Black History Month is a time to honor the contributions, struggles, and triumphs of Black individuals throughout history. In aviation, it’s especially significant because it highlights the pioneers who broke barriers, like the Tuskegee Airmen, Bessie Coleman, and Willa Brown. It’s also a reminder that representation matters and that there’s still work to be done in educating African Americans about this industry. Aviation is a field that represents freedom, innovation, and endless possibilities. Many Black aviators got into it because of a deep passion for flight, a childhood dream, or the influence of mentors. Some were drawn to it despite the challenges, proving that Black excellence belongs in the skies. For me specifically, I was six years old when my grandmother took me to a nearby airport in my hometown of Wilson, NC. It was there when I took my first flight in a small airplane. After that day I was fully invested in aviation. So I owe it all to her because no one in my family was in the industry. Celebrating Black History Month in aviation could mean highlighting Black aviation pioneers, mentoring the next generation, attending events that uplift Black professionals, or simply taking time to reflect on the progress made and the path forward. Some people use this time to educate others, host discussions, or participate in outreach programs to inspire future aviators. There are so many inspiring figures in aviation, but a lot of inspiration comes from mentors, family members, and community leaders who push boundaries and create opportunities for others who wish to come behind them. It’s because of these individuals that I have what I do today. I feel it is my duty to continue this legacy and be a voice for those who look up to me because we cannot do this alone. Even today, African American pilots make up less than 4% of all commercial pilots. That’s why representation and Black History Month are important. They help build community, visibility, and opportunities for the next generation. by @x.cgp.x
A few weeks ago I accomplished one of my many lifelong dreams, which was to become an airline pilot! I’ll forever owe a debt of gratitude for everyone who helped and guided me during this long process. I do however have to give special recognition to my Grandmother Betty Thomas. She believed in me when many people didn’t and she knew when I was only seven years old that I would one day be where I am today. I used to wish that she could be here now to see what I’ve accomplished, but on my first flight as an airline pilot I realized that she’s everywhere I go and that I am closer to her when doing what I love most(flying) than any other time!💜 One of her life long dreams was to see my name on Delta Air Lines Property. We did her one even better and put her name on Delta Air Lines Property. For my birthday this past April, my immediate family surprised me with this commemorative brick in honor of her at Delta Air Lines World Headquarters. 🔺 This is only the beginning, First Officer Christopher Parrott Endeavor Air #iflyedv #delta #obap by @x.cgp.x

Ten years ago, I walked into an OBAP ACE Academy in Atlanta as a kid with a dream. I never could have imagined that one day I’d be leading an ACE Academy of my own. This summer, I had the incredible honor of serving as the Director of the inaugural RDU OBAP ACE Academy. It was a true full-circle moment and a reminder of how powerful mentorship, opportunity, and community can be. I’m grateful for every mentor who invested in me, every door that was opened, and every person who believed in me along the way. None of this happens alone. This is what paying it forward looks like. Here’s to the next generation of aviators. ✈️❤️ #OBAP #ACEAcademy #PayItForward #Aviation #futureaviators by @x.cgp.x
