So grateful to have kickstarted the NEXUS conference with THE powerhouse Karine Jean-Pierre. During our fireside chat she spoke, and we all saw the power of running your own race and the power of advocacy for patients. The joy I felt in the room, the energy and love, is second to none!!

Dèyè mòn, gen mòn. Behind mountains are mountains. In my family it means people have your back. Karine, you are a real mountain for us: a solid person all around. NEXUS was all about having each other’s backs and moving forward, like Karine. 🏔️🙌🏿

This text from my mom made me cry.

I called to thank her, and she gave me permission to share it. If I’m honest, my tears came from a few places. Mostly, guilt. I missed it.

I take my mom to her major appointments and advocate for her. Still, I didn’t realize she needed more support speaking up for herself.

Then she watched my post and wrote her questions down before her visit.

It was a powerful reminder.

At ABGH, we created The Doctor Will See You Now, a doctor discussion guide for people like my mom to help them feel seen and heard.

Her text brought everything full circle. I saw the need for the guide come to life in my own family.

Giving these two women their flowers!

We got to honor Dr. Sophie Balzora and Dr. Rotonya Carr at our B.I.G. event with the Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists (ABGH). We all prepared some words but there was no time to share them that night. So sharing now.

Sophie is a visionary, a loyal friend and a fierce advocate. She pushes us to strive for more and accept nothing less. She rallies the troops behind a vision. So proud to be on the executive committee under her leadership. I have learned so much. Thank you Sophie for all you do. Mwen apresye w.

Dr. Carr. A phenomenal researcher, mentor and sponsor. Personally caring to me (uou know what I mean) and thoughtful, but also a fearless leader. A fierce advocate for liver health. Future president of AASLD. She is just getting started!

The B.I.G. Event is our @blackingastro networking night, and this year ABGH turned 5. We celebrated at the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville. The DJ was going, the room was full, and yes, we DANCED.

We were also celebrating wins. We’re working on health equity and supporting careers in gastroenterology. Five years in, look at what we built together.

So proud of us. Love us.

Last year in Phoenix, we got mentors and mentees of ABGH Rising together. Tomorrow, we’re doing it again in Nashville. We knew we had to make this a yearly tradition.

Mentorship matters. So does sponsorship. But it all starts with RELATIONSHIPS! That’s why being in person is so important. Seeing each other. Swapping ideas and at times giving hugs!

My heart is still full from NEXUS and I’m on my way to the American College of Gastroenterology (@amcollegegastro) annual meeting! Grateful @delta let me fit my luggage on the plane. I hate checking bags! Can’t wait to learn and see my ABGH family.

This jacket was everything!

To all the ladies who asked about the jacket, here it is. It was made just for NEXUS by my dear friend @lolomakesstuff. Clearly she understands me and my love for fashion. Above all, she gets what NEXUS means to me.

She is a doctor-designer who uses feminist fashion to subvert cultural expectations and subjugation of women, promoting freedom of expression and freedom from constraint. Unapologetically.

That is the spirit of NEXUS: no code switching, just an opportunity to be ourselves. Thank you friend for designing a jacket I felt DOPE in!
