Floripondio
Estación Hospital, Medellín

This is the second intervention of “Floripondio”, one of the works in the series “Wallpaper”, which references the decorative wallpaper used to adorn interior spaces. Given the open-ended nature of this concept, the piece has multiple layers of interpretation; depending on the context in which it is situated, it acquires different meanings in dialogue with the characteristics and realities of the place.
The flower depicted in this work is the floripondio (Brugmansia), whose most abundant compound is scopolamine, a sedative and hallucinogen that, in high doses, can be fatal. Historically, it has been employed in rituals, as medicine, as a drug, to manipulate others, or to kill.
Below are some of the interpretations I see as relevant to Medellín’s floripondios:
- The floripondio as a metaphor for sedative forces and other devices of social alienation.
- The floripondio as medicine for rest.
- Floral motifs as canons of beauty.
- Representation of domesticated nature.
- The mutilation of plants reproductive apparatus.
- The association of flowers with humans as a sign of fragility and potency.
- An image associated with interior spaces, decontextualized into the outdoors, a sense of home in the street. The private becomes public.
- Wallpaper, originally a symbol of hierarchy and opulence, becomes a marker of the kitsch and vulgar once industrialized and made accessible. The hierarchy of taste.
- The industrial vs the organic reproduction of a pattern. Our relationship to repetition.
- The shift in scale.
- Wallpaper as a tool to conceal imperfections or ugliness—a device of“whitewashing.”
- Reproduction of the cliché as a device.

Esta es una de las dos piezas que hicimos en Medellín, en el barrio de Niquitao. A continuación anexo el texto tan bello que escribió el equipo de Extramural. Ha sido una experiencia significativa la del proceso de este proyecto. Agradezco la acogida de las personas de la tiendita, el colegio y el barrio; la dedicación y amistad del circulo del museo escolar; las amistades que hice en el taller; y la ayuda de amigos para materializar este mural.

Equipo de Extramural:
@axelvoid , es uno de los artistas internacionales que nos acompañó en la reciente edición del festival Extramural Resonancias In Situ, llevado a cabo en las instalaciones y alrededores de la Institución @hectorabadgomez_ie . Con una historia cercana a nuestras apuestas vitales basadas en la educación y la movilidad humana, tejimos puentes y pensamientos basados en su experiencia personal como un ser en permanente movimiento (Haití, Andalucía, España, Berlín, EE. UU, etc..), desde el muralismo como Referente Internacional, hasta su visión como artista contemporáneo y educador. Estas conversaciones fueron significativas y contundentes para asentar la pregunta por las nuevas y posibles representaciones en el espacio público/urbano y la obra como dispositivo de saberes, encuentros y conversaciones con el entorno.

‘’En cuclillas, el homo ludens y el homo drogado juegan lanzando una cajita de fósforos, alineando azar, fuerza y gravedad para que se sostenga en equilibrio sobre su borde más angosto. El hombre, cansado de perder, toma la cajita, saca un fósforo y enciende una pipa hechiza; inhala y respira por la herida. Al apoyar cabeza y espalda contra un muro, se proyecta su imagen mental: una pintura alucinógena. Una serie sistemática de flores logra un equilibrio modular; son floripondios (Brugmansia arborea), campanas de árbol con puntas estrelladas. Este es un papel tapiz que forra las paredes de la calle, no para ocultar, sino para revelar una posible imagen de Prado Centro bajo los estados alterados de un cuerpo’’

Here are some images of the first Stoma Feast at the Brooklyn Peace Center. Stoma is a communal art group that im proud to be a part of. The feast is part of the process of making the Stoma Cookbook, a book of relational recipes. We will make the second edition of Stoma Feast together with the release of the Cookbook Zine 2 on June 11th, bring some food and sit with us if you are around.

Let's break bread! The Cookbook is starting to give its fruits, excited to sit with familiar faces and new friends to share food, music and stories. This is the first of many programs we will be running at the wonderful @brooklynpeacecenter . Come through if you are in town.

Stoma presents and celebrates the first issue of Stoma Cookbook Zine! We will host a dinner, readings, and music at the Brooklyn Peace Center, Brooklyn, on March 21 at 6 pm.
In societies centered on production rather than connection, eating has become a means to an end. Food is treated as fuel, as an emotional sedative, or as a signal of cultural capital—a performance prop. This night and series of zines is an invitation to reclaim the aesthetics of food and everything that occurs around it. In times of conflict and apathy, we want to inhabit rituals that illuminate the humane and spiritual aspects of sharing a meal.

Present day progress involves an erasure the environment. Being in a place so heavily charged, I prompted myself as a game, to attempt to erase the marks of an area through strokes. The effort to obscure at times evidences the scars even more, these emerge in one way or another.
I made this piece in an abandoned building near the port of Beirut, following the August 2020 explosion. by @axelvoid

This theatre piece takes a symbolic reference — the space of isolation in which we find ourselves when we use digital social media — and transforms it into a physical space as a sociological experiment. Olivia inhabited _The Social Room_ for two weeks in a space open to the public. The only way to interact with Olivia was actively through social networks (the contact information was painted on the facade) and passively through a view-scope from which one could observe Olivia in her daily life. This piece is intended as a direct critique of the alienation and deep addiction generated by how we use social media; a synthetic substitute for our relational behavior amongst each other and with the world.

Olivia inhabited _The Social Room_ for two weeks in a space open to the public. The only way to interact with Olivia was actively through social networks (the contact information was painted on the facade) and passively through a view-scope from which one could observe Olivia in her daily life. This piece is intended as a direct critique of the alienation and deep addiction generated by how we use social media; a synthetic substitute for our relational behavior amongst each other and with the world.

Esta pieza de teatro toma una referencia simbólica —el espacio de aislamiento en el que nos encontramos cuando hacemos uso de medios sociales digitales— y lo transforma en un espacio físico como experimento sociológico. Olivia habitó _The Social Room_ durante dos semanas en un espacio abierto al público. El único modo de interactuar con Olivia era a través de redes sociales (estas estaban inscritas en la fachada de la habitación) de manera activa, y de manera pasiva o unidireccional a través de una mirilla desde la que se podía ver a Olivia en su cotidianidad. Esta pieza es una propuesta crítica a la alienación y adicción profunda que genera el uso que damos a las redes sociales; una sustitución sintética de cómo nos relacionamos entre nosotras y con el mundo.

I painted this during the demonstrations in Minneapolis after the murder of George Floyd. Today it´s about Renee Nicole Good, and those who live with fear for their safety. To me, this image mirrors a naïve desire to hold on to hope for the possibility of radical change against oppression. by @axelvoid
