsugi Kelley-Chung. Kin or Sugi for short. Living a life with options is hard to escape, but this time I don’t feel I’m choosing between two sides of myself and my family, simply two halves of my name.

Been on a helluva life changing journey this year. I just moved with just me and my dog. Made a bunch of new friends. Went on a few adventures. Turned 25 and changed my name. Big things popping.

Fun fact: back when I used to rap my ass off, I opened up for both him and @shelley with some friends at Dickinson University. Not gonna lie, I was a little shocked he remembered that show lol.

I didn’t get to meet him back then, so it was cool to meet him this time. Dope dude. Hope he comes back to the city soon. by @uncleiso

@movementgymsdmv Summer Smackdown ‘23

This was the first ever climbing competition I ever seen and it completely changed my life.

Watching the brilliance of all the athletes on display was mesmerizing and inspiring. The energy was literally bouncing off the walls.

That day I decided I would compete in the following year. I tried out some of the finals boulders and saw that the minimum grade I had to send was v7. So I started training and in less than 7 months, I went from v0 to v7. I did not know at the time that there were novice and intermediate categories, but I think had I known I wouldn’t have locked in nearly as hard.

I didn’t realize that during that year of training, that I was really embarking on a new career path. Climbing had given me a new direction. I soon started coaching, and while i never made it to semis, 2 of my athletes are competing in this year’s finals. Im not gonna lie, I’m incredibly proud.

Now I DJ the comp, and will be DJing again this year. Pull up on me and the athletes to experience something that will truly blow your mind. 5-8pm @ Movement Columbia by @uncleiso

Can’t wait for the temps to cool down so we can slap some boulders again soon.

Recent new favorite genre has been Kuduro, an Angolan dance/club style of music with fast tempos, heavy rhythmic percussion and extremely fat bass lines.

Kuduro meaning “hard ass” in Angolan Portuguese was born in the 1980s during a civil war as a means to bring joy and expression during such crazy times. It has a specific style of dance as well that mimics the movements of people who lost limbs in the war as a means to honor them and reimagine their sacrifices with dignity.

I always find it so interesting how many of the world’s dance genres are born out of trying to find light in the darkness. That’s why I love DJing so much. I get to bring people along a musical journey through time and liberation. Dance is truly revolutionary.
