What an incredibly lucky man I am. Raising a glass with so many loved ones last week in honour of my first 50 years on Earth and the last 25 in London was just the best thing. To borrow from a great philosopher who also inspired my getup, it’s never boring. It’s probably sign of a good night that the only good pics are ones were taken by others, thanks for those, @tinak_photography and @johnmcmurtrie666 My heart is full. Chin chin. by @alexandermilas

Orbit 50 completed, systems nominal and I am filled with gratitude. Age is a privilege. To paraphrase an old space wizard, you cannot win but there are alternatives to fighting. Chin chin everybody. #maytheforcebewithyou by @alexandermilas

Metal Hammer is 40 years old — just wow. To say I’m proud that I was there for 10 of those would be understating the case. It was the honour of a lifetime to work with so many excellent people who still feel more like family to me. We worked our asses off but it was never just a job. It felt more like a calling which I lived and breathed and truly, genuinely loved. It was also a ride, and sometimes I was just barely holding on by my fingernails but what insane fun it was, and in all humility I like to think we made a difference to this music which is such an important and unifying thing for so many people. It is for me. The greatest triumph though was to see that torch carried to brilliantly after I moved on — Merl, Eleanor, the whole team and contributors who’ve kept this wonderful ship sailing toward an incredible half-century in defiance of so many headwinds. Fucking. Well. Done. I’ve been pretty busy with this and that since the Hammer days or indeed daze, but it was a real joy to get a call not too long ago asking for ideas about how we might celebrate such an important milestone. To paraphrase the frontman of a popular beat combo, I suggested something old, something new. We’re teaming up with the legendary Paul Ryan to bring back Defenders of the Faith, a tour that I think was one of the best expressions of what Metal Hammer was always about — backing what you believe in and kicking down doors for the music you love. I mean, Ghost were just a support band. Whatever happened to them? Give @dotf.live a follow and keep an eye out for updates. And now a beer. Chin chin amigos. #metalhammer40 #dotf by @alexandermilas

Touchdown after the remarkable weekend at ESTEC — a weekend among the stars and over 12,000 visitors. I’m immensely proud that @spacerocksofficial is a part of the @europeanspaceagency Open Day — it’s a chance to see and learn more about the cutting edge space exploration and the implications it all has for life down here on Earth, and only happens because so much hard work and love goes into it all. There are too many great moments to count — astronauts, scientists, engineers responsible for the biggest missions going and even the maker Eve Online showing us how imagined futures can inform where we go next for better or indeed for worse. We’ve a lot more to post about what we learned over the weekend. And now, a beer. #watchthisspace #spacerocks #ESAOpenDay #ESA taken in ESTEC European Space Research and Technology Centre by @alexandermilas

On September 1st 2001 I arrived at UCL in London with a suitcase and a laptop and a plan to do my second Masters in archaeology and to settle into an academic life of teaching and corrupting the youth. From a career perspective you might say that plan evolved somewhat, but it was a catalyst for so many adventures and what I really couldn’t have predicted was the wealth of friendships and chosen family I’d meet along the way. London can be a tough city and striking out on your own is a heavy weight to carry, but 25 years on I’m immeasurably proud to call it my home and feeling extremely grateful today. The irony of posting this from Germany isn’t lost on me. Chin chin amigos, you know who you are — it’s been a trip. by @alexandermilas

Brian Blessed once told a group of us that in life you should always choose the adventure, that the only cure for the empty feeling at the end of an adventure is to start planning the next one, and to never underestimate the value of a good pair of socks. All of these things are absolutely true. The only thing topping three days of cycling to Bloodstock was the incredible welcome we received when we got there. It was a tough ride, hot as hell but the bond you make with people when you’ve undertaken a challenge like this is lasting, and to see @hmtruants smashing it in its 14th year is down to so many people old and new joining us or coming through for us, and helping us raise £1.6 million for four kids charities. We’ll be bumping that number up when we wrap up fundraising a little later this year. For now, a huge, huge thank you to everyone who came along, who tirelessly volunteered at our brand-spanking new HMT tent, who so generously donated, and the many many lovely people who said hello and joined our mega raffle over the weekend. The Bloodstock community is a force of nature and we are so honoured and thrilled to be a part of it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. And yes, we’re already planning the next one. This is the way. #heavymetaltruants #bloodstock #charity taken in Bloodstock Festival by @alexandermilas
