I’ve been keeping a comic diary everyday through the summer and will be sharing fragments and pages over the next few weeks on my Substack. There’s a link in my bio if you’d like to see/read about the process in more detail.

My regular practice has really shifted over the last couple of years from observational drawing to drawing almost exclusively from my imagination and memory. Recording the everyday moments, conversations and thoughts gives me deep joy, as I often feel like I fill up with them and my comic diary gives me the chance to download and uncluttered my head!

Drawing from my imagination has also helped me to accept that there is no wrong in the way I draw, it’s just what comes out the end of my pencil. If I can’t remember what something looks like I just have to figure out the best way to depict it. It’s helped me to drop my suffocating perfectionism and allow pencil and paper to have a conversation without there being any planned outcome.

Materials: I am using a Pitt Oil Pencil by Faber Castell in a homemade sketchbook. Lots of my drawings are left black and white but I sometimes add colour with watercolour and coloured pencil.

Do you draw from your imagination? Can you imagine yourself as the main character, reporting on your day? #comicdiary #visualjournal #illustratedlife #picturebookillustration by @wildinksketch

A busy, inky and sweaty day in Bristol for the first sessions with @pushingyoursketchingboundaries which made my brain hurt in all the right ways!

Sketching here with Indian Ink, Gouache and various tools including Q-tips and lolly sticks! Thank you @inmaserranito and @swasky for all your great art tips! 🙏🏻❤️❤️ #sketchbookpage #visualjournal #urbansketcher #illustratedsketchbook by @wildinksketch

Back in the studio after a long break and it feels so nice to be quietly dabbing about with paint again.

This is a combo of pencil, watercolour and gouache on cheap cartridge paper (which I’m now regretting) but ploughing on regardless!

A sketchbook page from my travel journal which is now, almost exclusively, drawn from memory or imagination and I love working like that!

This is really an expanded variation of my daily comic diary, which I keep every day but rarely share. I’ve become addicted to working like this after joining in with @janeporterillustrator ‘s lovely comics class a few years ago.

It’s been great to carry on the diary whilst away and having lots more time to work in it, rather than a 15 minute scribble at the end of a busy day!

A walk round St. Mary’s church in Stoke Gabriel, South Devon, and the inspiring things I found there.

I always take lots of photos when I’m out and about and often share them in my stories, but think they are better here, on my grid, to help me remember and reference them in my work.
I hope you enjoy them too! Maybe as sketchbook inspiration or for some other lovely creative project xx

Highlights of May

* A birthday celebration
* The flowers!
* A spring garden in bloom
* Nest box occupation and a successful fledging
* Ermine Moths, Hawk Moths and Night Safaris
* Walking the Cotswold Way
* Heatwave garden lounging
* A performance of Oliver!
* Joy bringing acquisitions: A bicolour pencil, new sharpener blades and ‘I Can’t Stay Long’ by Laurie Lee (50p)

I’ve been creating a monthly journal page like this for over a year now!

It’s a really good idea if you need a sketchbook prompt or inspiration for a sketchbook page to reflect on your day, week or month by filling little boxes with things you’ve done and seen. It becomes a tiny narrative of your life. I like to think of it like a visual poem.

Have a look at #boxjournaling for some examples.
I’ve also written about this way I use my sketchbook in my free Substack newsletter, there’s also an online workshop too, if you’d like to get going but need some inspiration.

Tiny fragments of my month. Highlights include:

🌸Going to Iford Manor to celebrate my Mum’s birthday
🌸Vases of Flowers on the table all month, I loved drawing them! See extra pages.
🌸Watching @boss.morris Finger in the Spring (there was a song!)
🌸 Visiting the Gwen John Exhibition in Cardiff
🌸Walking through the Spring Woodland
🌸Morning Coffee in Stroud
🌸Seed sowing
🌸Dry Washing. I love the shapes it makes on the line
🌸An Easter river walk in Mells collecting houses, butterflies and other people’s washing lines!
🌸Joy bringing book acquisitions: Raucous Invention, Church Kneelers and A Month in The Country
🌸Buying books in Frome

To be honest, I’m not in love with this colour combo, something that often happens, but I normally plough on regardless, keeping in mind that the most important thing is that I’m drawing and recording these little monthly moments . I’ve been doing it for a year now!

Acknowledging and recording tiny joys is a triumphant act. It is something which you are in control of and extremely empowering in a tumultuous world.

I write about this each month in my free Substack newsletter which is full books, ideas and a celebration of small pleasures. Link in my bio

This page is made using Supracolor watercolour pencils by @carandache in a homemade sketchbook.

Astromelias! I’ve been drawing these for a few days now testing out methods on repeat. For this one I laid down a watercolour ground and drew back into it with watercolour pencils. Loved this to-and-fro experimental approach!

Working in a @pithsupply sketchbook, a deviation from my normal homemade sketchbook. I’m using Inktense pencils by @derwentartofficial and Supracolor pencils by @carandache

Happy Easter Monday!
A much needed quiet Easter for us. A bit of pottering in the garden, reading, walking, drawing and eating chocolate… all my favourite things!!

As always I’m drawing in a poorly made (by me) sketchbook (A5) but with super nice thick paper in it, which makes up for its rubbish construction. I’m scribbling with lovely pencils (Museum Aquarelle by @carandache and Lightfast and Inktense by @derwentartofficial ), drinking gallons of Yorkshire tea.

Fragments of March! Highlights from the month include:

* Daily walks down the road to inspect the blossom/house roof combos

* My favourite sculptural ash is still standing

* Massive amounts of insect and bird activity in the garden. Lots of Peacock butterflies, kamakazee blackbirds, mounds of primroses, red kites, sparrow hawks, stoats and a strange, long bodied, black beetle that I haven’t yet identified.

* 5 good reads (via audible, whilst weeding/mulching, and paperback)

* Lunch at The Pony in the Chew Valley and a wander around Frome

* Visiting the Robert Race recycled automata Exhibition in Stroud

* A Mother’s day lunch (random stuff out of the freezer which was has been there since Christmas, I even found 15 homemade mince pies and a Christmas pudding, all very tasty, and weirdly festive). There was a Banoffee option.

* Planting seeds (I’m keeping things low key this year, I often get VERY OVER EXCITED about seeds an then VERY overwhelmed for the whole summer). This year just Cosmos and Zinnias.

* My youngest daughter passing her driving test with only one minor fault!

If you’re new here, I do a page like this every month. I’ve decided to call it ‘Box Journaling’ for obvious reasons. It’s a really nice way to fill a page that might, at first, be daunting.

Where to begin?
You don’t need to cover a page with so many boxes… maybe you could create smaller groups, limiting each page to 3 or 5 (odd numbers) little boxes. Small manageable fragments to tell bigger stories.

If you do have a go, please let me know! I’d love to see!

Let’s use #boxjournaling to collect the work!

I feeling a bit like these tulips today but doing a nice scribbly Sunday morning sketch with steaming mug of tea next to me always helps! (And a good delay tactic when there is a long list of annoying garden jobs to be done)

As always I’m drawing in a poorly made (by me) sketchbook (A5) but with super nice thick paper in it, which makes up for its rubbish construction. I’m scribbling with lovely pencils (Museum Aquarelle by @carandache and Inktense by @derwentartofficial ), drinking gallons of Yorkshire tea, and now going to have a flick through @theenglishgardenmagazine and dream about sunnier days!

Fragments and highlights of last month in my box journal, which is now becoming a really interesting process for me.

Have a look through my posts for previous examples, they all vary but a couple things remain constant:
1. I draw the box (the frame or ‘stage’) first then fill it
2. I use methods which are easy for me and require no executive function or difficult decision making.

Highlights from February include:

1. Visiting cities! London, Cambridge and Bath (twice) and having a mooch in galleries*

2. Bella sitting in my lap for the first time in 16 years!

3. Vases of spring flowers

4. Cushiony, white blankets of Snowdrops

5. My Dad’s birthday

6. Annual garden tasks: Hedge cutting, tree work, strimming the ponds, mulching.

7. Helping my daughter move art studios!

*I love drawing tiny versions of paintings! The ones pictured here are by Gwen John (left) and her brother, Augustus John, of the same model.

There’s a workshop (via the link tree) in my bio if you’d like to have a go at beginning your own, but not sure where to start xx
