Presenting a double bill of vanguard techno producer Ibrahim Alfa Jnr (@ibrahimalfajunior ) and vocalist and producer feeo (@_feeo_ ) at Ormside, today, Thursday 27th August, with an introduction and accompanying film programme from Phoebe Beckett Chingono (@zvicha_ )

Exploring the convergence of black experience and digital media, the programme positions Black techno music within a broader context of Black British techno-cultural production. It draws upon the notion that cinema might amplify what techno music does to the body – altering time, expectation and scale without explicit explanation.

The film programme features iniva-related works, including an excerpt from Donald Rodney’s Autoicon and Keith Piper’s Club Mix, alongside a wider selection of moving-image works.

Next Thursday, British-Zimbabwean anthropologist, curator and cultural producer Phoebe Beckett Chingono (@zvicha_) presents an introduction to the evening at Ormside – curating and assembling a rotating film programme framing performances from @_feeo_ and @ibrahimalfajunior.

It draws upon the notion that cinema might amplify what techno music does to the body – altering time, expectation and scale without explicit explanation.

Phoebe Beckett Chingono works across the June Givanni PanAfrican Cinema Archive (JGPACA), iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts), and the London Community Video Archive (LCVA). Next Wednesday Angel Community Centre (ACC) is hosting a film night to test the ACC being used as a community cinema. The event is being run by DK-CM and Enfield Council with their Journeys and Places programme. We’d love you to join us! See stories to get a ticket.

The first film, The Polar Express, will begin just after the school run at 4:30pm. The hall will be open and popcorn will be available from 4pm - we look forward to welcoming local families!

The second portion of the evening will be a set of short films, curated by Phoebe Beckett Chingono of London Community Video Archive, starting at 7pm. The programme brings together films from the London Community Video Archive (LCVA) with contemporary works by Rhea Storr that invite reflection on what we mean by community centre. These films bring to light the often overlooked histories of community organizing; they demonstrate the potential of film to amplify voices and influence societal change. In Storr’s own words, film can be “a surface, a space, a gathering.”

The films:

(Excerpt from) Subjects of State, Labours of Love (2025)

Next Tuesday, @the_lcva and @piehouse.coop are teaming up to bring you ‘48 YEARS LATER’ a screening about Lewisham’s anti/racist history, to commemorate the end of Black History Month 📽️

In this moment of divisiveness, as those in power relentlessly attempt to sow fear and distrust between different groups, it is so important to understand our history of collective organising. All of these films show successful community initiatives taken to oppose oppressive circumstances: there is so much to be learned, and so much to be strengthened by 🫂

Doors are at 6.30, the films will begin at 7 and be followed by short talks. The venue is wheelchair accessible and complimentary tickets are available for PAs, just send us a DM. Tickets are selling fast, there are a very limited number available on the door so please buy early to avoid disappointment! by @zvicha_

What We Do Next

Saturday 25th October 2025

12:00pm – 2:00pm Workshop at Dalston CLR James Library
3:00pm – 5:00pm Screening of Coconut Head Generation (2023) dir. Alain Kassanda at Rio Cinema

Presented by June Givanni PanAfrican Cinema Archive (@junegivannifilmarchive), London Community Video Archive (@the_lcva) and Dalston CLR James Library, the Anti-Racist Study Day revisits and reimagines the 1984–85 Greater London Council’s (GLC) Anti-Racist Film Programme.

With the rise of openly right wing violence and protests on our streets, racism in media and politics, we want to understand: what does anti-racist organising and education look like today?

The event foregrounds films as a tool for conversation and dialogue as critical sites of education.

The Anti-Racist Study Day will provide participants the opportunity to engage with:

• The work of the archives
• Excerpts from a wide-range of archive films
• An archival display
• Related reading materials
• A public forum for discussion and debate

Together we will walk to Rio Cinema to continue the conversation with a special screening of Alain Kassanda’s documentary Coconut Head Generation (2023), which shows how a film discussion group formed an integral part of a series of mass protests against police brutality in Nigeria.

The London Community Video Archive team (@the_lcva) will be joining our programme at Otherfield to present a workshop on “Making a Community Video Archive and its Gaps and Emergent Spaces”.

This film programme presents newly acquired material to discern gaps and emergent spaces in the archive.

The post-screening panel will include LCVA founding directors Tony Dowmunt and Andy Porter, who will share their personal perspectives on their respective paths into community video practice of the 1970s and discuss how and why they came to establish the LCVA.

The session is designed as an intergenerational dialogue with the intention of asking what we might learn from past community media practices when viewed through a contemporary critical lens.

Excerpts will be shown from:

Things that Mother Never Told Us (1977) informed by the methods of consciousness-raising groups from the Women’s Liberation Movement, Carry Gorney uses video to collaborate with women on Milton Keynes council estates talking about relationships, motherhood, marriage, and identity.

Open Door: Transex Liberation Group (clip) part of the Channel 4 programme series Open Door, it features a rare broadcast of early trans organising.

Dead Proud (1988), written and performed by Second Wave, presents sharp, funny sketches by black and white working-class women, drawing on their experiences to explore teenage pregnancy, school, and family.

Election 74 Part 2 (1974) captures a political debate on party organising, ending with voter interviews at a polling station in Tower Hamlets.

You Got to be Choking (1994) documents the grassroots campaign against the M11 Link Road by communities in East London during 1993–94.

and more…

Please join us this Thursday 17 July at @britishfilminstitute for a special screening as part of Experimenta. Nearly 100 original born-video works from Cinenova have recently been digitised and preserved by the BFI National Archive. This programme features three rarely screened works, each highlighting feminist perspectives on protest, sexuality and health, and artistic expression – through critiques of state and media power, women’s voices in HIV education, and reflections by Black women photographers.

We are delighted that @zvicha_ will introduce the screening and respond to the selection of videos. Phoebe Beckett Chingono is an anthropologist and cultural producer. Her practice spans archival research, ethnographic methods, choreography, and community-based media. She holds an MA in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago, where she was a scholarship recipient and research grantee. Her research explores value, semiotics, and mediating practices, particularly from imperial ‘margins’ in the Caribbean and Sub-Saharan Africa. She currently works with the June Givanni PanAfrican Cinema Archive (@junegivannifilmarchive) and is project coordinator at the London Community Video Archive (@the_lcva), and has worked with Media Burn Archive, Chicago.

Many thanks to @wjefowler. Tickets available via link in bio.
