We’re gearing up for NYJO’s Big Give Christmas Challenge from 2nd - 9th Dec (midday) and every donation will be doubled ⭐️

Seeing young people in Years 7-9 light up when our Emerging Professionals bring live jazz into their schools is unforgettable. For many, it’s their first ever live music experience… and sometimes the spark that leads them to pick up an instrument for the very first time.

These tours are a vital part of our national work and at the heart of what NYJO stands for in our 60th year: excellence, opportunity and diversity.

If you’re able to support, it would mean the world to us and to the young musicians who deliver this brilliant work.

Donate via our LinkTree or the NYJO website.

Come work with us!

NYJO is recruiting and I wanted to share this with my network here.

As we celebrate our 60th year and look ahead to an ambitious new chapter, we’re searching for a Development Director to join our small, collaborative team. It’s a significant role for us, one that will shape how we support young musicians for years to come.

We’re looking for someone experienced in fundraising, strategic in their thinking, and motivated by the chance to make a genuine impact. The role spans individual giving, major gifts, legacies, and corporate partnerships, and sits on our Senior Management Team with real autonomy to lead and innovate.

If you believe in the power of music to change lives, or you know someone who does, I’d love for you to take a look at the role or pass it on. NYJO’s work is full of extraordinary young talent, real purpose, and a team that cares deeply about what we do.

And if it sounds like the right next step for you personally, please do apply - the closing date id looming...

It is with deep respect that I acknowledge the recent passing of Bill Ashton, founder of @nyjouk (National Youth Jazz Orchestra). Bill played an instrumental role in shaping the careers of countless musicians who have gone on to make significant contributions to the jazz scene. While Bill’s NYJO history is not without its complexities, his commitment to jazz and to nurturing young talent is undeniable and has left an indelible mark on the industry. His legacy will be remembered for the countless artists whose lives and careers were profoundly shaped by his vision and dedication. Rest in peace Mr Ashton. by @yvettegriffith

On Sunday 2nd Feb, I will be attending my first @nyjouk event & Trustees Reception at @southbankcentre in my new role as Chief Executive of NYJO. It’s sold out!! 🎉

As part of Southbank’s Centre & @montreuxjazzfestival’s residency which explores the question ‘what is jazz today?’, we will be presenting a beautiful piece with a large ensemble commemorating the life and legacy of James Baldwin.

Devised by NYJO Emerging Professional @lucyannedanielsss, this is a collaborative piece between Lucy-Anne and the prolific @peteredwardsmusic as Musical Director.

We have a small and dynamic team at NYJO who put so much of themselves into laying the building blocks that create learning and performance opportunities for such a broad scope of young people curious about this thing called Jazz.

This project reflects how NYJO is growing, pushing creative expression and giving our Emerging Professionals a broader range of opportunities to shine.
I’m looking forward to the future! 👌🏾 taken in Southbank Centre by @yvettegriffith

Finally these three incredible women, who do so much to support young musicians in this country…together.

@janine_irons OBE (Co-founder of the inspirational @tom_warriors) and @yvettegriffith OBE (Director and ex CEO of the wonderful @jazzrefreshed) met with our very own Claudia Wilson, founder of Pure Vinyl Records.

They shared their experiences in the music business as leaders, as women and as mothers at the invitation of @tesshirst who was also showcasing her new album which explores these themes.

Such a wonderful moment to have been captured.

After nearly 12 transformative years, last week I stepped down as CEO of @jazzrefreshed - a place that’s been much more than a job. Jazz re:freshed is a family, a movement, and a home, and I owe so much to Adam and Justin @jazzyfreshtees , whose people-first vision set a powerful tone. Together, we’ve lifted the UK Jazz scene, creating spaces and platforms for emerging artists that have redefined the landscape and brought our incarnation of UK jazz onto the world stage.

So much life has happened during my time with JRF - I entered motherhood and grew in ways I never could have imagined. ‘Uncle Adam’ & ‘Uncle Justin’ are firm favourites of the fourth CEO, Eli! I’ve been privileged to experience what it means to be part of something truly special, I’ve had unforgettable moments and forged lifelong friendships. With Adam, Justin & the rest of the JRF crew, we’ve supported and elevated female composers & band leaders, emerging voices, and countless others in jazz. I’ve had the privilege of working with an incredibly supportive board - thank you, @victorredwoods, Dean Ricketts , Stephen Escritt and @joyandears (shout out to @retainthefreshness too!!) - and alongside inspiring partners like the inimitable Crispin Parry of @british_underground . We’ve also been fortunate to have funders who continue to play a vital role in supporting our vision. While there’s still progress to be made toward equitable funding, I’m deeply grateful for all the support we’ve received!

I’m leaving Jazz re:freshed in good hands (new ED to be announced soon!), proud of all we’ve accomplished, and humbled by the impact we’ve made. Jazz re:freshed has left an indelible mark on my heart, and I’m carrying this energy forward into my next chapter as CEO of @nyjouk. To everyone I’ve worked alongside, thank you. I’ll hold these years close for a lifetime. Here’s to everything still to come - onwards and upwards. by @yvettegriffith
