Essex Martin, better known as DJ Essex @essexthedj is a Black queer open format DJ bringing a global approach to the dance floor. Whether opening for queer Black legends like Mykki Blanco, Zebra Katz, Njena Reddd Foxxx, and Cakes Da Killa, hyping crowds as resident DJ of Queer Bar’s MX. for RuPaul’s Drag Race icons such as Jane Don’t, Bosco, Irene The Alien, Onya Nurve, and Sasha Colby, or using social media to spotlight the artists, sounds, and events you didn’t know you needed, DJ Essex has become a trusted source of musical euphoria across many occasions.

How great to see (and photograph!) last week’s Guest Chef Night @_farestart. Featured was Chef Melissa Miranda (@meltronica) of Musang (@musangseattle), Kilig (@kiligseattle) and Wild Cats Catering (@wildcatscatering). She packed the house and brought great creativity and community to the kitchen in support of FareStart’s mission: opening doors and bring people together.

Also big were the volunteer servers from U.S. Bank (@usbank) and sponsors US Foods (@us_foods) and Wells Fargo (@wellsfargo).

The kind of event where the room felt like family, the food disappeared faster than we could plate it, and every smile reminded us of why we love doing this work.

Woke up this morning - after celebrating 6 years of Musang being open with my team and family - to the incredible and humbling news of being nominated as a semifinalist.

I don’t think that there are many words that can describe this journey of being an owner and a chef - and there’s definitely not a handbook of sorts that can prepare you for what this journey is about.

What I can say is that I am no one without the team that chooses to stand with me - day in and day out.

We talk about it with each other often - and it comes up that there are hard days - BUT the good days and the mission of pushing forward Filipino food is THE motivator and what drives us to keep doing what it is we truly love.

Grateful to be in the company of such amazing chefs and leaders in our industry.

This little Musang/Kilig/Wild Cats Sinigang gang is still out here - spreading our love, kindness, intention, storytelling and what being Filipino means to us.
