3 common nutrient deficiencies in clinic that affect gut-skin health include:
• vitamin D
• omega-3s
• zinc

Of course food sources are best but often quality vitamin D supplementation is needed. For omegas & zinc—consider walnuts, hemp & pumpkin seeds.

Low nutrient levels can be a cause of gut dysfunction & inflammatory skin conditions like acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis.

Skin is living tissue. It’s delicately complex, multi-layered, protective yet permeable, & continually evolves day-to-day.

Support the gut-skin axis by avoiding chemical exposures when possible.

Consider transparent brands that define fragrance & look out for additives like parabens, phthalates, PEGs (polyethylene glycols), & other synthetics.

Systems biology applies fundamental concepts for gut-immune health.

A food first approach is often understated yet essential. Not another supplement or processed powder mix.

Coming soon for 2027—culinary medicine + functional medicine in clinic. Take a class with the chef & me.

Diet patterns that support the gut ecosystem—also reduce inflammation & modulate the skin barrier.

Key points:
• whole/unprocessed breakfast
• green & herbal teas
• quality, lean protein with each meal
• weekly plant diversity | polyphenol & antioxidant-rich
• unsaturated fatty acids
• adequate daily water intake
• balanced snacks, including fruit
• dense bean salad for fiber supplement
• simple add-ins: nuts, seeds, & fresh herbs
• resistant starch/prebiotics | cooked & cooled grains/potatoes
• fermented foods for probiotics, including kefir (if tolerated)

Nutrition is individual of course but keep in mind that restrictive diets are outdated. Building immune tolerance to healthy foods & lowering oxidative stress are essential for visible, skin results.

How to reduce skin inflammation & get results—science has taught us certain principles.

From the journal Nutrients, “Although skin and the gastrointestinal system share outward-facing epithelial cells, the skin was not designed to absorb nutrients; this is a feature unique to the GI system.”¹

Fundamentally, nutrients are needed for healthy skin structure & function. Often understated, there is no topical skincare product that takes the place of a nutrient-dense, gut-supportive diet.

Biologically, skin health is mostly an internal process—and notably, nutrients are supplied by dermal capillaries via systemic circulation absorbed from the intestinal lining.

A nutrient-dense diet increases our chance for how nourished & refreshed our skin looks now & in the future. At any age. Because skin is living tissue, never fixed.

Learn more about a systems-based approach & how our day-to-day can modulate the immune response for true, anti-inflammatory effects² with gut-skin nutrition.
