OPEN CALL 2027 – The wait is over!
FOTODOKS returns to Munich in October 2027 for its 13th edition, and our Open Call is officially live!
We are seeking existing, lens-based documentary projects that reflect on care, its emotional, physical, social, and political dimensions. We’re looking for photorealistic, honest stories that unpack, debate, and re-enact care in a world where self-care is commercialized and welfare systems are dismantled.
How does documentary photography intertwine with modern imaginaries of care? Is care a practice of freedom, or is it bound by ethics and morality? HOW TO APPLY: Head to the link in our bio to find full details and apply via @picter_com. Free to submit until November 20th, 2026 (23:59 CET)
We can’t wait to see your work and perspectives!

At the bottom of Monte Conero, which rises 600 metres above the Adriatic coast, lies the small fishing village of Portonovo. It in the heart of the Marche region, just south of Ancona. Right there on the beach, there is @ristorante_emilia_portonovo . This family-run restaurant has been in existence since 1928. Founded by Giulia Palmina Gasparoni – whom everyone simply called Emilia – it remains to this day a symbol of what defines Adriatic cuisine: fresh fish and seafood, straight from the sea on the doorstep. Earlier this year I took part in a portrait photography workshop at wonderful @palmtreeworkshops , a platform set up and run by @marilenastafylidou . Our teacher during the 5 day workshop was renowned photographer @danalixenberg , best known for her Imperial Courts projects. It was an intense 5 day workshop with lots of exchanging ideas, taking images of each others, of strangers on the streets, talking about books concepts and strategies, approaches to portraiture and, of course, swimming in the Southern Aegean Sea. Thank you the invaluable insights into your working mode Dana, thank you for making us feel at home Marilena and Stella. Also thanks to great guest lecturer @sarahjuliawong . A big shoutout to the group, fellow photographers @murielverbist @zigzagtonio @angelabaas_ @antreasmeladakis @lana_ohrimenko @rubypluhar #stefandzodan @dominikgigler @emisandor by @_frankbauer_

German-American surfer @leonglatzer turned pro at 15. He was born in Hawaii and raised in Pavones, Costa Rica where he learned to surf at the local beaches. In 2021 he became the first German surfer to compete at the Olympic Games. Now he is spending more and more time in Munich, in order to train at @o2surftownmuc , Europe’s largest surf park, which is situated in Hallbergmoos near. Munich. We met Leon right after a morning training session on a surprisingly chilly morning in May this year. As much as he loves beeing in the water, he was looking forward to that warm shower by the pool. Thanks for the great morning Leon, and taking that GoPro with you! Photographed and published in DeinSPIEGEL #surfing #leonglatzer #surftown #deinspiegel thank you Jojo Hendess at Surftown and Henning Jochmann @redbull by @_frankbauer_

Earlier this year I went to Salzburg to meet and photograph @roxaneduran .
The Austrian-French actress, born in Paris in 1993, took on the role of the Buhlschaft in „Jedermann“ at this year’s @salzburgerfestspiele . We photographed Roxane behind the scenes at the festival for the latest issue of Salon International Art and Culture Magazine. Many thanks to Roxane and the wonderful team: photography assistant @andreasgrafphotography hair and make-up artist @elena_schachl fashion and jewellery stylist @irisw2506 fashion stylist @arzurella and Peter Elfert of Salon Kunstmagazin. And, of course, to everyone behind the scenes at the Salzburger Festspiele who made this beautiful production possible. Above all, Roxane Duran, who we were all thrilled to work with. #roxaneduran #jedermann #buhlschaft #salzburgerfestspiele #salonartandculturemagazine by @_frankbauer_
