What are you really selling?

Tonight in Effective Selling at @bentleyu , we explored how great salespeople create value beyond the product.

From Don Draper selling memories, not a carousel in Mad Men… to the 1960s documentary Salesman, where door-to-door salesmen used different strategies to sell the same Bible.

Same product. Different customer. Different strategy.

This is what youth sports is supposed to look like. 🏒☘️

A huge thank you to @2014breakerselite — the kids, coaches, and parents — for showing what friendship, sportsmanship, and class are all about.

Zayden had the opportunity to play against his former team this weekend. Different jersey. Different bench. Same friendships.

What stood out most wasn’t anything that happened on the scoreboard. It was watching his former teammates come over to see him, talk to him, and remind all of us that the relationships these kids build through sports are bigger than any one game or any one team.

You want to celebrate kids who do it the right way? Celebrate this.

Compete hard. Respect each other. Be a great teammate. And when the game is over, remember the friendships that got you here.

Rejection is the price you pay for success.

You’re going to hear NO.

A customer will choose someone else.
You’ll get passed over for an opportunity.
A coach may cut you, bench you, or decide you’re not the player they want.

It hurts. But that moment doesn’t define you.

Your response does.

Do you quit? Blame the coach? Blame the customer? Blame the circumstances?

Or do you ask:

What can I learn? What can I control? How do I get better?

That’s The Adversity Advantage.

Sometimes rejection becomes the fuel you needed to work harder, improve your game, change your strategy, and prove—to yourself—what you’re capable of.

People watch how you win.

But they really watch how you respond when you lose.

Some will. Some won’t. So what? Next.

In sales, we’re taught that the best questions make the best sales.
23 years ago tonight, I asked the best question of my life.

Who could have imagined where that one question would take us? Three kids. Eighteen years in the same house. Raising a family while honoring both of our faiths. Careers, hockey rinks, classrooms, celebrations, challenges, laughter, and plenty of adversity along the way.

And through all of it, we’ve kept choosing and walking with each other.

Thank you for saying YES that night, and for continuing to say yes every day since, First Lady.

What a fun ride this has been with you.

Turns out, the greatest close of my sales career had nothing to do with sales. ❤️

Your headlights don’t need to illuminate the entire road.
They just need to show you the next 200 feet.
Isn’t that a lot like building relationships?

Too often in sales—and in life—we get so focused on where we want the relationship to go that we miss what’s directly in front of us.

The question they just asked.

The personal detail they shared.

The hesitation in their voice.

The opportunity to listen instead of pitch.

The chance to build trust.

That’s The Adversity Advantage.
Stop trying to see miles down the road.
Slow down and master your next 200 feet.
Put your blinders on. Focus completely on the person in front of you. Give them your attention. Ask better questions. Listen. Remember. Show them that you’re there for the right reasons.

Because when you’re already thinking about the destination, you can miss the relationship being built right in front of you.
Focus shows care.
Care creates connection.
Connection builds trust.
You don’t need to know exactly where every relationship is going.
Sometimes you just need to turn on the headlights and follow the road as it appears.
So ask yourself:
What does YOUR next 200 feet look like?
