Save the date: 12th June // For the first time in British history, protesters against g-cide could be sentenced as terrorists. After entering an Israeli arms factory in Bristol, UK, in 2024 – Elbit Systems – and destroying a shipment of weapons (quadcopter drones) being used in G-za, Fatema Zainab, Lottie, Ellie and Sam were convicted of criminal damage. They had already spent about 18 months in prison, much longer than the legal limit before a trial.

During the trial and retrial, Judge Jeremy Johnson kept secret from the jury that he had granted himself the right to sentence them as terrorists. Through political manipulation and interference, this is the first case of terrorism laws being used to convict direct protest action. And they’re using our taxpayer money to pursue this.

Let's end this before it begins. Mobilise outside Woolwich Crown Court from 10am to 5pm on Friday 12th June – the day of the sentencing – for a day of protest. If you can only join for part of the day, please do.

Organise coaches or cars from your towns or cities, and bring your banners. The message will be loud and clear to Judge Johnson: drop the terrorism link.

Now is the time to show up.

I’ve never known a December without Haider. 40 years ago, he brought ample joy to my fleeing parents in the middle of the Iraq-Iran War. A few years on, I would have been a newborn bathing under the shade (and mischief) of my brothers before my sister came along.

So acute was Haider's intelligence that he was running around as a toddler calling me "Zaqneb". You'd have to pick up quite a bit of scripture to identify such a picture-perfect slur.

Our wild adventurous brother became a loving caring dare devil, overly generous, sweet and awkward about compliments. An animal lover who recorded spider documentaries on VHS. Who cried tears of sheer pain when he found a fox had enjoyed a midnight feast on his rabbit Rosie. Who kept turtles, chicks, guinea pigs and water snakes. Later, a dentist, renowned for his calming nature.

I was Haider's biggest fan and harshest critic. That’s before I knew I'd have to continue without him. Nothing matters anymore. I'd make an advent calendar if I knew how many days I had left to see him again. I'd fill it with Bounties in his honour. Then I'd remember he told me to stop eating sugar after every meal and to floss better. No protective wing nor smile can replace yours.

Last November, 2023, I found Haider in throngs of people at Trafalgar Sq. behind a canvas that said, “they fooled you into believing genocide was self-defence”. We pushed to the stage to find our eldest. We were so chuffed with ourselves. I'm glad he isn't here to see this now.

40. Ordained age of adulthood. You dreaded it. God had better plans for you.

Haider had a beautiful height and presence that would enter our house to something like a round of cheer every time. Every inch of that height lay still and rosy even in death. His soul was in the room when I hugged his body for the last time. His trim was too fresh, too perfect. They turned his face towards the Qibla and lowered his body into the ground.

Beyond the thin veil, I see him celebrating in the Garden. There are lots of children. Crazy birds of paradise. Wait until you see what's on this side, Zainab! I'm happy for you, habibi. Will I reach you? I miss you. Everything is pale but we wait. Al-Fatiha by @zainoted
