On Tuesday 27th October you’re invited to a Spooky Litter Pick at 10am starting at Yarmouth Minster. Our first Wild Yarmouth Rangers seasonal celebration.

Our invitation to become a Wild Norfolk Ranger is open to everyone, whether you’re a ghost, ghoul, bat, pumpkin, werewolf, vampire or just a regular person wearing a sheet. Together we can change perspectives on those wild spots in your neighbourhood that are loved by wildlife.

Curiously we’ve noticed that the wilder areas around town seem to be litter magnets, maybe because people see them as neglected patches. A spot gets wild, nature moves in and lives it, then the litter follows. So we’re on a mission to keep those wild spots wildlife friendly.

Join us on 27th in your best spooky outfit or come as you are. Above everything we’d love to meet you and tell you more about this project. We’ll start in front of the Minster and we’ll then wander through the cemetery to our workshop for some hot beverages and some Halloween wastesmithing. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. We’ll be providing all the equipment so no need to bring a litter picker.

See you on Tuesday 27th October and let’s say Boo! to human waste in the environment 👻♻️💚🌍

SWIPE FOR SOME PRODUCT NEWS: We thought it was about time we introduced our light-shades.

If you make it to the very last image in this carousel then I’m guessing you may be the kind of person who’d enjoy contributing to the things we make through Plastic Club. So many things that we create in the world start with Plastic Club, and these light shades are no exception.

They’re manufactured from DVD case plastic and occasionally ocean rope, both of which are sorted at Plastic Club. What’s more, the idea of using our hexagonal plant pot mould to manufacture light-shade was also a product of the hive mind that happens when our community gathers.

Every single light-shade we manufacture is completely unique. They come with a fabric covered flex in a statement colour. Some come with a dimmer and some with a simple switch. We’re planning to keep these in stock from now on at The Smithy at @st_saviours_yard. We’ll share some posts soon of our current stock♻️💚🌍

Aylsham, this Saturday we’re bringing our pop-up screen printing and badge making workshop to The Friends Meeting House to introduce you all to Wild Norfolk Rangers.

We’ll be there from 10am until 1pm alongside Mend With Friends and the refill shop to offer you an opportunity to find out more about this new project we’ve just started growing. You’ll be able to have a go at screen printing, badge making and maybe even pledge making if you fancy becoming one of our Rangers.

Not in Aylsham on Saturday? We’ll also be at @gressenhall_fw on Sunday at their fabulous Apple Day with our badge maker and lots to share about what this project is all about. Become a Ranger and together let’s start think differently about those wild urban spaces in our neighbourhoods.

See you this weekend 🌾💚🌍

We have a busy week ahead and we’re excited it’s going to end at @gressenhall_fw for one of the highlights of the year. Apple Day was a delight in 2025 and this year will feel like even more of a celebration given it’s their 35th anniversary edition.

We’ll have a few things to sell, but mainly we’re excited to tell everyone about our new Wild Norfolk Rangers call to arms. We’ll be there with our badge maker and lots of enthusiasm for Norfolk’s more overlooked wild spaces.

We can’t wait to see you there on Sunday! If you can’t make it on Sunday and you’d like a tote bag, send us a message and we’ll bring any remaining stock to @st_saviours_yard on Saturday 10th October. You can drop in to grab one during Mend With Friends.

[video description: the video opens with on screen text which reads “Will Wastesmiths be at Gressenhall Apple Day?” laid over a background of a screen printing screen carrying red ink about to be printed. When the text disappears the squeegee is pulled and even the screen lifted to reveal a print that reads “Apple Tart”. The video then cuts to a panning clip of tote bags laid out on a surface and the on screen text “Totes!” ] taken in Norfolk by @wastesmiths

Oak Gall collecting season is here. On the cusp of our Wild Yarmouth Rangers launch tomorrow at our Great Yarmouth workshop, noticing oak galls under a tree is a reassuring seasonal occurrence to observe.

Though the may weather feel unseasonably warm, the Oak Gall Wasps have done their thing and the presence of an exit hole on any galls collected confirms that the next generation has left the nest.

A Wild Ranger is going to be a role we invite you to step into over the coming months, and part of that invitation will be to sign a pledge. We’re hoping some of these pledges will be signed in oak gall ink because it’s possible to transform it into a black ink. Noticing the arrival of oak galls, collecting them and making use of them will very much be a Wild Ranger activity.

Did you know that many commercially available black ink pigments are made using the soot from burning fossil fuels? Knowing this and being aware of the wild alternative makes oak gall ink a must. A Wild Ranger pledge signed in wild foraged pigment embodies everything that this role is about.

We’d love to meet you at our workshop on Estcourt Road on Wednesday 22 September between 10am and 12noon if you’re curious to hear more about the project and the role. This is the start of a long term, Norfolk wide piece of work for @wastesmiths so if you can’t drop in tomorrow then we look forward to catching up with you very soon to tell you more. Alternatively watch this space 🌾💚🌍

Talking about ‘journeys’ has become a bit of a cliche over the last 10 years, and so it was refreshing to leave tangible lines and share tangible things that have changed in each others’ lives on Tuesday.

We were gathered to mark the end of @underopenskyltd, however the morning felt like a celebration of everything this little organisation has created in the world.

We’re very aware that @wastesmiths wouldn’t be what it is today without the support and collaborations with Under Open Sky. Inviting @reubenarmstrong to Great Yarmouth for a special screening of Grandad and the Pier was a memorable early collaboration, followed by a rich programme of Coasters gatherings in local blue space.

Though it’s time for those who made Under Open Sky what it was to focus on different things, so many of the connections and collaborations sparked by this organisation will continue on well into the future. Sometimes in busy everyday life it’s hard to pause and appreciate how far you’ve come. Thank goodness on Tuesday we had chalk to make visual this final journey.

Huge thanks to @jay.goodbrave for making Tuesday happen and to @genevieverudd for bringing @underopenskyltd into all of our lives. It had a massive positive impact on all of us.

This week we have been mostly shredding yellow polypropylene at the @preciousplasticeast workshop, while we prepare for Apple Day at @gressenhall_fw on Sunday 4th October.

We sold our first lampshade last year at this event and so we’re excited to bring more of a range in 2026. See you there 🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏

You are invited to the launch of Wild Yarmouth Rangers on the morning of Tuesday 22nd September. The launch will be at our workshop on Estcourt Road in Great Yarmouth from 10am until noon. Come and have a cup of tea, a snack, take part in an activity and find out more about the project.

Wild Yarmouth Rangers has been formed out of our Tuesday mornings with our Yarmouth community over the last few years. It’s an exploration of how to run a community growing project without a community garden, coupled with an invitation to take action to restore the wild patches and wildlife we love.

At the heart of @wastesmiths is the desire to work to reverse the impact of human waste on the environment, and fundamental to that mission is maintaining a connection to the natural world. So our ambition is that this is the start of a very long term feature of our work. Our hope is to inspire Wild Rangers across Norfolk to take simple actions to connect and protect wild areas and the wildlife that thrives in them. Becoming a Wild Ranger is a role to step into, and we’re planning to offer the opportunity to screen-print a t-shirt or sweatshirt that you already have in your wardrobe to become your Wild Ranger kit.

We’ll have things to get up to and more information to share about the project on Tuesday, followed by weekly gatherings and seasonal celebrations as the year unfolds. We’d love to have you as a ranger 🌾💚🌍

We’ve got a busy month ahead of free cycling support. It all starts this evening with an experiment, our first outdoor Bike Kitchen pilot at @st_saviours_yard from 6pm until 8pm. A Bike Kitchen is an opportunity to get free support to fix your own bike, rather than have someone else fix it for you. You’ll get access to tools and the support of an experienced mechanic.

Our regular monthly Dr Bike at St Saviours Yard is on Saturday 26th September from 10am until 1pm. This is an opportunity to get a free bike repair in a great spot for browsing while you wait to get your bike back. St Saviours Yard has some delicious food and drink offers as well as a whole range of traders to visit.

Finally we have a special Dr Bike at the wonderful Galley Hill Dash on Saturday 19th September from 10am until 1pm. We’re excited to be bringing free bike repairs back to Mile Cross and such a great event with @thecommonlotnc and @epicnorfolk.

We look forward to seeing you and your bike this month 🚲♻️💚🌍 taken in St Saviours Yard by @wastesmiths

Four years after we shared an image of paper cups as our first Instagram post, we thought we’d take a pop-up paper recycling workshop to @runnorwich to test whether it’s possible to recycle the water cups being handed out by the course side. We pitched up on the route at @st_saviours_yard and our crew got busy.

This project was made possible by the players of The Peoples Postcode Lottery. Huge thanks to our volunteers and to @sod.bakery, @funkyvits and @mounehkitchen for all the encouragement ♻️💚🌍
